Summary: An utter Joke for science fiction
Review: The only people that like this movie are 12 year old boys and adults with a fear of reality. Terrible, awful and really boring.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Very weird, but very good, also.
Review: This is a fun movie to watch late at night. It is freaky and suspensful, and filled with good performances from the entire cast.

It's about this group of people who go to investigate what seems to be an abandoned spacecraft, which is under the sea. They find this spherical alien object in the spacecraft, and they are all curious as to what it is. They sure do find that out during the course of the film, as strange things start to happen aboard the craft. It all leads up to psychological terror, and paranoia between everyone in the crew.

This is a great movie (the book was good too) and if you are looking for an underwater adventure, or something that will keep you on the edge of your seat, than this film is the ticket!

Watch and enjoy!

Summary: Forbidden Planet Similarities
Review: When I read the book by Michael Crichton, I somehow felt that the story of the spaceship from the future and the story of the sphere were two different incomplete stories roughly merged to create a book. The story of the spaceship from the future was intriguing, but rapidly deflated and served only to lead into the second story about the sphere. The basic concept underlying the sphere was borrowed from an earlier movie "The Forbidden Planet" made over 40 years earlier. In the 1956 classic, the monster of Dr. Morbius' subconscious became murderously real through the use of alien technolgy. In "The Sphere", the giant squid and other menaces from the characters' subconsciouses became reality via the alien sphere.

After having read the book, I looked forward to seeing the movie, expecting a good performance by Dustin Hoffman and Samuel Jackson. But when I noticed the promotional poster only showed the faces of the cast rather than the sphere itself or the spaceship, I began to fear the worst. The poor choice of Sharon Stone for her role was evident immediately, and was not overshaddowed by the disappointing limp acting of the others.

You must read the book and view the movie or perhaps just read the book and forget the movie, for the movie alone leaves out essential and vital details to understanding the concept of the sphere. Or better yet, view "The Forbidden Planet" instead!

Summary: Don't rent or watch me
Review: I did not like this movie and that has nothing to do with the fact that i read the book.

This movie is a failure because the director failed to capture the notion of hysteria. What you get is small amounts of confusions.

The story is about the unknown, and confusion would mean that people are not sure about certain things. Following what the SPHERE is supposed to do and be, everything is possible and anything can happen. There should be hysteria.

The movies makes attempts at greatness, but falls short because of minor issues. For example, toward the end, three survivors are being held for debriefing, and you see the sub-title Day One on the screen. For affect, shouldn't it say Day three. Then the viewer would think, wow, three days, in a room, with nothing to do, wow. Instead, we see, day one, and then the movie is over.

Summary: Sphere
Review: I was reading the reviews for 'Sphere' and was so frustrated i had to write one of my own. All the reviews i read refer to this movie, basically, as a waste of time. I would have to stronly disagree. Quite honestly, this is one of my favorite movies! It has a lot of detail that you have to pay attention to to understand, and it's one of those movies that carries the suspense and doesn't make sense until the very end. In my opinion, this is a great sci-fi movie, if you're into that sort of thing. I like it so much that i went out and bought the book after I bought the movie. In my opinion, this is deffinitely worth your while.

Summary: Another missed chance to make a good movie.
Review: Barry Levinson became another director who tried but failed to make a good movie adaptation of one of Michael Crichton's better written books. The movie did run into some production problems and you can see them in this not-so finished film. The mysterious nature of the Sphere is toned down to a pointless series of questions. The good acting of Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Peter Coyote can not salavge anything here and Sharon Stone was not a good choice to play Beth. Forgetable musical score by Elliot Goldentall.

Summary: One for many
Review: This movie is for those that like a challenge while viewing, and it helps to have a working knowledge of basic physics, biology, or to just be able to understand and appreciate laws/theories of science. The acting is great, the suttle allusion made between Hoffman and Stone's characters lightened up the dialogue, Samuel Jackson is one of my favorite actors and definitely didn't dissappoint me with this one. This movie will bore you if you don't like engaging in conversations (or even just thinking alone) about scientific "what if's?" or just don't appreciate thinking about the psychological dillemmas and dynamics that occur between humans that become confronted with a near, present, and unpredictable (insurmisable) danger. But I say this, you don't have to be an MIT graduate to appreciate this Sci-Fi movie (my best friend went to MIT, I went to Brown, so maybe that's why I liked it), but if you're an intellectual, this movie provides you with something to see and think about.

Summary: A bad movie? Um... okay.
Review: As a regular sci-fi/mystery buff, I appreciate such films with a compelling, genuinely thought-provoking story; you'll find that in "Sphere," a faithful adaptation of a fantastic Michael Crichton novel. I appreciate great acting; you'll find that in "Sphere," starring Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson. I appreciate special effects that are (at least) passively realistic and inoffensive to my visual intelligence; you'll find that and more in "Sphere," a film that showcases some fantastic CGI by special effects-powerhouse Industrial Light and Magic. Lastly, in a film of this nature I appreciate an honest attempt to scare audiences without being unnecessarily gory. Fancy that -- you can find it in "Sphere," a film that had me on the edge of my seat until the finale. The ending isn't hard to understand at all (I suspect that most people were just thinking too hard about it), and I found it pleasantly original, satisfying, and befitting of the overall, mysterious theme.

What I don't understand is why so few people actually *enjoyed* this movie. What is so wrong with it? There are far, far, *far* worse sci-fi flicks out there, believe me. Fans of the novel have no excuse to hate this film because the screenplay stays relatively true to the text from which it originated. Okay, so the story is a little contrived -- big deal. So are a lot of stories in *other* movies, and that certainly doesn't stop them from achieving critical and box-office success. So what is everybody so afraid of about this picture? That it requires you to *think* to know what's going on? To put it bluntly, "Sphere" is far too well-crafted to deserve such scathing criticism. Is it the best movie ever made? Of course not, don't be rediculous. But is it worth seeing? You bet. Is it worth owning? Hell yeah -- the DVD is fabulous. "Sphere" makes a nice addition to any sci-fi film collection; I've added it to mine proudly.

Review: I am giving an updated review on the dvd version of this film, so here it goes. The dvd, as far as quality, is great. I hate to be just another person that says the book was better...but it was. Sphere, the movie, is housed with wonderful talents...but what I may say now will probably shock you. Even though the book had more than enough dialogue for the characters...they didn't use it. In the audio commentary, Samuel L. Jackson says that they would make up the dialogue right before shooting, sometimes while shooting. They did good. But, I think an 86 million dollar production could suffice for a few screenwriters. If I had 86 mil I think I could probable squeeze it into my budget. I will give one area of the dvd 5 stars, and that would be the theatrical trailer. It does wonders for suckering you into wanting to see the movie, and rattles the stuffins outta your sound system. I hate being decieved about things, such as the back of the dvd which reads: "Audio commentary by Dustin hoffman and Samuel L. Jackson!" But only the absolute reverse is true. I think Hoffman, though I am sure he had measure, didn't say 4 lines, while Jackson talked the entire time about everything. If it had said "Jackson, with Hoffman" (even though you can tell they aren't together) I would have made allowances. I liked listening to Jackson, he was excited about the movie, and seemed blessed just to be there. Hoffman Explained why the movie failed. 5 stars for Jackson. There is still a movie to be made, when enough time has passed for hollywood to be allowed a remake. I may be old and gray be then, but by golly, I will go and see it.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: Here's a great concept: a space ship is found under water that crashed here about 300 years ago. More to the great concept: the space ship is one of ours from our future. It came from our future and crashed back to earth in their and our past. Or you could say 300 years ago a space ship crashed on earth, and was discovered now. Think of the possible outcomes, we learn about our future and whatever possible disasters that will happen, alien encounters, how advanced we become, whatever. What we get is a boring Sphere. It has an effect on everyone making them paronoid and hallucinating, who cares. The sphere contains a child like entity. It becomes a horror movie. A great cast wasted. I was very disappointed.
