Summary: Great 1st Gen Product
Review: IMHO - TIVO's a great 1st generation product. Well worth the$$. To clear up a few misconceptions:

1) Yes, TIVO does charge fortheir guide service. HOWEVER, you don't HAVE to use it to be able to record stuff in "timer mode". Also, all you need to do to get the TRUE cost is add the lifetime subscription cost to the cost of the unit or DirecTV subscribers . If you look at the total costs that way, TIVO and Replay wind up costing about the same.

2) TIVO's "suggestions" are just that - you can turn them off (in which case it will NEVER record them) or leave 'em on. If you read TIVO's privacy statement, you'll see that TIVO NEVER sends this stuff to anyone - there's no "big brother" here.

As far as actual usage goes - we've had ours about a month. The only complaint I have is that it doesn't yet show PPV channels from DirecTV in the guide (easy to work around). I use it to record all of the shows I care about on Season Passes, and then spend one nite/week as a "TV Nite" I'm actually thinking about turning suggestions back on, to let it pick up things I might have otherwise missed.

Summary: simple to use, watch what you want
Review: I've never realized how many snowboarding and skiing shows were on regular cable till I got TiVo. The machine makes coming home after work more enjoyable. I'm always anxious to see what shows are 'Now Showing' on my TiVo. So far TiVo's done an awesome job with the shows it's recorded on its own, finding me shows I never knew about, but that I enjoy. The best features are the three speed fast foward/rewind with the timeline indicator on the bottom showing you where you are in the show. The translucent live tv guide is convenient and the slow-mo button is great for sports.

This is definitely the easiest way to get 'Interactive' TV without waiting for the cable companies to roll 'em out. Also, think about it... would you rather rely on the cable network to supply you with Video On Demand, or would you rather have your own machine that gathers it for you? It's like having your own PC vs a terminal. Plus, just wait for when TiVo opens its source to programmers... think of all the endless possible hacks! you gotta admit it's getting better...better everyday!

Summary: Great product!
Review: I don't know that I've ever been this excited about a new "toy". Seriously, once you have PTV for a couple weeks you won't know how you watched TV without one. My days of channel surfing are over, because there is hours and hours of programming on TiVo I want to watch, but usually don't have time to.

I really like that TiVo records programs it thinks I might like, or knows I like, based on my thumbs up/down ratings. (Yes, this feature can be disabled, but why would you want to? It will never delete something you wanted it to record in place of a suggestion. It just fills up the free space with shows you might want to watch.) After a few weeks you will be pleasantly surprised at what gets recorded in addition to programs you've asked for.

The user interface is very easy to use, as is the remote. The remote even controls my TVs on/off and my Pioneer receiver's volume! Meaning, I only now use my Pioneer A/V remote if I need to change to a different video source.

The best thing about TiVo for me? I went out of town for a week, as I often do. Normally, I'd have to set up the VCR to record a show or two that I didn't want to miss. But, with TiVo, I came home to see ALL the shows I would normally have watched were waiting for me, and I didn't have to do a thing! I already had "Season Passes" to my favorite shows.

Everyone I've shown my TiVo to now wants one. :)

Summary: Changed the way I watch TV, revolutionary
Review: Ok, so it sounds like a digital VCR with a few bells and whistles, and very limited capacity.

But that true random access with the ability to switch around has drasticly changed the way I watch TV.

Even before TiVo I tended to tape almost everything I watched. But with TiVo this has become so painless that I find myself almost NEVER watching live TV. It's so nice to bounce around between the things I told TiVo to record and the things it thinks I'd like to watch. I can watch a piece of this, a bit of that. Skip part of this, delete that show I didn't really want to watch.

Plus with about 10 days schedule into the future, I won't miss anything when out of town for a week.

Only serious flaws are the handling of conflicting season passes and the limited storage (10 hours on medium quality). I expect the software problems to be handled in a free upgrade in the next few months, and the storage to be upgradable in the field at selected stores.

I already find it a pain to watch TV without TiVo.

Summary: Great Buy if you can cope with leading edge technology
Review: If you are happy dealing with a product that is essentially still in development then buy a Tivo. I looked at both Tivo and Replay TV and felt that Tivo had better features. The one time I have had to call customer service they were great, the 1st level support couldn't handle my problem so they transferred me to 2nd level with only a short hold time. Once the price drops and the hard disk size increases everyone will own a Tivo.

Summary: Great!
Review: Simply put: The best electronics purchase I've ever made. If I had to choose, I'd give up my DVD player & Dolby Digital receiver before my Tivo. The interface is simple (my wife picked it up easily, as well as my parents who also bought a Tivo). The suggestions are dead on, once you give it a week or so to put your thumbs-up/thumbs-down picks to use. The suggestions are OPTIONAL, turn that feature off if you don't like it. The space management is great and best of all, something you don't have to think about. The to-do list allows you to easily verify/review upcoming recordings. Probably most important, my Tivo has NEVER failed to record a show that I've told it to record.

Summary: Revolutionary Product
Review: ...TiVo is simply a first rate consumer electronicproduct. As others have attested, it has changed the way I watch TV -FOREVER!

The features are wonderful. I am watching more QUALITY TV than I ever have in my life. There is no need to watch commercials and hardly a need/nor desire to watch live TV.

When I come home every day there is a cornucopia of interesting and entertaining T.V. programs waiting for me to watch.

No more looking for tapes, remembering to set the VCR (if you can figure it out), making sure the tape is cued, remembering what shows are on what tapes, finding them later etc. etc.

If a show is recording when I come home I don't have to wait for it to end. I just watch it from the beginning as TiVo records the rest of the show and I catch up skipping commercials along the way.

Great TV that you would never have watched, you now record without a thought because it is easy and effortless. If you're a movie buff you'll finally get to see all those movies you've always wanted to see but didn't bother tracking through the TV guide at 3:30 am.

TiVo does not invade my privacy in any way. TiVo does NOT monitor me in any way that I do not explicitly want it to monitor me.

There are no "hidden" fees. The subscription fee is made known up front and if you purhase the life-time subscription the total cost comes out to the cost of a RePlay TV that doesn't charge a subscription.

Their customer service folks are very helpful and first rate. You can't go wrong buying a TiVo.

Summary: TiVo Revolutionizes TV
Review: I've owned my TiVo for a little more than three months now and have never looked back. TV will never be the same. Since this purchase I have seen several added features and improvements implemented. The greatest thing about TiVo is that since my purchase, I have not missed one recording of the shows I want to watch, and haven't had to dig for a video tape once. As for TiVo's suggestions, these get better as you rate more shows. After using TiVo for a couple of months and rating quite a few shows, I find TiVo's suggestion feature does a very good job at keeping interesting shows available at a moments notice.

In short, I Love my TiVo

Summary: I prefer Tivo to Replay TV
Review: I bought a Tivo machine....and then returned it within 30 days when I heard about the Replay TV 2020 with a larger hard drive for the same price. I then bought a Replay TV unit and have since returned it in order to buy another Tivo machine. Replay TV was not a bad unit....but I am going back to Tivo as some of the Direct TV stations I received did not show up on the Replay TV guide & therefore could not be recorded. Replay TV also would not allow me to record Direct TV pay per views (Tivo did). Tivo also allows for slow motion playback which is surprisingly convenient. Finally, Tivo also has a better interface for choosing programs to record. Tivo would be perfect if it adopted Replay TV's quick skip feature (though fast forwarding is easy enough), got rid of the useless thumbs up thumbs down feature, and added the extra 6 gigs of hard drive storage to match the 2020 machine (though I never ran out of space).
