Description:

The 50-inch KE-50XS910 plasma HDTV is armed with integrated NTSC and ATSC (high-definition) tuners, Sony's prestigious WEGA Engine, and a host of sophisticated video technologies. The screen is configured in a widescreen, 16:9 aspect ratio to match the dimension of most movies and HDTV broadcasts. A Memory Stick media slot with JPEG/MPEG-1/MP3 compatibility simplifies playback of video clips, MP3 music files, and still pictures from compatible cameras and music players.

With a plasma screen you get vivid colors like you've never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, typically, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile--the KE-50XS910 is a mere 4.9 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting. Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems. You do have to be on guard against image burn-in, however.

Sony's proprietary WEGA Engine system keeps images in the digital domain from first to last, giving you end-to-end digital accuracy for superb picture quality from any source. Direct Digital II Circuitry (DDC) boosts signal-to-noise ratio before a signal passes through to the Digital Reality Creation (DRC) circuit, which converts standard-definition signals to high-definition.

MID X (Multi-Image Driver) circuitry scales all incoming standard and HD signals to the configuration of the panel without degrading the signal, and it also powers the set's single-tuner TwinView picture-and-picture feature. Finally, DCP (Digital Component Processor) fine tunes a signal to improve overall contrast and sharpness before the image is displayed.

The KE-50XS910 performs CineMotion 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Connections include 2 high-definition-compatible component-video inputs, a direct digital DVI-HDTV (digital visual interface) input for use with a DTV set-top box, 3 each composite- and S-video inputs (1 each on the side panel for ready connection to a camcorder or gaming console), and 2 RF coaxial inputs for hookup with an older VCR, cable box, or antenna.
