Summary: "Retardation" is right...
Review: On the back of this DVD single (in effect) of the uncut video for "The Outsider" by A Perfect Circle, the band characterizes the video as a "bit of retardation" (or something like that). Well, that pretty much sums it up.

The opening menu is colorful but straightforward, allowing one to select between the main video ("The Outsider"), the "Bikini Bandits & The Golden Rod" trilogy, and a couple trailers. This was my first time watching the main video in any format (cut or uncut), and I supposed it lived up to my modest expecatations: no coherent plot, no connection to the song lyrics, but somewhat funny and moderate "T&A" -- vaguely reminded me of something, e.g., Monster Magnet might put out for MTV...

Although the main video includes some opening and closing scenes outside the song itself, it is still fairly short overall (7-8 min?). Also, for a supposed "uncut" version, it seemed fairly tame -- bikinis, some bad language and obscene hand gestures, and lawn ornament molestation; rather underwhelming in that regard.

The "extras" on the disc were pretty much the same -- goofy T&A-oriented retardation.

Overall, from the perspective of: (i) A Perfect Circle's work generally; (ii) the high quality of the song itself; and/or (iii) gratuitous lechery, this was fairly disappointing. However, from a "this is so bad I can't believe they actually put out something like this -- I'm really embarassed for the band", it had some entertainment value. Based on the latter, and because there were bikini-clad women and some funny moments, I'd give it 2.5 stars overall.

Review: One Music Video + One drawn out Advertisement for Bikini Bandits = Not worth $10.

Save your $10 and use it to purchase the APC DVD due out in November.

Summary: fun in apc land - deal with it
Review: there has been quite a bit of whining and complaining related to this dvd single/video. too bad. i bought this dvd and laughed [a lot]. i liked it so much that i also bought the "bikini bandits experience", i laughed some more, you get the picture. this is actually a pseudo-cheesefest that has its roots in the work of seventies exploitation flicks, specifically the work of russ meyer. the video for "the outsider" is actually very well done - crisply filmed with gorgeous color with the obvious bonus of scantily clad women beating up defenseless lawn decorations. because the video is in no way a morose examination of the subject matter, it manages to inject a little levity into a very serious and sad song which only strengthens the impact of the song itself. for those of you out there in [e]m[pty]-tv land, this means the video adds to the song, instead of merely providing dull window dressing or existing only as a "sales tool". well done "bikini bandits" and apc, you have done yourself proud and confused your own fans in one swell foop. russ and the pussycats say thanks.

Summary: I'm pleased with this DVD!
Review: This DVD is described as a DVD single (one song), but it does contain a 3 part short movie with the Bikini Bandits to go with the full and extended Outsider video. It also has a trailer of an animated Bikini Bandits Christmas movie coming out in December (Maynard lends his voice to this project). For what is considered a video single, it is definitely worth buying.

Summary: Not for me, though I am a Tool/APC fan
Review: This Dvd is... Um... Well, it's terrible. And in a lot of ways, it's great. No... Wait... It's just terrible... Basically, it's a dvd for a Perfect Circle video, "uncut and uncensored" and then a couple of the Bikini Bandits and the Golden Rod episodes that are about 5 minutes a peice.

Basically, the video is an add-on to The Bikini Bandits stuff, and the Bikini Bandits are a bit like a fire... They're somewhat intriguing and cool from a distance, then you get up close and they burn you and show how much they really suck... And metaphorically speaking, this dvd is ON FIRE in that sense.

Now, if you're a Perfect Circle fan and you want to watch some twisted S#!t that does have a couple of 10 second Maynard cameos and also has APC music in the background... Then try as hard as you can to find this in the discount bin. If you're a Bikini Bandits fan (they exist, kind of like how there are people who love A Kentucky Fried Movie), then you'll probably love this disc and the strange stupidity that it seems to spawn. Me, I'd rather have had live concert footage, or more than ONE APC video for the regular cost of a DVD...

Summary: Just What I Thought It Would Be!
Review: This dvd was everything i expected it to be. So it earns a 5 star rating in my opinon.

Tool and APC are 2 of the most artistic bands to date. Can't they have fun and not make an artsy video for once.

Look at Judith, 3 Libras, and Weak and Powerless. Those are all beautiful artsy videos.

Same with all of Tool's.

Billy howerdell stated in an interview that mjk was trying to make this a tottaly artsy video and billy just said why dont you call the bikini bandits director.

Thats how the video was made.

Those who were surprised by no live footage or music videos need to read the fine print.

Summary: pretty sad waste of time
Review: This release makes me embarrassed to be a fan and, as someone mentioned, it'll make you lose any respect for them, because it trivializes their creativity. Note: it's one thing to have the subtle joking around, which I think all fans are OK with, but this is different.

Another thing is that I'm getting fed up with Maynard's ego-trip, how he acts like an immature child, and how, as a grown man, he's intentionally getting off on this persistent objectification of women just for the hell of it. It's one thing to enjoy women's physical features in a sexual connotation, but his whole personality is starting to irritate me as the years pass. The problem is that there are so many people out there who [ridiculously] place him on a high pedestal that they can't even think about this issue with a clear head and figure it out for themselves. Creativity (or, in this case, lack thereof) does not equal deism.

Summary: Is there anything more annoying than Tool fans?
Review: Tool was one of my favorite bands during the past couple of years or so. I bought all the proper studio albums, Salival DVD, and the two APC releases. They've since become a tad boring to me. Since I didn't like the feel of the records any longer I sold everything Tool I had and have started listening to lighter music in the "fun" realm. But even during my Tool-obsession hey day, I have always been beyond sick of appauling Tool fans. They stick up for evey single thing the band does, and check their free will at door. It really is okay to not like soemthing the band does. Really. For instance, "opiate" sucks. It's straight forward shock-metal. Even Maynard admits through the lyrics that he's writing words for shock value. I think that's lame and I think the album follows suit.

But getting to my point, I wasn't surprised to hearthat those fans that didn't like this DVD were attacked by the "hardcore fans" (or "real" fans, isn't that what you call yourselves?). If someone watches the DVD and doesn't like it, are they disallowed to state their opinion? But of course, being a Tool/APC fan remains being a select club where evrything Maynard does is gospel, and it's uncool to criticize him for anything. I'm so sick of hearing how Tool fans are all Artists themselves, all intelligent, all blah blah blah. Too much of one thing keeps your mind from progressing. "A mind that stops thinking is considered clincially dead." (Isn't THAT Tool gospel?) Stop thinking you're better than other people because you "get it," as you say. Maybe it's time to move on, try something new. Tool fans, maybe it's YOU that need to grow up.

Summary: Come see Maynard SELL OUT!
Review: Total crap. Suitable only for those that dont want to keep any respect for APC or Maynard. Appears to be written for pre-teen boys that do not know that they can see real porn on the web for free. The whole DVD is just like the Outsider video, bad. I was hoping to see some concert footage or at least 5.1 sound of APC videos. Nope. Just Bikini Bandit tripe.
