Summary: Stop-Motion Live-Action
Review: A bizarre and engrossing mix of stop-motion live actors and claymation is used in this reworking of the old Tom Thumb story. This new Tom is created utilizing genetically engineered baby goo, and his clay self is born to normal but inept parents. Ominous men in black lurk in the grimy shadows, waiting to snatch young Tom, but the boy manages to find his way back to the lab where the mystery of his origins, and others like him, await.

Summary: Secret Adven. of Tom Thumb (1994) d: Borthwick, Dave
Review: Dark Bolex Bros. fantasy about the life of a miniature baby born into a world of giant misfits & social freaks who grunt and coo without saying anything intelligent. Out of step time and place, populated by scurrying spiders and other unidentifiable species of insects makes this piece much like the films of the Brothers Quay or the outstanding work of animation master Jan Svankmajer. This is a weird film that blends live-action footage with stop-motion claymation set in a world of dark back alleys; high tech labs, and swampy landscapes of garbage ruins. Tom Thumb is stolen from his home in the seedy part of town by sinister government agents. He later escapes from an evil lab where mutation experiments are performed. Narrowly escaping he finds himself in a land of people his own size fighting the big people alongside Jack the Giant killer. Genuine horror and moving moments that have the power to unsettle and enchant in equal measure. Definitely one of the most intoxicating and mesmerizing animated films I've seen in a very long time.

Summary: Animation at its mysterious and enchanting.
Review: I came upon this in the library and have since bought and given it several times. A combination of claymation and stop action, this is a magical world of strange creatures and laboratories, of tiny people you fall in love with, and evildoers who cannot win in the end.

Imagine City of Lost Children, blended with a bit of the Popeye movie and Peewee's playhouse... it's absorbing and complex, taking you to worlds within worlds.

And the soundtrack... noises, pings, music and mutterings, the soundtrack could stand on its own as an atmospheric soundscape.

Why is this movie not known? See it.

Summary: Somewhat disturbing.
Review: I have watched this film about a dozen times, and every time I see details that I had previously overlooked. The stop motion photography with the 'strobe' style live action in addition to the attention to detail make this a don't miss. But at the same time it is a very dark story. If you can't handle disturbing images or are not in the right frame of mind for it, then you won't like it. All said, I reccomend this to anyone who can think for themselves.

Summary: random hideous nonsense
Review: I kept watching even though I hated it more and more, because I thought maybe something sensible will happen... But I quit after half an hour or so. It's one of these efforts by someone who feels all inspired to do something different and original, and doesn't realize that he lacks the requisite intelligence and talent.

Summary: 2nd Coming of Christ?
Review: I originally saw this at college while annebriated, then absolutely had to go back and watch it again sober. Then I had to buy the VHS, and now am eyeing the DVD.

Rather than listening to dialogue, you must use your eyes to "hear" what is going on. Several friends went along with me to see this at college, and they were strangely satisfied when I described it as a portrayal of Tom Thumb as a pawn (or son of) God sent to quietly liberate a hopelessly degraded and lost humanity. In this world, science has imprisoned God, and Tom is there to liberate him.

While the film was quiet (virtually no dialogue), my mind was alive with thoughts; this experience is truly a refreshing one.
