Summary: You don't have TiVo yet?
Review: You probably heard all the hype about how great TiVo is, and how it makes watching TV easy, convenient, and fun again. Friends and coworkers might have been trying to sell you the idea of how it frees you from shackles of network television schedules. If you?re looking to find out that the hype and your friends are wrong? sorry it aint gonna happen.

The benefits of this incredible invention are too many to list without placing incredible stain on my keyboard. TiVo is quite simply the best thing that happened to TV since, well, probably cable and VCRs. It will record your shows when you are not home, recommend and record programs that seem similar to what you already watch. You can set up ?season passes? that record every episode (new only, or new and old). You can pause and rewind live TV.

Not a big electronics buff? No audiophile blood running through your veins? No problem. TiVo is probably one of the easiest pieces of home theater technology to use. From the remote to the onscreen menus, TiVo is a breeze to setup and use. Nothing to intimidate you here.

Have DirecTV with a Dual LNB dish? TiVo can record two channels at once, or you can watch one as it records another, or you can watch something it recorder previously while it records two other things?. Is your head spinning yet?

TiVo is just great.

Summary: You Must Get Tivo! Must!
Review: I'm not a huge TV watcher, but a friend was so big on this that I decided to get it when I installed a new DIRECTV system. Tivo is an absolute must-have that totally changes the way you watch TV. I'd give up color before I'd go back to TV without Tivo. One practical bit of advice -- only get it with a unified receiver, not a standalone which limits flexibility. You will see twice as much of what you like to watch without adding any time in front of the TV (although you may well spend more time and see even more). This is not a glorified VCR; it is a life-changer. My editorial can't do justice; visit a friend who has it or just trust me and you won't regret it.

Summary: ** Unsatisfied Customer **
Review: I purchased this product, and although I love the concept the TIVO has to offer I personally have had problems with bad reception! I have been on the phone with tech support, with level2 tech support, and I have gone through the returning and recieving of three different units. I have changed the cables and the connectors, I hooked up our old sat dish reciever and had no problem with reception, The last tech said " It has to be something in the environment, try an in line amp.!"We did thatand still bad reception. All I want at this point is to return the unit and get my money back since NO ONE can seem to help me.
I don't know where to go from here, I was told I can't return it for a refund it's too late, so are you gonna tell me I'm stuck with a unit I can't use?! I really hope not. I would appreciate
any guidance you can give me. Maybe even credit toward another brand. We have been messing with this problem for the last 3 months.
Thankyou
Sheri Cleary

Summary: Necessary product for home, but POOR quality and warranty
Review: I had my philips DSR 6000R for six months and loved it - I don't know how I ever lived without TIVO in my life. My partner and I are Buffy, Angel, Sopranos, Six feet under, and The Wire addicts and without TIVO we'd have to wait for everything to come on on DVD to watch them -- we love it!

That said however, the warranty and quality of this particular product is NOT WORTH YOUR HARD EARNED CONSUMER DOLLARS! Our unit simply stopped working this week (won't power on) and we come to find out that the warranty is only 90 days!!! 90 days for an electronics product? Obviously philps knows there are problems with the manufacturing. SO - in order to fix the unit, they want me to pay $$$ plus shipping and handling (both ways). Unacceptable in my opinion. I called directTV and Tivo and they were actually kind enough to offer me credit towards my account in the amount it would cost to buy a new or used direct-tv/tivo receiver. KUDOS!! TO DirectTV and TIVO for cusotmer serivce, but shame on philips. I'm certainly NOT buying another philips receiver as a result of this. Maybe I'll find the same thing with the other brands, but I've a feeling SONY at least handles the customer support side of things a little smoother!

PS -- Also had problems with my Philips universal remote recently and had similar problems with their repairs dept. I think its simply Philips does not know how to run a customer care center. But thats' just my H[onest]O[pinion].

Summary: Keep your fingers crosses!
Review: The Philips, Sony and Hughes TIVO DTV receivers were all being built by the same outfit in Mexico. After misleading all three vendors for weeks -- about backordering product -- they finally admitted they've given up on the product. Mostly because of their own lousy quality control. I have had three of the Hughes version in the past seven months. Currently waiting for number four!

All three "manufacturers" are apparently repairing returned units to cover their warranty obligations. Hughes has taken as long as two months to get the TIVO unit back to me -- giving me a non-TIVO loaner in the meanwhile.

Saying all that, I love the damned thing when it's up and running. My hope is that all or one of the big three will get it together and come up with satisfactory manufacture and quality control. And, hopefully, my next remanufactured unit will last more than some minimal amount of time.

Summary: This product is unreliable!!!
Review: I purchased this unit because my brother raved about it. However, after using this product for three months with no problems, it began to malfunction. The unit was caught in an infinite loop of re-booting. I called Philips for assistance and they instructed me to ship the product to them and they would have it up and running in two weeks. After four weeks, I finally received the receiver back from Philips. It worked fine for 24 hours. However, I woke up this morning to watch the Tour de France only to be greeted with another fit of re-booting. This product, or at least my unit, is WORTHLESS! My brother now also has the same problem with his unit... 7/19/02: I just received my third unit from Philips this week through their replacement and repair program. The Tivo portion seems to work fine, but the unit is now overheating. I elevated the unit off of the shelf it is on and have a fan blowing on it all day to try to solve the problem. I will NEVER purchase another Philips product again!!!

Summary: Is TiVo the next Betamax ?
Review: I've always recognized the potential of a product like this, but it was my wife who really began to use it "full time." Now we can't watch TV without it, because of the convenience of pausing a good show every time the kids run into the room and interrupt the show we are watching. You never miss that great line at the climax of the show...just rewind it, and listen to it again. So what is the problem??? After falling in love with the TiVo technology, our Philips TiVo unit broke. I thought, no problem, I'll buy a new unit, send the broken one off to be repaired, and when it comes back, I'll have 2 units. I went to Circuit City where I bought this unit, and they don't carry any TiVo products anymore. Ok, I thought, I'll pick one up somewhere else......no way. There are no more retailers carrying TiVo. TiVo's website only recommends 2 online retailers, (no local retailers). They are selling reconditioned units for 3 times the price I paid for mine new. So, I don't know what is going on with TiVo, but they may be on the way out. So now I am reluctantly converting over to Ultimate TV, as it is the only service supported by local vendors. Good Luck

Summary: Excellent unit - changes the way I watch TV
Review: I've had a DSR6000 for over a year now, and am very satisfied. Originally I bought a TiVo just to act as a digital VCR, but thats not how I ended using it.

Now I no longer think about when programs are on, but instead just instruct the TiVo to set up a recording whenever I hear of something new or interesting. For example, a friend started getting into Rally Racing, so I set up a wishlist for Rally, and in a few days had a bunch of races recorded for him.

Image quality is excellent, and now that DirectTV has local channels for most markets, I don't have to ever worry about programs that are Over-The-Air only...

My unit has been problem-free, though there have been a small but significant number of problems with the modem on all TiVo units. It appears they're susceptible to spikes on the lines, so if you don't pull your phones during electrical storms or have very crappy wiring in your builidng, you might have problems. I'd recommend seriously considering a surge supressor on the phone line to prevent problems.
