 Description:
The exuberantly in-your-face attitude of this video is established at the beginning as Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura appears to bellow, "You better watch it!" Yes sir, governor! Hosted by Minnesota Timberwolves star Kevin Garnett and legendary music producer Jimmy Jam, NBA Live 2001 is a collection of music videos intercut with footage of NBA stars in action. The acrobatics on the court fit well with the percussive music from such acts as the Beastie Boys, De La Soul, and the Mighty, Mighty Bosstones. Some vintage clips of NBA greats, including Larry Bird, Jerry West, and Bill Russell, are respectfully assembled and accompanied by Mary K. Blige's "Everything." Garnett and Jimmy Jam appear in brief clips between the videos, and the motif of young men casually hanging out in wildly luxurious surroundings will look familiar to anyone with even a glancing acquaintance with rap videos. There's even a side trip to Minnesota's governor's mansion, where Governor Ventura meets the fellows and introduces a clip. This is a lively melding of two modern American art forms, dazzling basketball action and cutting-edge music videos. --Robert J. McNamara
