Rating: Summary: Matt Damon and Robin Williams, at thier best! Review: "GOOD WILL HUNTING" is a brilliant uplifting movie about a guy, Will Hunting(Matt Damon), who is smarter than anyone in the nearby college and could easily get a diploma. Two problems, he doesn't like to show his intellegence, and he doesn't attend the college, he cleans its floors. But soon, Will is seeked out by a college professer, who bails him out of assault charges on two conditions: 1. Will must have math sessions with the professer 2. He must see a sichiatrist once a week. Will goes through 5 of the sichiatrists before he meets Sean(Robin Williams). After 3 or 4 sessions they become close and share thier pasts and thoughts. Then suddenly, Sean and the professer have a violent argument. The professer thinks Will should seek a career in Math, but Sean thinks they should let him choose. All the meanwhile, you're informed of his life outside these happenings. What's great is that everytime he goes out with his friends(Ben Affleck is one of them)or his girlfriend(Minnie Driver), the scenes are fairly well-written, because in other movies, these scenes get to the point as fast as they, this movie is NOT slow, but it does an amazing job in taking its own sweet time.I think that "GOOD WILL HUNTING" is a beautifully made drama with 5 star acting(I still think Matt Damon and Minnie Driver deserved Oscars)and plot. An excellent buy. I would reccomend this to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Vulnerability at its human best Review: The power of the vulnerability of a human life is starkly evident! To open oneself up to another life is a dangerous and spiritual experience. The most beautiful portrayal of brokeness. This is my favourite film!
Rating: Summary: This movie is beutifal! Review: This movie is so cool...Matt Damon is good actor and sexy. I like when he hit that other guy in the face! He is soo cool. aND HE CUSSEes alot!! That was funny. I like how he beat people up and he was so smarter then everybody else and he looks cool. ... This movie has an important message about being smart and cool and I love it because it rules. Gus Van Zant is the greatest directer EVER, becuase he made PsYCHO too!
Rating: Summary: Excellent direction, strong Damon performance Review: Gus van Sant does a very nice job keeping this movie moving along briskly, something that might not be especially easy given the subject matter. Matt Damon plays Will Hunting, a natural genius with close to perfect recall, who has various relationship issues, and an unpleasant family history. Robin Williams plays Hunting's somewhat unwilling therapist with issues of his own, which Hunting expertly locates and triggers. The chemistry between Williams and Damon *works* - the various power plays and tests seem very real, and felt deeply by both actors. The friendship between Ben Afleck and Damon is easy and familiar, which isn't surprising given that they grew up together. Damon and Minnie Driver don't have quite the right electricity between them, but Driver does an excellent job of portraying the slightly eccentric Skylar. Van Sant's direction is outstanding, and resembles his work in "My Own Private Idaho" in bits, but has a maturity not as well-developed ten years ago. Overall, a very good movie with powerful performances given unflinchingly.
Rating: Summary: Like Beautiful Music on a Slightly Scratched CD Review: Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is a tough kid from south Boston, who is prone to fighting and not being able to open up in his romantic relationships. He's also extremely bright and a mathematical genius. He gets a janitor's job at MIT and, while cleaning at night, he solves nearly-unsolvable problems left by professors as challenges to their students. He eventually gets "caught" by a professor, who insists he cannot waste his gift. Will is sent to therapist Robin Williams to smooth out his rough edges and learn to deal with his anger. But, is any of this what Will wants? What does it mean for his friendships with other tough, blue-collar guys he grew up with (including script co-writer Ben Affleck and Ben's brother Casey Affleck)? And, can he open up enough to hold on to his blooming romance with college-student Minnie Driver? There is an excellent story here, with lots of reality and realistic hope and optimism. The acting is also perfect. However, some of the profanity seems gratuitous and becomes grating after a while. Early on, it drives home the point that Will is angry, raised in a troubled home and neighborhood, etc. Eventually, it becomes over-kill, in my opinion. The ending seems to lay the groundwork for a sequel, but they did not do one. I LIKE THAT! Not every good movie has to breed sequels. Not every loose end needs to be tied up. People can use their imaginations occasionally. Some feel that Will Hunting's variety of mathematical genius seems unrealistic. While it is true that many of history's great mathematicians were craftsmen who spent decades of hard work creating their genius, it is also true that there are people like Will Hunting. They look at complex math problems that are Greek to me (and actually are Greek at times) and see the concepts as clearly as Rodin saw his sculptures in the yet-untouched stone, the way Hemingway or Steinbeck took simple phrases and stories and imbued them with power and meaning, or the way Beethoven took musical notes he could no longer hear and turned them to soaring symphonies. I knew a guy like this in high school; math wasn't his second language - it was his first language.
Rating: Summary: A Very Moving Story Review: I must say that Matt Damon got robbed for the Best Actor award. He gave his best performance ever in this film, a long with Robin Williams, and Minni Driver. With incredible performances by this wonderful cast, a great script, and a well done score...you cannot go wrong with this film. Good Will Hunting deserved the Best Picture award, instead of Titanic. That's the Academy for you...
Rating: Summary: A good story with some nice observation Review: The lead, Matt Damon is superb in a role he co-wrote with Ben Affleck (acting in a smaller part) and brings home a lot of the irony of being extremely gifted. Surrounded by opportunities, Will feels unable to take any of them for one reason or another and gets 'stuck' as a janitor in a prestigious American college. Everyone ducks when they see Robin Williams with a beard - he's going to be 'sensitive' is he? Well you will be pleased to know he only goes over the top once or twice here and the rest is a fine performance. Top marks to director Gus Van Sant for that. The film scores where it dares to be different, and conversely, its weakness is where it has to be like other films. There was no need to give Will a girlfriend, except perhaps to give a contrast to his male relationships. It seems unlikely that Minnie Driver's character would have been attracted to him, she would be more likely to tell him off for using long words. But this is a minor niggle, and Driver herself is a good ingredient in the film, even if her character is superfluous to the film's story. All in all, this is worth watching because Damon and Affleck are doing something different, and, 90% of the time, they achieve it admirably.
Rating: Summary: Forever A Classic In My Eyes Review: I've watched this movie more than any other in my collection and am awestricken every time. Profound acting, immaculate cinematography, and undeniably brilliant dialogue leaves me with only one word to describe the film - incredible. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, the screenwriters for Good Will Hunting, are clearly WAY beyond their respective years in wisdom and perceptiveness. They wrote a story that I consider to be one of the most insightful and thought-provoking ever told. Robin Williams also helped out immensely with his acting role, quite often putting a grin on your face with his witty dialogue, then, seconds later, abruptly slapping that grin away with heartfelt earnesty. Minnie Driver played an excellent part as well, giving the audience a veritable view of what it feels like be in love with someone who doesn't love you back. In conclusion, if you want a flick that makes you think, laugh, and cry all at once, then do yourself a favor and BUY THIS MOVIE! And to all the holy whiners: Yes, there are a fair amount of cuss words in the film, but c'mon: Pay a visit to reality land, will ya'? I definitely do NOT expect four ruffians from South Boston to say "golly gee" all the time, do you? I'm sorry if it hurts your little virgin ears, but "Good Will Hunting" is a true-to-life movie, and the vulgarity that you so despise simply adds to the genuineness of the story. So HOW DO YA LIKE THEM APPLES?!
Rating: Summary: Greatest movie ever? Very possible Review: I have to admit...I've seen hundreds of movies. Maybe a thousand or so. This is probably one of the only movies that is so good that it gives me chills. The performances are flawless and there's one scene in particular that sets it apart: "Oh, I don't know that? Let me tell you what I do know. Every day I come by to pick you up, we have a few drinks, and a few laughs and it's great. But you know what the best part of my day is? It's for about ten seconds from when I pull up to the curb to when I get to your door. Because I think maybe I'll get up there and I'll knock on the door and you won't be there. No goodbye, no see you later, no nothin'. Just left. I don't know much, but I know that." Absolutely amazing!
Rating: Summary: "How ya like THEM apples?" Review: Here's the film that put Matt Damon and Ben Affleck on the map, and it's just as good as it was when it was first relased back in 1997. Damon is Will Hunting, a teen janitor who spends his free time getting into all sorts of trouble and hanging out with his sidekick (Affleck). When he's forced to attend sessions with a mentor (Robin Williams), it's revealed that he's a prodigy and is able to solve math equations that even the most prestigious professors at MIT struggle to grasp. Meanwhile, he crosses paths with a Harvard girl (Minnie Driver), and...well, that's all I'll say for now. Although Gus Van Sant directed the film, "Good Will Hunting's" backbone is the screenplay, wittily written by Affleck and Damon. If you haven't seen this movie, rent it. If you already seen it, then grab the DVD and treat yourself to the weath of features, including a good commentary, a featurette, and other stuff. Highly recommended.
