Summary: My complaints seem trivial ...
Review: ... compared to the awful reviews it's gotten here on quality and durability. I fully expect mine to break and I just hope it does within 30 days so that Best Buy will make good on it.

1. The 90/90 warranty speaks for itself. Best Buy's price ticket on the display model indicated 30/1yr which is bad enough and obviously false.

2. The machine is not stereo if you simply use the easy Ant.In and TV-Out wire. Turns out that gives you monaural. If you buy a triple wire for AudioLeft, AudioRight and Video. Then you get stereo. However, if you want to record something while you're watching a different program, you also have to have the monaural video out wire. So ... if you thought you might enjoy life without an A-B switch, you won't.

3. My 3 year-old JVC VCR still works fine, the reason I bought this one. But, they not only "dumbed it down" as others here have said, but there's no Channel 3/4 output switch. That's set manually in the firmware and is lost in a power outage. Certainly not a good feature for an older person who has trouble with electronics items to begin with.

4. JVC even cheapened the owner's manual. My older JVC's was bound like a book. This one is a huge foldout, exactly like a road map. It's a pain finding your way from one page to the next and will eventually fray and fall apart like road maps do. From what I've read here that's probably not going to happen since the map will likely outlast the machine.

Why did I give this 3-stars? Mine is 12 hours old and didn't break yet. Also it was manufactured more recently than many of the others criticized here, so I can at least hope against hope it won't break. Am really sorry I didn't scout the reviews here first.

Summary: JVC should recall this VCR
Review: 1. To record you have to hit play and record like the very old VCRs. It didn't explain this in great detail in the user manual.

2. Finding out to setup AUX was also a pain.

3. Programming the VCR to record a show is ridiculously hard. Instead of selecting start time and entering in the numbers on the remote you basically have to scroll to the correct time. Also after I succesfully completed the programing I didn't realize I had to hit the timer option and my show did not record. Come on JVC, most VCRs you just finish the programing and then once you close the menu the timer is automatically on.

Conclusion: After two days of owning this product I returned it to my place of purchase. It felt like I was in a time warp and this was a VCR from the 80s. I was just suprised it wasn't a Betamax!

Summary: This VCR lasted 4 months...120 days.
Review: I bought the JVC HR-J692 VCR in March 2004 to replace an older model that had died after six years of faithful service. Four months later...my new VCR is dead. I just got off the phone with the warranty service center and learned that the labor cost to fix the VCR will be roughly $200. Now I know why JVC only offers a 90 day warranty on labor. I asked the service center to return the dead VCR to me so that I can use it for target practice. Based on the other ratings that I have read on this model, I would think carefully before buying this product.

Summary: Buyer beware!!
Review: I bought this JVC model mostly because it was practically priced. When I got it home, however, I discovered that there was only one jack in the back. I was still willing to give it a chance when a tape got stuck inside after only having used it twice. After ruining about three tapes, I finally exchanged it for the same model. The very first tape that I put in got stuck and it has since eaten three more tapes. This has been a very disappointing and annoying purchase. I don't have a great deal of experience with JVC products and I can say now that I never will. The whole experience has been a gigantic waste of money and time!! Buyer beware

Summary: Great expectations
Review: I bought this VCR as a replacement for an 8 yr-old RCA that was starting to have problems with playback. The price was right and the JVC brand had a good reputation as far as I knew. Despite the good to excellent video recording quality, I have to give this product two stars and I'm returning it for the following reasons.

- The sound from recorded shows is very tinny, to the point of being distracting.

- The fast forward and rewind functions display static over most of the video, making it hard to see when the commercial ends and the show begins so you often wind up going too far forward or back.

- The pause has the same video problem as fast forward. It just doesn't show a clear picture.

- For most functions, the VCR has no feedback of the current status on the LED display. All status information is displayed on-screen, which means you don't know what operation is currently selected unless the TV/VCR mode is switched in.

- The timer programming interface is fairly easy to use but makes it unnecessarily slow to set up the programs. I could program my old RCA in a quarter of the time.

Unfortunately I just can't recommend this product.

Summary: Would not recommend
Review: I bought this VCR based on the price and reputation of JVC. I had a Panasonic for 12 years and assumed JVC would be of equivalent value. Wrong! The timer used to record programs is non-functional after 8 months of ownership. To record programs, you have to manually press play and have it set on the channel you want to record. Repairs/replacement through the JVC website suggests this model retails at $119 so I did not pursue repairing it. This is not a value for the price.

Summary: Biggest waste of my money
Review: I decided for the holidays to get a new VCR and because I have video game equipment and a DVD player I thought this would be the perfect fit. Let me just say this IT WASN'T! The size didn't bother me. However, what bothers me is that unlike my Sony that I replaced with this JVC it only has one line that plays DVD/Video games instead of the 2 my other VCR had.

My main problem is the programing aspect, you have to hit too many buttons in order to just set the thing and guess what you have to remember to hit the TIMER button in order for it to record the program you just took the time to set. So if you forget you are just out of luck.

THIS SHOULD STRICTLY be sold as a Video player, the rest of the thing is such a pain it made me want to scream. I normally am the one person everyone calls for the VCR program/hook up/etc and this VCR left me wishing I'd spent the money on books instead of a VCR.

I'll repeat so you know THIS IS THE WORST WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY I have ever bought and I've bought some stupid stuff in my time.
