Summary: Didn't even last 9 months
Review: Bought the unit in May 2002, it started acting up in November 2002 and suddenly would not stop playing or turn off in December 2002. Finally had to pull the plug to get it to shut off. Now it has a library video stuck inside.

Summary: No Progressive Scan technology.
Review: Do not buy a DVD-player without progressive scan; most TV-makers are switching to exclusively making digital TVs and it is a must have feature. Unless you just want this for an year and then will upgrade to a progressive scan DVD player.

Summary: Think twice before you buy this combo!
Review: Eight months after purchasing this combo, the vhs side quit showing a picture. I took it to the service center where they charged... just to look at it... The warranty is 3 months parts and labor and 1 year parts. It is a worthless warranty. Don't buy this unless you plan to buy another one in less than a year!

Summary: ITS A COMBO
Review: First off being a combo unit it saves alot of shelf space and thats good. The dvd player is a very good unit. The pictures are bright and clear and colors seem very prominet-like film. The sound from the dvd player is equally good. All the subtle noies and loud moments come through clear. One problem though, on layer changes the player pauses a good 3 to 4 seconds. Although on Jurassic Park 3 I noticed nothing at all. It may depend on the disc so, its not a deal breaker for me. No digitizing occured during playback either. It has optical and coax outputs for DD and DTS sountracks. Also, "s" video, composite. and componet outputs. The vcr is like all vcr's today with all the basic functions. It does rewind very fast though, and it records unusally well in SLP mode. The playback of rental tapes and some of my own were ouite respectable. Not a bad vcr. With music cd's I was a little surprized. It sounded quite clear and of good quality to me on various types of music. One note though, the bass was very prominet. This may be because Im using the optical output for cd's for the first time and adjustments were needed in my receiver settings. So thats it . Quite a good little deal if you ask me. With exception of the layer changes and a poorly laid out instruction manual, the SD-V280 is a good deal.

Summary: CONSUMER REPORTS WINNER
Review: I am not sure what the other reviewers are talking about. My unit has worked excellent since purchased. I consider myself somewhat of a DVD junkie and Toshiba has ALWAYS outperformed the competition regarding DVD players. As far as the VCR, I really do not use it much anymore but, it is there if I need to play an old movie from my library.

Summary: SUPER EASY TO HOOK UP!!
Review: I am not too electronic savy but I had this out of the box and hooked up playing a dvd in less that five minutes. The picture is great, it looks great....I just love it!!

Summary: Solid and quiet
Review: I bought the SDV280 after returning a similar competing product (reviewed elsewhere). I can't comment on reliability, but so far I'm pleased with the DVD playback quality. The disc drive is quiet and the tray has a good, solid feeling when it comes scooting out. The remote is very responsive and has separate pairs of buttons for FF/Rew and Skip Forward/Back. As others have pointed out, however, it is not a universal remote.

One gotcha with this unit, as with other combos, is that it does not necessarily free up an input on your TV. If you use just the RCA connections, you can play both DVD and VCR on one input (the Toshiba does the necessary switching), but if you use S-Video for the DVD, you need to plug the VCR into the second set of RCA jacks; it won't play on the first. That's the case with my TV anyway, and it means threading the VCR cables around to the front of the TV, which is not completely satisfactory.

Summary: Worst Electronic Item I Ever Bought - Complete Junk
Review: I bought this thing for our bedroom, so my wife and I could watch both kinds of media on the TV and listen to the occasional CD, or plant our kids in there so they can watch a Disney DVD while we do something else around the house. What a piece of junk! Within a couple of months the remote stopped working, new batteries didn't help. I bought a replacement remote; still no joy. It turns out the sensor on the unit (not the remote) stopped receiving the signal. That's especially bad on this unit since there's no control on the unit that lets you get to the menu on a DVD (big problem with most Disney videos). This unit is worthless. I junked it and bought a Sony combo instead - that one works great. No more Toshiba for me, ever.

Summary: Is it a good machine?
Review: I don't know this machine. Why do I have to write a review in order to read other reviews? I want information before I decide to purchase. This makes no sense.
