Summary: sex is loveless
Review: well if you like pornagraphy! you'll hate this movie, this movie goes to war with the porn industry and rips it apart leaving just the horrible disgusting aspects of it. I didn't really appreciate Cage's other performances, but maybe it was the movies, anyway, i didn't think Cage had this kind of performance in him but he was ready and willing to throw himself deep into this performance. WARNING: this movie makes you think and you'll fell weird after experiencing this movie, it will effect you! enjoy

Summary: Writer for seven does it again in this dark new film.
Review: Writer Andrew Kevin Walker and Director Joel Schumacher do this strange suspense film about a teenager getting murder on film and is it true or not. A good Showcase for actor Nicolas Cage is one of his best films but this film is not for all taste, even for some Cages Fans. Great acting all around, and writer from Seven does good research on this film on the underworld of pronography. Director Schumacher brings one of his best films and an good running commentary track from the Director. Joaquin Phenoix is good also in this film. Grade:A-. Panavision.

Summary: 8mm is a Killer!
Review: This movie was indeed, very disturbing. At times, the viewer must force himself not to cover his eyes. I am one of those who managed to see the movie all the way through. Although some elements of the plot were unoriginal, the overall theme is one that I have never encountered. Before this movie, I had never heard of a snuff film! Overall, I think this movie is an excellent choice for those who relish the grotesque. If you like this kind of movie, I also feel that you may enjoy "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer." The movie isn't as polished as 8mm, but it lends more credibility.

Summary: better than its reviews
Review: This movie is clearly better than its reviews. It may be too slow and too unsetting to be seen in a theater, though.

Summary: Hmmmmm....
Review: I consider myself pretty open-minded. But I have to say that this movie really bothers me. The question that has run through my mind since the first time I saw it was "Did this movie really need to be made?" Maybe it did, maybe it didn't..I still haven't resolved that question. I have watched it 3 times now. I have to admit that it's very well done, but INCREDIBLY disturbing. The actors (Cage, Phoenix, Gandolfini, etc) are all terrific. The mood is dark and some scenes ring all too real (the underground markets for porno items). But the bottom line is this: the film made me think and it made me feel, for HOURS and DAYS after I saw it. And for that, no matter how disgusted or disturbed I may be about the subject matter or whether the film should have been made, it deserves at least 4 stars. It's not for the weak of mind or constitution; don't watch it on a night that you just want some light hearted entertainment. Save it for when you are alone and introspective. Turn down the lights, and make sure you have a big bowl of popcorn and a few shots of tequila at your side.

Summary: Forget those limp reviews: this is the best film of 1998-99
Review: Cage and Schumacher examine in horrifying and brilliant detail what motivates people to do or become evil, what overcomes evil, and what evil does to the good, the naive, and the bad. Yes, it could have been a little less ponderous and a little more compact, but that hardly is a blemish in this movie. If you're looking for cartoonish, stylized morality plays, go see a movie like "Fatal Attraction,." cuz this ain't it. This movie has a theme more in common with "Rope" and a sick, moody glossiness worthy of "Seven." Speaking of those movies, this movie reaks with Nietzsche and the consequences of the terminous of his philosophy, but regardless of that fact, the movie does not wallow in narcissistic existentialism because it is also concerned with justice, which it ultimately delivers in a fashion worthy of James Dickey.

Summary: Boo.
Review: Ugh. What was this? What a trashy movie this was. No redeeming quality whatsoever. Joel Schumacher sure does know how to muck a movie up, eh? Cage gave it his all, but he just wasn't believable. The only truly good thing about this movie was Peter Stormare. This was on lots of critic's "Worst Of The Year" lists, and for once, I actually agree with them. Avoid at all costs. But if you're a Cage nut, rent it. If you buy it' you'll be kicking yourself.

Summary: Schumacher strikes again!
Review: You guessed it, another Schumacher film, another disappointment. I wish Schumacher would just pack his bags and go home. But instead Hollywood keeps paying him, for reasons unknown to any man on earth.

Actually, this movie may not be as gross as you think. Sure, the subject matter is disturbing, but the final portrayal is not nearly as disgusting as I was expecting.

It's a totally watchable and entertaining film. It isn't good or anything, but at least it passed the time at a reasonable rate. It did not bore me at all. Some of the mystery elements established early helped. That is why I give it three stars.

My advice: If you really want to see it, don't pay money. Maybe pick it up with a rent-one, rent-one-free deal at your local video store. Or watch it on cable. Then you won't feel burned.

Summary: A Thrilling drama !
Review: I was outstounded after watching this film at the cinema last May. Although what critics say this film is one that has to be seen, it takes a very serious subject and turns it into a entertaining thriller, but it was the element of drama which I liked. Cage's performance is excellent as he portays a man and his obsession with a girl which was raped and murdered and was, to him, a complete stranger. Yes, it does deal with a sick subject, but it also raises a question that we all can relate to - how far would someone go to right a wrong? And to be very careful that 'that devil doesn't change you'. It takes a good look at what society is like today and just how sick the human mind can get.

A must see film for all who can stomach it.

Summary: Geniunely Disturbing
Review: 8mm is a breakthrough move in many aspects. The cinematography is excellent, and the tone of the entire movie remains dark and grim. The plot is very original, and although it won't appeal to many people, it must be respected that filmmakers would actually venture out this far and make a movie which aims to disturb everyone.

I am a fan of Nicolas Cage, but I was rather dissapointed with his performance. He had some good one liners and displayed his anger well, but overall he came out more like a 2 dimensional character. The real star of the film was Joaqiun Phoenix, the porn shop owner hired by Cage, who delivered a realistic and exceptional performance.

I do reccoment watching the film. It's something that needs to be experienced by everyone. Some people won't be able to sleep at night, other's will watch it without any problems, and some might even be fascinated by the idea of watching someone's death on film. All in all, this is a movie that made a huge impact on the way I define the word "disturbing", and it will too for everyone else that chooses to watch it. Reccomended.
