Summary: I can handle the truth, but what is it?
Review: I had never heard of this film until a friend loaned it to me. Wow! If this were a book, I call it a "page-turner". The film starts off with Cuba Gooding, Jr. in jail, then flashes back to tell you how he got there. The story is a complex one, with many dead-ends, false leads, twists, and turns. You don't know the truth until the last ten minutes, and then you don't know the result until five minutes or so later. At the end of the film, you are still left trying to figure out the right and wrong of it, which might be quite different from the guilt-innocent and legal-illegal dichotomies, at least for this story. In some ways, it is an indictment, or at least a strong note of skepticism, about the justice system.

In structure, the film reminds of the film noir "D.O.A." with a doomed man giving you a flashback telling you how he was victimized and sought revenge or some form of justice.

Cuba Gooding, Jr. does an excellent job of portraying a basically moral man trying to remain so around those who are wealthy, ruthless, and unscupulous. He is generally, but not wholly, likable. In other words, he is quite realistic, given the role.

Overall, this is a rich, complex, gripping tale that is well-told.

Summary: Lots of Promise........But
Review: I just finished watching the video on a dark and chilly August night in Arctic Alaska. The plot had a lot of promise, with its numerous twists....and the New Orleans and Key West locales were great......especially the New Orleans Garden District.

I've admired Cuba Gooding for Boys in the Hood, but here he doesn't seem like a person being hunted by the law. He is too laid back and seems to be laughing at his own character.

The other characters are not really developed and I couln't always see Berringer and Gooding too clearly because they were always smoking. I really wish it had been better. Gooding has lots of promise......but we may have to wait for his next couple of efforts. Earl Finkler

Summary: Top Notch Mystery Movie
Review: I watched this the day after I watched "The Sixth Sense" and I liked this more. Well written with a strong plot that keeps your attention and really makes you think. Cuba Gooding, Jr. is very believable. If you like mysteries, you will enjoy this movie.

Summary: Clever plot - interesting twists!
Review: In this suspense yarn, Gooding plays a recently disbarred attorney who finds himself in a Kafka-esque situation, charged with murder and on the lamb. Gooding is great in the role, as is Tom Berringer playing the cop who's after him. But what is really captivating is the plot, with very surprising twists and terrific suspense. Thoughtful and intelligent - very entertaining and well worth seeing. Only four stars because some might say its a bit predictable - but I didn't find that detracted much at all.

Summary: Intriguing plot, fairly but not greatly well performed.
Review: Intriguing plot line with captivating twists - a lawyer becomes the plagiarist author of a best-selling book describing several murders, which murders unbeknownst to him actually occurrred. He becomes the prime suspect but, somewhat convolutedly, runs down the truth. The tale captures your attention, like a book you don't want to put down. But, with some exceptions, the acting is so-so. Something lacks in Cuba Gooding's performance, he doesn't "grab" you. The fetching young book publisheress, who becomes his patron and lover, is unbelievable. Beringer is OK but possibly overplays his role as the tough cop. Most skilled performance in the film is by Mark Pellegrino, who plays five (!) roles adeptly, though one of his roles (the old man) is rather contrived. A short on the DVD showing his makeup processes for the five roles is interesting. Don't expect miracles, but if you fancy mysteries with intriguing twists, this one is worthwhile. -- Tom in Ocean City, MD, joined in by Linda of Salisbury, MD

Summary: A smart thriller that is one of the best ever made
Review: One of my favorite movies of all time, this film teaches a number of moral lessons as it takes the audience on a bungee ride of suspense and murder. In the classic Shakespeare tradition (King Lear; Hamlet), the protoganist Cuba Gooding, takes a tremendous fall from power, wealth, and acclaim to find himself a fugitive thanks to his plagirized book in which he accurately tells of a number of gruesome murders, including details that only the killer could know. The ensuing manhant and redemption rank up there with the best potboilers of their kind (Fugitive), and the smart intelligent script weaves a number of literary allegories into the plot that left an impact on me long after I finished viewing it.

Summary: I'd have given it no stars if it were only possible
Review: Please, please, PLEASE, do not see this movie (much less actually BUY it)!! It is without a doubt the WORST movie that I have ever seen. I honestly don't understand how people can possibly have liked it. The acting is all TERRIBLE - especially Cuba Gooding Jr.'s (what happened to him?). The plot is predictable and unexciting - the chase scenes are ridiculous attempts at suspense and, to put it lightly, the characters are outrageously unrealistic (picture cardboard cutouts with no real emotions). I'm just glad I saw this on Showtime and was spared the injustice of having to pay to see it. Please, if you value good entertainment, DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE! EVER!
