Summary: Like a shorter, slightly above average episode
Review: MST3K: The Movie is about as funny as an above average pisode of the TV show. The only real problem is that it is significantly shorter (76min compared to 90min) than a regular episode and the host segments aren't really all that funny. The jokes while the movie is playing are very funny for the most part, but there are certain times when it seems like a lot of it has been dumbed down a bit for a mass audience (which is probably a result of the studio insisting upon it). I think this movie would make a good primer for people who are looking to try MST for the first time. Slightly more mass appeal, explains the premise, short, and entertaining. Not the best they've ever done, but still a lot of fun to watch.
There is nothing special on the DVD, though, so if you are looking for commentaries and similar features then I wouldn't suggest this.

Summary: Not bad, but nothing special
Review: This never came to a theatre near me, so I was eager to get the video when it came out. However, it really plays like little more than an average version of the tv show. It's good if you like most of their shows, but nothing particularly unique.

Summary: The Great Litmus Test of Personality
Review: Irreverant, iconoclastic, cerebral, quick-witted, subtle and uproariously funny, this movie (and the TV series it grew out of) is a National Treasure -- one of the best things to emerge from American Culture in the 20th century.

I had a grandmother, born in Arizona in 1884, who could have been a writer for MST3K. This is our family's brand of humor, now so deeply ingrained in my children that I fear for their future in-law relationships.

Not everyone gets MST3K, which is a good thing. It acts as the great litmus test of personality. See how a person reacts to "This Island Earth", and discover how deep the humanity runs.

Summary: MST3K..We love ya!
Review: MST3K was the greatest show on TV...There are many episodes that are even funnier than the movie...but Universal didn't get the humor, so it was watered down some...Still a great flick!

Summary: HILARIOUS MOVIE, BASED ON A HILARIOUS SHOW.
Review: This was the funniest movie in recent memory, based on the funniest show in recent memory. Yes, better than, dare I say it? I dare..Seinfeld!! Why the show was ever canceled, with all the... Hollywood dols out every year just waiting to be MSTied, I'll never know. It could've run forever, just like you'll want this movie to, and never run out of material. This movie was funny from start to finish, it has the freshest most literate, without taking itself too seriously, material of any comedy in recent memory, like when Mike bumps the S.O.L. into the Hubble telescope prompting Servo and Crow to chime in with "Mike broke the Hubble, Mike broke the Hubble" and the spot on delivery of the main characters is impecable. Bottem line is if you want true laugh til it hurts laughs, this is the movie to give them to you. Just like the show did, it was the most refeshingly funny show on, so of course they canned it. Catch the reruns on Sci Fi, before there gone too.

Summary: The Funniest Movie EVER
Review: Okay, so I LOVE the tv show MST3K. This movie is so intensely hilarious. The sad thing is that it's the movie they're watching that is so funny. I had to watch the last 20 minutes of this movie 4 times because I was laughing so hard! Even without the "commentary" I would have had to watch it that many times. The movie they watch is SOOO bad that it's hysterical. I couldn't stop laughing. If you want to laugh...this is IT!

Summary: MST3K: Hard to Find, Hard to Forget
Review: MST3K (Mystery Science Theater 3000) was a ground-breaking genre-buster. American movie culture had already seen the rise of the horror-movie show, usually with outrageous and witty hosts like Elvira or the unforgettable Zachary. However, MST3K truly integrated the concept of audience response. HAve you ever gotten together with friends to watch a cheesy sci-fi or horror movie, only to find yourselves ad-libbing your own wisecracks into the dialogue? That is the whole MST3K concept. Mike Nelson and his two robot friends Tom Servo and Crow are forced by an evil scientist to watch the worst movies imaginable in an attempt to break their spirits. However, throughout the film, we see their silhouettes against a movie screen as they quip their way through the entire movie. For instance, as a meteor crashes in the movie, we hear one of the robots say, "Oh no! Tinkerbell's goin' down! Pull up, Tink!". In MST3K: The Movie, the trio is forced to watch the 1950's sci-fi sleeper "This Island Earth" We watch them as they watch the movie, ad-libbing the entire script. The original dialogues are left in, so the result is a text within a text. A concept hard to describe, and even harder not to enjoy.

Summary: A fond farewell to MST3K, we hardly knew ye
Review: As I write this, MST3K is scheduled to leave the Sci Fi channel at the end of December. As a fan of MST3k for over 6 years, I'm saddened but hope that the series finds new life in video and DVD.

The movie itself is hilarious, although it shows signs of being heavily edited. It's sad that it didn't achieve wider release in during its original 1996 run. MST3K is not for everyone...the riffs and pop culture references assume its audience is intelligent, well-read, and appreciative of pop culture and film history. Unfortunately MST3K never appealed to the "American Pie" and "Austin Powers: The Spy That Shagged Me" audience. Nothing against those films, but there is a time and place for more sophisticated fare.

It's a tragedy that Rhino has not been able to secure the rights for more releases from the Comedy Central days. With some persistence (and transition of some films into the public domain) hopefully we'll see some DVDs. I'd hate to be cut off completely!

Good luck BBI, wherever you are...

Summary: Mst3k rocks
Review: Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie will have you busting your sides with laughter even if you are not a big fan of the show. Although the sketches could have used some work, and there seem to be a few less jokes than normal during the movie the jokes that are there are of the highest quality and perfectly timed and though some are now a bit dated (whatch the movie for one or two Clinton jokes)they will still have you in stiches. Even if you are just a causual fan this is a must own disc.
