Rating: Summary: TENNESSEE IN LOUISIANA Review: ALBINO ALLIGATOR, Kevin Spacey's first movie as a director, is clearly divided into two distinctive parts. A prologue consisting in a tragic car chase and the confrontation of eight characters trapped in an old speakeasy in New-Orleans.During this second part of the film, I felt like watching one of these old movies inspired by Tennesse Williams's plays. Do you remember Kazan's A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, Mankiewicz's SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER or Brooks's CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF ? Well, in ALBINO ALLIGATOR, you are going to visit once again the sweaty world of the south, the (heavy...) sexual symbols so present in Tennesse Williams's plays as, for example in ALBINO ALLIGATOR the tunnel leading to nowhere land and, naturally, the eternal figure of THE MOTHER, present like Faye Dunaway or missing like William Fichtner's mom. If you like this kind of movie or not is strictly a matter of taste because cinematography and actors are great. A DVD for your analyst.
Rating: Summary: An intense flick with a hell of a bite Review: Unlike others, I did not find this movie, confusing or convoluted at all (Dr. Roberts from Austin needs to go back to med school). The film is paced with an unpredictable feel that catapults the viewer into the desperate situation inside Dino's Tavern. Kevin Spacey's direction is the work of a master, capturing a brief but awesome chase scene with chilling results, and sustaining a panick-driven mood throughout the unfolding story. Dillon is in fine form, as is Gary Sinise, the multi-talented thinking man's actor. The creepy William Fichtner plays such a psycho, you'd think he was born for this role. And, yes, Ms. Dunaway delivers another excellent performance. Sounds like the nay-sayers don't like psychological thrillers that are intentionally yet methodically paced in such a style that keeps us guessing and on the edge of our seats.
Rating: Summary: Confusing, convoluted, and under-developed plot. Review: When a new screenwriter is trying to get his script made, the best way to draw attention (nee money) is to attach a star, someone with visibility, someone bankable. Surprisingly, I don't think stars really read a lot of scripts, certainly not all the way through, certainly not with a mindset toward how to make this into a good, completed film. At the time this film was made, Kevin Spacey was hot, very hot. His performances in Seven, Swimming with Sharks, and The Usual Suspects had brought him not only rave reviews, but an Academy Award. His want to direct, this inherent heat, plus his ability to attract additional star power, namely Faye Dunaway, Matt Dillon, and Gary Sinise, and a spec script from a first time writer had the financial backing it needed. Maybe Albino Alligator would have been a weak film in even the most accomplished hands, it certainly is a weak film in this first time director's. The premise is sketchy, the through line distorted and vague. Some of the characterizations seem forced, or contrived, as if, for example, Faye Dunaway (or Gary Sinise)'s part were quickly created or expanded to accommodate their agreeing to particpate. Many good young film makers are making daring, exciting, edgy films right now. This is not one of them.
Rating: Summary: Where does one begin? Review: Bad, bad, bad. Nothing is good about this film. Nothing. The performances are overblown and director Spacey, such a talented actor, here directs every moment to be a major one, allowing nothing to just happen. Such talent is wasted here.
Rating: Summary: Pretty good flick Review: Good Dillon pick. There was a lot of fights and double crosses. Good to watch if you are bored or tired. It's plot is very original and suspenseful. The only problem is that it lasts too long. They good have made it about a half hour shorter.
Rating: Summary: Great directing from Spacey Review: Three (or is it four?) crooks caught in a one-room bar with hostages. Smacks of Resevoir Dogs at it's best, but drags along and loses direction occasionally. Overall, a great film. Matt Dillon plays a man caught between the influences of his brother and a vicious criminal remarkably well.
Rating: Summary: Albino Alligator Review Review: This film is one of those few films that jump right into the action sequence and engages the viewer almost immediately. And although it is quick to enter into an action sequence, after the first 15 minutes the plot begins to develop somewhat slowly. To view this movie patience is required, since we get an indebt view of each character and get an idea of what drives them in the situation that surrounds them. Magnificent acting on behalf of William Fichtner (hard to believe he was the blind scientist in Contact). Yet, as lengthy as the plot development may be the unveiling is definitely worth the viewing.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant!! Review: Great directorial debut from Spacey! Wonderful camera work, great acting. The movie kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing. You will not want to miss this!
Rating: Summary: An attempt by great stars to make something from nothing. Review: Only Sinise's performance as the crook with a heart and Dunaway's tough but motherly bar maid saved this from untimate disaster. If it had a reason for being I failed to discern it. Same thing goes for a plot
Rating: Summary: Wonderful directiorial debut for Spacey Review: This is probably one of the best character development dramas there is. Matt Dillon shines, as always, with Gary Sinise playing to the hilt as is his style, and an INTENSE, AMAZING performance by the (unfortunatly) little-known William Fichtner. Go see it, you couldn't find a better way to spend two hours.
