Summary: The effects are the original screen effects from the show
Review: I believe they took the footage from the screens that were from the show itself,it's what the people saw that joyous day. That's why the effects are there.

Summary: This Will Be On All Available Dead Videos
Review: I guess there are 2 types of fans of the Grateful Dead: Deadheads (really diehard types that would enjoy the video even if the quality was at a half a star, and the Dead were having an off night). Then there are non-Deadheads (casual fans that want the best concerts available of that group). I have all available Dead videos (didn't get GD movie - waited a little too long), and love them all (guess which type of fan I am). To the non-Deadhead fans, I would say get The Closing of Winterland, Downhill from Here, and (maybe because of Bruce Hornsby) View from the Vault 2. Then continue your quest for the perfect concert video (my personal choice is a toss up between The Last Waltz, and Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense).
Now. For the Deadicated, Deadhead fans, I would recommend anything & everything available (including Grateful Dawg). Forget the reviews from some of the others about the cheesie psychadelic effects, forget the comments of "this concert wasn't as good as", and forget the "it was better live becase they edited" comments. When it comes to Garcia and The Grateful Dead (in the illustrious words of Robert Hunter)"Like a Steam Locomotive Rolling Down the Track. He's Gone, He's Gone and Nothings Gonna Bring Him Back" so enjoy what's out there. Kudos to Monterey Home Video for making these concerts available.

Summary: I thought everyone might like to know...
Review: I read a recent review of this DVD in which the reviewer gave the DVD a rating of four stars instead of five, the reason being that they couldn't appreciate the added special effects that took away from the performance itself. I recently read an interview with David Lemieux, the current archivist of the Vault, and I thought everyone might like to know, especially the reviewer of four stars, that the footage contained in all the View From The Vault films are represented exactly as they were during the concert. In other words the images that you see on your TV screen, are an exact replica of the images that were displayed on the monitors during the concert, added effects and all. With that being said, I think it is rather cool that the concert goers of these five particular shows showcased in the View From The Vault series, as well as the millions that missed out on the experience of these particular dates, are able to re-create the exact visual stimulation that took place during these performances, and furthermore will continue to live on in homes around the world until the end of time. Happy viewing!

Summary: rolling through the 80's
Review: i was kind of reluctant to purchase this View IV. and you might say the same after watching the crazy psycho from the first view, but i will tell you, view IV puts that one to shame. There are still "some" psycho scenes in here but THEY ARE tastefully done (exept for the first drums/space). they are able to paint in what jerry and the boys are playing while still able to see the band. good shots of the band, and some great shots of jerry as a man of many colors w/ his guitar- truely awesome!...BR>if you like a little color added to your screens-along w/ GREAT selections of songs, GET THIS- YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY- A MUST HAVE DVD!...

Summary: Don't sweat the cheesy effects...Very solid shows
Review: I was looking for my first Dead DVD and I kept reading the same thing in all the reviews, that they were weak because of the graphics and effects. Well, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised: the effects aren't half as bad as I expected, and more importantly, the shows are really good. Great video and audio quality, great setlists, and overall solid performances from the boys.
Highlights:
1. Bobby on My Brother Esau, Hell in a Bucket, and Throwing Stones
2. Jerry's playing on Deal and Scarlet
3. Iko Iko
4. Shakedown
This DVD is great, and if it's any indication of the quality of other GD/VFTV releases, I'll be buying more.

Summary: Beware of tacky special effects!
Review: I won't go into a lot of detail on this one..... suffice it to say that the performances are great, Jerry's playing is stellar and he manages not to fumble up too many lyrics. The only reason I didn't give this five stars is that whomever is responsible (Monterey Video?) continues to see fit to interject those awful, uninspiring, cheesy special effects. Why they insist on doing this is beyond me. This has become increasingly annoying after viewing the VFTV series. Most of us actually want to see the concert footage itself (of which the picture quality here is fabulous, when said effects aren't ruining it). NOTE TO THOSE RESPONSIBLE: us Deadheads don't need any help with visual enhancements - we can govern that all by ourselves if we so choose. Stay out of it! I can only hope that the upcoming 'Closing of Winterland' dvd has been more tastefully composed. Peace all - over and out.

Summary: another great vault release... plus 5.1 sound!
Review: If you haven't purchased any of this series yet and you want the best one released to date, buy this one. They are all great and hopefully they keep releasing more dvd's of the shows. I can only wish they'ed edit out the spacey graphics.
