Description:

Designed for the family on the go, Memorex's aptly named Roadrunner is a nifty mobile videocassette playback system designed to fit snuggly against the backseat of just about any car--facing passengers in the back seat, of course! Its compact size, light weight (just 18 pounds), and fully self-contained components make the Roadrunner as easy to install as it is to remove, while an optional power adapter lets your family enjoy videotapes and games in the car, at home, or in a hotel room.

Roadrunner's black, sculpted-plastic body houses an adjustable 5-inch LCD (liquid crystal display) screen, an easy-to-use VCP (videocassette player), jacks for both video games and two sets of headphones, and a built-in 2-inch speaker. (Note that the LCD screen is not a television--no TV tuner is included nor are there jacks for one--and that the videocassette player does not record.)

As with all LCDs, the Roadrunner's 5-incher is light-sensitive, so the pivoting screen is essential if the backseat passengers are going to get a consistently good, if small, picture; the easily accessible controls help here, too. The 2-inch speaker produces decent sound, and it's clear enough as long as you keep the volume at a sane level. The dual headphone jacks are a great idea, allowing kids to watch a video or play a game in the backseat while the parents chat or listen to the auto sound system up front (though excited screams from video game players may challenge mom and dad!).

Aside from its small screen size, there isn't much not to like about the Roadrunner. It's a breeze to take in and out of a car. It can be used indoors, has clean ergonomics, and can entertain with tapes as well as video games. (We'd also suggest having a few sets of headphones handy, so front seat passengers can travel in peace if they like.) Though it isn't cheap, Roadrunner is sure to make those trips through the woods to grandmother's house a whole lot more fun for kids and parents alike. --Wayne Garcia
