Summary: Tivo, great if it worked!
Review: 10/30/03

My Philips TiVo 20 hour Tivo was working great for about four or five hours until the hard drive started acting up. Now the Hard drive seems to be messed up some how and all I can see now is a bunch of lines and blank screen. Now I have to go through the trouble of getting it fixed. This SUCKS because I just spent $150.00 for it and now the stupid thing won't work!

Summary: The device that has made the biggest impact on my life!
Review: I am what my friends call a electronic toy junkie. Buy them all try them all. But, TIVO has more dramtaically changed my TV viewing habits than anything else to hit the market since my first VCR over 25 years ago. This device does what the VCR is suppossed to do without the hassles, time, frustration. Now, I can devote an evening a week to watch my four or five favorite shows from different networks and different days and times.

TIVO is essentially a smart VCR that records digitally--and with the subscription service, tracks programs times, length, and even records programs it thinks you might like (based on viewing behavior and ratings you provide). The amount of time depends on quality of recording (like EP vs. LP on the VCR). However, the hard drives are expandable through independent companies. Had mine nine months, loved it. Expanded the amount of recording time by adding another hard drive. (Easily done with after market kits available on the web). Will be my Christmas present to many members of my family this year!

Summary: Great Idea - Defective Hardware
Review: I just got my HDR212 a few days ago, and I love would it says it can do. The only problem is, it crashes each time it starts recording. The problem is not addressed on either the Tivo or Philips website, and technical support is only open during regular business hours.

Summary: When it works
Review: I love the concept of the product. It's great when it works. Today, I'm sending it in because they say the hard drive needs to be replaced. I don't know if I will send it in. The exchange price is almost the cost of a new one. Funny how it waited one month after the warrenty was up. This one is really the fourth one that I've had. The first three didn't work out of the box. In order to get this one, I had a very patient Best Buy employee go through their stock until we found one that did work. In the end, there was only one left on the shelf.

Summary: Compared Replay and Tivo.....
Review: I recently bought a 20 hour Tivo and liked it, but I didn't like the fact I had to pay so much to get lifetime service, so I returned it and opted to go with a replay because it was a bit cheaper and I didn't have to pay for the service. I thought it would be a good move, but boy was I wrong. First of all, if you only have a CO/EX cable on the back of your TV like I do, you will have to buy a seperate RF modulator to correct the problem. Cost me an additional ... to get that which actually made the price difference about even. Secondly I had a whale of time learning all the remote keys. It seems like they just made them all the same size and stuck them on there, I had to look down to make sure I pushed the right button. Also I did not appreciate the fact of the gauranteeing and non-gauranteeing shows. The way I watch television, I have a lot of favorite shows that are on all different times of the day and the schedule is constantly changing. I didn't appreciate that in order to record every episode of my favorite show at all times I had to type in keywords instead of the actual title and I found out that if 2 shows gauranteed to record conflict with each other it will pick the first one you gauranteed to record. Let's say you gauranteed a new series premiere of Friends to record and Ally Macbeal as well, but by some wierd reason it is a rerun. If you gauranteed to record Ally Macbeal first, it will pick that one and you will miss your series premiere. If you don't gaurantee 2 shows to record, let's just say those same 2 shows again, it will pick the one in alphabetical order. So once again, the rerun of Ally Macbeal will record instead of your long anticipated season premiere of Friends. Also if you gaurantee a certain show to record, it will set aside an additional half hour or hour (depending on the show's duration) which really cuts on your disk space quickly. You have to constantly monitor your space to make sure you have enough room. With Tivo, first of all with the new software 2.0, you can choose when 2 shows conflict which one to record, even if both shows are season passes. It will tell you OK, we'll record all these shows of this season pass but we won't record this show because it conflicts with this other show that is a higher priority on the season pass manager (another great Tivo feature!) and it will let you say OK to it or record the show you wanted to record originally over the other show that was a higher priority on the manager. Needless to say I returned my Replay and got my Tivo back and am sticking with it. I like the software a lot better and my TV watching experience is so much better now than it was before. Now I always have something to watch whenever I want and at my convenience...

Summary: It will change the way you watch TV!
Review: I recently got this Tivo after months of reviewing the product and listening to other users rave about this product. It is probably one of the best electronic products I have ever purchased. It is simple to use and a great convenience. You just tell it the show you like and it records away. I never watch live television anymore, because my Tivo always has shows I want to watch waiting for me. It is great to fast forward past commercials, rewind to see something again, or pause to answer the telephone. If you need more recording time, there are options available on the internet to upgrade. I upgraded my Tivo from 20 hours to 198+ hours!

Summary: This is the pefect Tivo to UPGRADE... yes upgrade!!
Review: I started out about a year or so ago with a 14 hour Tivo unit and LOVED it. The problem was they lie about capacity... sort of. 14 hours or in the case of the 30 hour unit are really more like 6 hours and 11 hours with the recorder set to record at BEST quality... anything lower and the picture looks bad. I then paid Tivo to send me a new unit that had been upgraded to 30 hours.... Then that was still not enough time with the system set at best quality.

I finally found out I could upgrade the thing myself... so my recomendation is to get the cheapest on that you can and upgrade it. This VOIDS you tivo warrenty but hey we all like to live on the edge right :)

I now have a 117 hour Tivo because the company I used to upgrade my Tivo ... added an 80GB disk and now instead of having to delete my recordings early or being more picky about what I record I can go nuts and record anything and everything. I even saw on one website ... a guy who has a 151+ hour Tivo.

... They have parts for sale and directions on how to upgrade your Tivo (The easiest is a 14 hour unit since you just add a "blessed" drive)

happy Tivoing...!

PS If you can't tell I love this thing!
