Summary: I bought the LEMON and learned that Sharp Customer Svc SUCKS
Review: Don't make the mistake of buying a Sharp product. I bought this unit two weeks before xmas, and half the movies I played were not viewable. After endless phone calls and hours of waiting to speak with a live person, I was instructed to send the unit for warranty repair to Tucker, GA (mind you I live in Charlotte, NC). Three weeks later I still haven't received a replacement unit (though I'm told one is on the way) and they refuse to give me a refund. They have also refused to reimburse me the $50 shipping cost for sending the unit to their nearest service center. The quality of the unit doesnt matter to me anymore. The BOTTOM LINE is that if you encounter a problem with it, it will be a NIGHTMARE to get your problem resolved. I mailed my unit in for repair on Dec. 31st. Today is January 18th, and I still don't have it back. Don't waste your time on a Sharp product. I know I won't ever again.

Summary: Won't Play DVD's Anymore
Review: I purchased the Sharp DVA1000 in 1999. I have schooled many friends and family members about the beauty of a dvd home theater. This system has excellent sound and video quality. This system makes me feel like I'm riding shotgun in action flicks like "Set It Off". And I felt like I could reach out and hand Taye Diggs a rubber duckie during the bubble bath scene in "The Best Man". Make sure you have at least a 32" TV with 500 lines of resolution to give your dvd system a proper canvas to paint your dvd dreams. Also, make sure you buy a dvd to calibrate your system and TV. If you own "T2" The Collectors Edition. Go to the menu for THX set-up and it will walk you thru making sure your sound and audio are properly adjusted for maximum quality. The only drawback to this system is that it can't play CDRs or CDRWs. It can only play traditional CDs. That's OK. I have a CD player for that. I plan on buying another Sharp DVA1000 for my bedroom in the very near future.Great price.Great system!P.S. I'm a woman and I assembled the system all by myself! It's easy if you follow the instructions. I had to read them several times before I built up my confidence.Don't let the big box overwhelm you. Even the speaker wire was included!I actually gave away my VCR after purchasing this system.:-)

Summary: An Excellent Buy!
Review: I purchased this system earlier this year and I am very pleased with its performance! The sound and picture quality are excellent. This system has everything you need for home theater setup at an incredible price. Try pricing speakers (including subwoofer), a receiver, and a DVD player with the AC-3 decoder and I would be shocked if you can find a better deal. Sharp has made an excellent system here at a great price. For under $1000 this is the best complete system you can buy!

Summary: Excellent product from SHARP
Review: I've had the unit for about two years now and I'm very satisfied. The quality of the picture and sound are excellent. It has 5.1 Surround and PRO Logic, which is a neat feature that let me hook up my VCR to one of the 3 AUX inputs and watch VHS tapes in surround (The VCR is HIFI stereo, also a SHARP, and the tapes have to be recorded with surround). It has advanced features like optical digital output and supports DTS. The speakers are very nice and they make it great both for movies and for music. The best part is that EVERYTHING YOU NEED IS INCLUDED (except for the popcorn)! Bottom line is that I highly recommend this unit to anyone who wants high-end home theatre experience at a great price!

Summary: My new Sharp DVD Broke the second day I had it
Review: Like the guy in NC, I bought this unit from Amazon on January 12, 2000. I got it, it played one movie, and then broke. The sound still works well, but the DVD player will not pick up any movies. The authorized sharp service dealer in Houston, Texas where I live will not fix it (for some reason), so I have to ship the damn thing to Independence Missouri to get it fixed. I had the damn thing 2 DAYS! What a pain in my butt.

Summary: Won't Play DVD's Anymore
Review: The stupid machine will not play DVD's anymore. It performed wonderfully at first, but not anymore. I have had nothing but problems with the machine. And don't get me started with Sharp
's technical support. They are horrible. The GA repair people are rude and inconsiderate. Don't buy this player because it will give you nothing but problems.

Summary: Good product - extremly poor (no) after sales support
Review: This is a very good feature package - an out of the box home theater minus a TV at a good price. That is why I bought it. It worked fine for a year (and I really enjoyed it as long as it was working fully) and now the system does not recognizes DVDs. It can still play CDs though, and the audio quality is still good.

Summary: Amazing
Review: This thing rocks! I have never heard or seen such a great home theater for under $1000. My friends and family are very impressed with the picture quality and sound (although, now my neighbors hate me). In fact, my parents have spent thousands on thier home theater and they couldn't believe what I paid for such a great system. If you want a simple home theater that doesn't take up your entire living room this is the system for you.

PS To the other reviewers having problems with the DTS...it works you just need to make a one step sound adjustment (it's in the the directions).

Summary: Excellent value for the money
Review: This unit is my first foray into the world of DVD and so far I'm impressed. I've watched 3 full-length movies and all played without a hitch. I've experienced no problems with soundtracks getting out of sync, which I've seen and heard about with some other players. I'm most impressed by the unit's flexible cabling options. I was able to connect my DirecTV receiver to the unit using the S-VHS connector, the unit back to my TV also using S-VHS, my video camera to the unit using RCA plugs (red-white-yellow), and the unit to my Philips CD Recorder also using RCA plugs, which allowed me to successfully record DVD soundtracks onto home audio CD's. The speakers are good but not great, but I think the quality is on par with the price. I only have two complaints. The first is that the drive motor can get pretty noisy depending on the laser's position on disc. It was quite loud at the beginning of "The Piano," for example, but then settled down. I suppose if you have an entertainment center with glass doors this wouldn't be a problem; my unit is out in the open. My second complaint is that it won't play CD-R's (like the ones my Philips recorder makes). This is common among the DVD units I've seen and is quite aggravating considering all the other formats they support. Otherwise I highly recommend it to those who want a great turnkey system at a great price.
