Summary: Basic Yoga For Dummies / Sara Ivanhoe
Review: I found this DVD to be extremely useful and informative. After having been a yoga practitioner in my youth, I decided to return to yoga at my retirement and found this to be an excellent and well presented program.

I recommend the Yoga For Dummies series with Sara Ivanhoe to anyone starting, or re-starting yoga exercise, as well as the experienced yogi.

Summary: Finally, a Yoga DVD I'm not turned-off by!
Review: Normally I can't stand Yoga DVDs because they have that hokey serene music and the instructors are way too New Age for me. This Yoga DVD is ideal in my opinion because you can relate to the instructor, she makes you feel comfortable and describes the movements well. She's not on the beach in Jamaica, but her environment is just right. I highly recommend this Yoga DVD to newbies like myself.

Summary: Great Yoga Video for Beginners
Review: I was very satisfied with this video. It was my first try at Yoga. Sara Ivanhoe did a great job of explaining the correct form of each position and kept reminding the viewer to breathe, which if very important to get the full benefit of Yoga. She has a calming, soothing voice that encourages relaxation. Because of this video, I signed up for a Yoga class and have also bought another video by Ms. Ivanhoe.

The only thing I have a complaint for was that after watching the video only a couple of times, I was ready for a faster pace video that didn't have as much explaination. But, I think the positives outweigh this one negative. I mean, you have to have a good basis to learn things from, right?

Summary: Suprisingly Good!
Review: I have been doing Yoga for about 3 months now and have had incredible results. I have been mainly using Bryan Kest's Power Yoga series.

I wanted to get my sister involved, but felt Bryan may be too fast and aggressive for her.

I could not believe how good this video is!

Also, the host is very pleasing to the eye. I would love to take a class with her - I wouldn't take my eyes off her. (yes, I am a guy).

Get this if you want an introduction to Yoga and learn about basic poses.

I really couldn't believe it when she explained Namaste! Good background learning here as well.

Summary: A good start
Review: I checked this DVD out from the local library, and am glad that I did. It offers a good introduction to the subject and is easy to follow. I would not, however, recommend buying it. The lengthy explanations--so helpful the first time around--rapidly become tedious. It doesn't strike me as something I would want to hang on to.

Summary: Excellent for beginners!
Review: I wanted to gain flexibility and had heard yoga can be beneficial. I ordered Basic Yoga for Dummies, and think it is fabulous. I was concerned about doing the excercises properly without the aid of an instructor. This video provides step-by-step instruction explaining and illustrating the correct spinal alignment for each pose. It also explains where you should be feeling the stretch. The video is user friendly and has made me feel confident about practicing yoga. I have found the poses are harder than they look! I was actually sore the next day. I will continue working with this video over the next couple months, and will then try Beyond Basic Yoga for Dummies! I definitely recommend Basic Yoga for Dummies for any beginner!

Summary: Perfect do it yourself Yoga!
Review: I bought this after trying 5 other yoga videos/dvds. Not only does this spell it out for your very simply, it makes it easy. I love doing this tape. I honestly only do the yoga with the DvD once a week. The rest of the week I use the list in the Dvd case and do the positions myself. Included on the Dvd is the beginner 12 yoga positions and the intermeddiate yoga. I am not that far along yet, but I have already bought this Dvd for friends. I HIGHLY reccomend this Dvd.

Summary: Wonderful for a True Beginner; Helpful Review for Others
Review: Having purchased various videos and attended numerous yoga classes for "beginners" that move too fast and explain too little, I was delighted with this one. Yoga is not a race. Doing the asanas quickly does not mean doing them correctly. Although I am not a beginner, I wanted a chance to really study the poses and to make sure that I am doing them correctly.
My husband, who is muscle bound from athletics, started refusing to attend classes with me at our health club because he didn't find the classes for beginners being conducted as if they were being taught to beginners. Repeatedly, I see people who wish to move on who haven't nailed down the basics. This is a chance to really nail down the basics.

Summary: Particularly recommended for belly dancers
Review: I would have given the video 5 stars except for the fact that it moves too slowly to be used regularly as a yoga workout (as the title implies). Judging from other reviews, the DVD edition takes care of this problem by including a more concise run-through of the poses.

I think it's important to point out that if something is "basic" or "simple", that does NOT imply that it is "easy". Walking is simple, but it takes years to do it smoothly and without falling down. Writing is simple, but it takes years to develop the dexterity to do it neatly. I will reserve judgment on the efficacy as an overall workout until I have a chance to take a private lesson with a local instructor to make absolutely sure that I am doing it right.

Here is the impact this video has had on my dancing: my back feels fantastic after I follow the workout on the video, and I stand straighter without even trying. Mountain and Tree are two great poses to learn to take seriously if you want to work on your grounding and balance. Even when I do not follow the video, I practice 10 of the 12 poses (or a variation) regularly because they really help. I have to add extra hip-openers, but since this tape was not geared towards a dancer's needs, I can hardly complain about that.

All standard disclaimers apply: no video is a substitute for a live instructor, so if you're not good at watching yourself, you might do something wrong. No one with injuries or medical issues should attempt this or any other video without asking their doctor or PT whether certain motions could aggrevate their condition.

The workout is mostly stretching: there is some strengthening, but it is not at all aerobic. I know there are several different styles of yoga, and I was not sure whether this tape followed any particular tradition. It is not for everybody, but it was everything I wanted it to be.
