Summary: Subwoofer could pack a better punch, but otherwise, great!!
Review: ... After shopping around various stores and online retailers for a week of two, I found Amazon offered at the lowest price. ...It arrived a few days later, and I couldn't be more pleased!
The satellite speakers in the towers are amazing. I don't know how such small speakers can be so powerful. The one downside I noticed was that the subwoofer is not as powerful as it could be (maybe it if it had it's own amplifier, Sony?).
Overall, the system is awesome. It is extrememly easy to set up, even for those who have trouble with eletronics. The DVD player provides some of the crispest images I've ever seen. As a home theater system, I am hard pressed to see how it could do any better.

Review: CAN ANYBODY SELL ME A PAIR OF SPEAKERS AS FEATURED ON THIS
I WANT TO BUY SPEAKERS EXACTLY THIS.SPEAKERS FOR SONY DVD DREAM SYSTEM (DAV-C990)

Summary: Disappointing
Review: Design flaw - when you are listening to the tuner and you eject a cd, dvd, the tuner stops
you get the cheapest of cheap cables to connect it to a sony tv - bought incidentally at the same time. (Sony tv has s-video connection at the side - great for camcorders but damn all use if you want to connect it to this unit permanently)
speakers should be wireless for this money.
Wanted to like this unit but very, very disappointed. Looks are deceiving.

Summary: EXCELLENT SYSTEM, WONDEFUL SOUND, GREAT PRICE
Review: FIRST: The AMAZON.COM retail price was about 25% lower than I could find elsewhere, brand new, for a total saving of about $450 (including rebate from Sony).
Fast shipping (one week for delivery from east to west coast).
Easy ordering, good service.
Simple set-up, using color-coding. Intuitively obvious.
The styling is characteristically Sony ... contemporary and a work of metallic art, particularly the five tall, very narrow speakers. The sound is encompassing and very clear. The music is beautiful, which is why I bought it. It is for my study. All features operate effortlessly and smoothly. It is a joy to use.
The oft-noted exception is the fairly complex remote control, with relatively tiny buttons. Contrary to other reviewers, I found it easy to use, but all the features take a bit of experiential learning.
It greatly enhances the look and feel of a room.
Perhaps it is not for "audiophiles" and I am not one. I simply love the great classical music and amnbience this wondeful-looking system produces.
And ... as usual with Amazon.com, the price is quite unbeatable.

Summary: Sounds great, but loading/switching time is ridiculous
Review: I bought this along with Sony's 42" plasma TV to regain some space in our living room (previous rear projection screen, Sony ES series amp with Cambridge Soundworks speakers). Didn't expect the surround imaging to be so much better with the CA990. Great, clear sound for both movies and acoustic instrument CD's. Big complaint: ridiculous disc loading and swapping times. Also, when using component video connection and progressive scan mode, composite inputs are not "upconverted" (unfortunate given the plasma's dirth of inputs). [...]

Summary: The worst disc changing system I've ever come across.
Review: I bought this unit after playing around with my friend's DAV-C450, thinking I'd be getting a newer and better model. Newer yes, better, not quite. After 4 months of use, I can safely say that this system left me less than satisfied for two reasons:

1. Disc Changer - The most annoying thing about this unit is how long it took me to change and load a new disc. Be prepared to spend about a minute to get one disc out and a new one in. Makes me wish it had a 5 disc tray instead of a single disc slot. Also, you can't have one disc playing while changing another unlike the older models.

2. Remote Control - What's up with the remote? Tiny little buttons and the lack of an on-screen display makes it feel outdated and clunky. Compared to Sony's own TiVo remote (no need to read the manual), the DAV-C990's remote seems very complicated to use.

Bottom line: Unless you absolutely have to have MP3 and SACD capability, skip this and go for the DAV-C450 instead. The better speakers aren't worth the money.

Summary: Great Sound, Unbeatable Price
Review: I have had my DAV-C990 for over a week now, and can find very little to complain about. The system sounds amazing, looks very sharp and is well designed to fit into any room.

I use it primarily for the SACD and DVD player, however it also works as a radio and you can attach two other inputs to the receiver. The OSD appears exactly the same as our high-end Sony SACD/DVD player in the main room.

One complaint I'd read about before purchasing was the lack of a backlit remote, however I discovered last night that the remote glows very well when you turn out the lights!

The only two features I feel this system is lacking are: 1) alarm clock [waking up to an SACD would be amazing] and 2) a sleep timer. Sony should have recognized this unit would end up mainly in bedrooms and small family rooms. However even considering these two items, this unit firmly deserves the 5 star rating.
