Summary: Sci Fi that makes you think
Review: Is it just me or sci fi movies were better when there were less special effects resources? A strong plot moves with a nice pace that unfolds as you watch, making you think about the possibility of a world without nature. Beautifully photographed, the movie retains that 70's Sci Fi quality (2001, Star Wars:ANH) in it's production design and effects. Great perfomance by Bruce Dern completes the scene to make Silent Running a true Sci Fi Classic.

Summary: Good Psycho, Good Boy!
Review: In this age of massive special effects which outshine the posing (and limited acting ability) therein, it's nice to watch a film with a message. And it's nice to see Dern as a GOOD psycho instead of just a crazed coyboy or 'burbanite. It's a classic to be sure, right up there with "Earth Stood Still", "Planet of the Apes" and others. Oh, by the way, the soundtrack by Peter Schickele and Joan Baez IS available. Doesn't hold up as well without the movie, but still decent stuff. Dern really is a good actor, although, like Meg Ryan, Dern is ALWAYS himself. And ya gotta love Huey, Dewey, and Louie. <giggling>

Summary: Is this the future?
Review: I once watched this movie and On The Beach on the same day. I don't recommend it unless you want to feel depressed. This is one of the all time classic 'warning' movies, along with Soylent Green, The Day The Earth Stood Still and On The Beach. They should be part of the school curriculum, rather that such subjects as Economics. This movie helped my understanding of the environment and its importance. I first saw the movie when I was ten and then spent twenty years trying to find the video. All I can say is it was worth it.

Summary: Still my favorite Sci Fi movie
Review: Like several reviewers, I first saw *Silent Running* as a youngster. It is one of the reasons I attempt to live a simpler lifestyle than Madison Ave.'s brainwashing. Bruce Dern's performance as the dedicated oddball who becomes a reluctant hero out of desperation and madness seems more realistic than come-to-life cartoon heros James T. Kirk or Han Solo. (Yes, I enjoyed Star Trek and Star Wars.) Are the special effects dated? Yes, but Lucas revised his Star Wars trilogy when computers could do better. As a long time admirer of Joan Baez, I wish the soundtrack was available. Some say *Silent Running's* ideology is tired, but I hope not. Apathy's consequences is the central theme of the movie.

Summary: One of the best
Review: I have to admit to seeing this film several times years apart, and every time I see it I always end up in tears, (yep you can call me a wimp if you like), but it does jerk the old heart strings, and only a couple of other movies do that to me. One being the very moving Glory with Denzel Washington and Mathew Broderick. So Iwill definately be buying myself a copy of this movie, finances permitting <g>.

Summary: A SciFi Classic that is definitely worth seeing
Review: This movie set up the droids of Star Wars. Not only is it fairly well presented but it makes you stop and think about where we are heading on a Global scale.

Review: The original R2-D2, this little guy captivated me

Summary: Most Excellent --
Review: When I first saw this film as a child, it captivated me. Even though the message is a little tired by today's standards, it was a thinking person's movie at a time when very few such films were being produced. It paints a dark, yet believable picture of the consequences of humanity's excesses. While I am no particular fan of the "save the world hippy" generation (they haven't really accomplished much in 30 years, and now they are the very establishment they despised) , this film is one of the best from the genre. I rank it right up there with Soylent Green, The Omega Man, Planet of the Apes (et al), and, of course, 2001. Bruce Dern does a believable job portraying a true rarity: a cynical intellectual who still has the ability to experience wonder. Some have said that the Joan Baez soundtrack is a bit over the top. Maybe so, but taken in context with the time that the film was made, something would be missing without them. This is a very fine film.
