Summary: WOW!
Review: This is a MASTERPIECE in terms of style. What a trip. This is almost better than Mulholland Dr. The opening sequence at Cannes has to be seen to be believed. This is just amazing craftwork, visually, and especially musically featuring the brilliant Ryuichi Sakamoto. I suppose the only flaw it has is Stamos' line readings. They can be a tad stiff. She makes up for it in MANY other ways (watch her througout and you'll see what I mean). It's mesmerizing and unpredictable.

Review:
Ugh -- what a disgusting and truly unsympathetic, morally bankrupt, hollow and corrupt main character! Did I mention I HATED this character especially? Who cares about any of the other stuff after discovering the character's true 'character'? In my estimation, nothing about this character could be considered remotely erotic after this discovery.

WARNING: spoilers!

How can anyone work up any miniscule ability to care about a (sociopathic) sleazebag character who stands idly by and watches/ALLOWS another desperately grieving human being who has just lost her entire family -- (and who the main character just happens to look exactly like) -- to commit suicide with no minor or feeble attempt to intervene, no indication of being moved by it, and then exploits it without any semblance of a conscience.

This film was not a joy to watch by any means -- totally dehumanizing voyeurism and i confess, i stopped watching after the suicide.

Style without substance is an appallingly imprecise and diminuitive understatement.

Blech and feh. Waste of film.

Summary: Heavy on Style, Light on Story...and Maturity
Review: If you liked the opening of this film, then you'll probably like the whole thing. You've got a jewel heist during a film premiere in Paris. Intricate and cumbersome. Zero character introduction/development. Pure process. Despite all this precision planning and execution, the heist relies on a hot young woman's willingness to be ravished by another hot young woman in a public toilet stall.
I could've admired the ingenuity of the caper if it didn't revolve around a Dear Forum letter from Penthouse magazine.
But, then again, the girls were hot and I doubt that I would've stayed as interested--so there you go.

Anotonio Banderas looks like a character from another film who's stumbled in while trying to figure out where he's supposed to go. Rebecca Romjin-Stamos is really trying to get a film career going but this role could've just as easily been played by Shannon Tweed or Tanya Roberts.

The story goes through some serious contortions to reach its point, which I liked, but it felt odd: a sexy thriller with a sentimental fable-like ending.
I watch DePalma films but I usually end up feeling the same way about all of them: stylistically interesting (if derivitive), unsympathetic characters, slow-motion at the worst time, complicated stories/sequences--but watchable and more interesting than most of the lame thrillers put out by studios.

Summary: sparkel22 watch it again and learn!
Review: No offense intended towards the reviewer name "Sparkel" but he/she needs to WATCH the movie, in its entirety to KNOW why the woman in the bathroom stall 'allowed' her diamonds to be stolen. ...went right over your head i guess.

loved the film, and was suprised that i waited over a year to see it and was refreshingly suprised with what i saw. EVEN if you disagree with depalma's style or the overall quality of the film, you'll (provided you're breathing) will love the visuals and how stunningly beautiful rebecca and her french 'freind' are.

sit back and enjoy this one!

Summary: A mesmorizing classic!
Review: this movie is amazing from beginning to the end. It's even better when you watch it for the 2nd or even the 3rd time because you see clues you didn't see before and appreciate the stylish and the artistic film and also understand the film better. the story is great and clever and never slows down to the end. I was totally mesmorized. many people didn't like this movie. It'll be one of those films that people either didn't like or missed that will be a total classic in the future. It's one of the best movies I've seen in the past 5 years. It's totally non-hollywood so if you like that kind of movie, you won't like this, which is very intelligent.
