Description:

Does reading a large manual simply to stop that annoying VCR clock from blinking "12:00" scare you? If so, you're not alone. We found salvation in the simplicity of the Toshiba M685 VCR, which contains a unique self-setting clock feature. Once connected to your local broadcast signal, the VCR can read a data stream in your signal that automatically sets the clock display.

Of course, this 4-head VCR does more than tell the time. The M685 displays a picture as sharp as other midpriced VCR models. Impatient viewers will appreciate the unusually quick fast-forward and rewind, which work at about 150 times the speed of real-time viewing. While some units tend to be fairly noisy during the fast-forward and rewind process, the M685 is exceptionally silent.

Still, the greatest strength of the M685 is in its simplicity. This model integrates VCR Plus with C3 programming, which allows you to record your favorite programming with relative ease. To use the feature, you enter in a PlusCode for your desired program. These are the numbers found printed within TV Guide's program listings. Cable and Direct Satellite System (DSS) users will appreciate the remote control, which is compatible with most cable and DSS set-top boxes. Other significant features include automatic digital tracking and front-panel audio-video input. In addition, the unit's on-screen setup guide supports multiple languages (English, Spanish, and French).

Pros:

  • Simple clock-setting and programming features
  • Compatible with most cable and DSS set-top boxes
  • Good quality audio and video

Cons:

  • No frame-advance or slow-motion feature
