Summary: Can anyone confirm the contents of this set?
Review: Am I to understand that this set contains 21 discs rather the the reported 15? And 5 boxed sets rather than the 3 shown in the picture (Adventures, Return, Feature Films)?

I am considering purchasing this set, but I need to know whether it is just the 3 sets comprised of 15 discs, because if so, it is more expensive than the 3 sets purchased separately ($135). However, if it is indeed the larger set, it is less expensive than all 5 sets separately ($195).

Does anyone know for sure?

Summary: A wonderful series
Review: By and large, the Sherlock Holmes series starring Brett is by far the best out there. But this particular set is lacking the final two volumes. Sooner or later, someone would be wise to release the entire series in one set. But in the mean time, this is certainly worth the purchase price... just don't forget about the two new volumes that were recently released and are not part of this set (namely Casebook and Memoirs).

Summary: 23 versus 21 = the same but different
Review: For Region 1 (NTS) MPI Home Video released 6/02-10/04 the 36 one-hour episodes and 5 two-hour Sherlock Holmes movies starring Jeremy Brett in 5 box sets consisting of 21 disks, with various extras, which are especially prominent on the last two releases of 9/04 and 10/04 (Casebook, Memoirs).
For Region 2 (PAL) Cinema Club released in 5/03 the same 41 programs (36 + 5) in *one* box set consisting of 23 disks, the 36 one-hour episodes on 18 disks (2 episodes/disk), which with the 5 two-hour movies each on a disk equals 23 disks total. There reportedly are absolutely no extra features, according to reviews on Amazon.uk.
According to MPI Home Video (email to me 22 Sep. 2004), the Brett DVD Holmes set (and also the Rathbone DVD Holmes set of 5 items) "are not official release items from MPI. They are put together independently by the retailer [Amazon] & not the manufacturer." In other words, the "set" is just the 5 Brett boxes cobbled together. Thus if one has previously purchased Brett boxes, just get the remaining boxes. Of course, sometime in the future there may be a another Brett release, perhaps in one box with the DVDs in slim cases (as the recent re-release of World at War), and maybe with yet other extra material, dare one hope even the "lost short episode" "Beekeeping in Sussex" filmed in 1986 and never aired on TV.

Summary: Guess
Review: From the picture, I would guess that it's The Adventures, The Return and the Feature Film Collection. I own all five sets, including the new ones, the Casebook and the Memoirs, and I don't see the last two in there. My recommendation- get them separately, and skip the Feature Film collection. I grew up watching the Grenada series on Mystery with Vincent Price Sunday nights on PBS, and Brett is by far my favorite Holmes, but even I can't condone what Grenada did with The Sussex Vampire (in the series, The Last Vampire). Their Sign of Four is pretty good, but you can order it separately.

Summary: New boxed set questions
Review: I did a little online snooping myself. The region 2 edition contains 23 dvds and all 41 episodes. I'd have to make sure this and the region 1 boxed set are the same before buying.

Summary: Incomplete but nice, if you haven't gotten them already
Review: So our friend from Iraq doesn't have a hissy. I'll answer his question. Actually, he should have used the Sherlock Holmes method and he would have figured it out. There are 15 discs. Since Casebook and Memoirs are just coming out now and they contain 3 discs each (that makes 6), it's completely elementary what this set contains. All of The Adventures series (the 5 discs with David Burke as Watson), all the Return series (hour length with Edward Hardwicke, again 5 discs), and all the feature lengths (again 5 discs with Hardwicke). 5+5+5=15. As Burke's Watson said in The Dancing Men "How absurdly simple". Overall it's a nice purchase, but when you consider the Casebook is out now this week, and the Memoirs will be out this time next month, unless you already bought the other 15 discs as individuals and/or box sets, you're better off waiting for a 21 gun salute (I mean disc set). Those who did the former like me will just buy the sets we don't have. All in all, the complete series of 41 episodes are definitely worth owning on DVD. I'll miss Vincent Price and Diana Rigg's openings and closings, but well worth it. Just buy em, whether all in 1 set or as individuals, or individual box sets. BUY EM! :-)
