Summary: What an odd choice for Criterion
Review: If you have a DVD collection and some interesting friends, you should have this original. No run of the mill Hollywood production crap here. I loved this movie and couldn't stop singing (and laughing as I sang) the theme song.

Summary: Compellingly weird...or weirdly compelling...
Review: If you're looking for a good old fishing vid, this is not it. Rather, it's a series of short films in which John Lurie and a friend (Tom Waits, Jim Jarmusch, Dennis Hopper, Willem Dafoe) go fishing and manage to do everything but catch fish. It's a brilliant series that's probably not going to appeal to anyone who lacks a sense of play.

Summary: Rent it first
Review: It is a interesting DVD to watch once. If you love fishing and that's the main reason you bough this dvd, you will probably be disappointed. Rent it first befor buying it.

Summary: fishing... with john.
Review: It's real men doing real things. What's better than that?

Summary: "For the shark, Man is on his menu"
Review: The fishing show America has been waiting for. The Lurie commentary is just as funny as the extremely weird dialogue going on between the fisherman. The man doing the voice overs may be the best part of the DVD. Very funny stuff, but viewers have to bring their brains. Ice fishing with Willem Dafoe is beyond hilarious.

Summary: THIS IS THE FISHING I'M TALKING ABOUT
Review: This DVD demonstarates why Criterion is on top of their game. Who the hell is John Lurie? The man we are not suppose to know as MARVIN PONTIAC is an accomplished composer and actor who hides very well in the shadows of modesty. Making it to two DVDs on Criterion (FISHING WITH JOHN and LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST), I can only hope STRANGER THAN PARADISE is on the way to Criterion's consideration list. What you can assume from owning FISHING WITH JOHN....A: If you know how to catch fish, you may not want to watch this 7 days before you leave on a trip B: If this series makes you want to go fishing, bring someone skilled to help you...and C: When you are ready for a great laugh watching the most unlikely actors in the outdoors unconcerned of survival, throw the disc in and put your feet up. Before this, I could not imagine Jim Jarmusch fishing, not even remotely. DeFoe's episode really stands out as my favorite, Dillon's the least...but you be the judge. Luris's audio commentary is like watching another six shows. My observation is not a whole lot of people own this, so out of print may be in it's future due to it's obscurity.

Summary: Life is beautiful, for some more than others.
Review: This DVD is the next best thing to fishing.
At first that was all I had to say. I was precived as unhelp. I want to help so ...
Fishing with John is like going fishing with your best pal. After about 6 to 8 hours on the boat fishing with John you would just like to choke him . Then when you get home from the trip you look back and say... "I will never fo fishing with that man again. On the other hand I would love to go fishing with Hopper who is a mad poet. Love to fish with Tom Waits and the part where he singing as they row a boat is the best part of the trip until John spoils the moment yelling at Tom to "Row!" Hey if there is still any doubt in your mind this DVD is from the Criterion Collection...Nuff Said

Summary: Get the golden retriever off me
Review: This is the kind of movie where you totally relax with the dog draped over your reclining body. It's about the true essence of fishing - not about how to do it, but how your soul responds to the experience. It's particularly good if you have no clue how to fish.

Best experienced with a bottle of scotch, a golden retriever, and a soul mate.
