Summary: One of my all-time favorites.
Review: "Jerimiah Johnson" is the story of a man who leaves civilization behind and sets out toward the mountains. What follows is a sweeping adventure filled with the harsh realities of a terribly difficult life, set within the backdrop of some very majestic scenery. During his travels Johnson picks up a small boy whose parents were killed by indians, and of all things, accidentally gets forced into marriage with an indian woman. Sometimes lighthearted, sometimes tragic, "Jerimiah Johnson" is a splendid example of the life of a mountain man. Redford is very solid as the young newcomer, while Will Geer is outstanding as a grizzled veteran of the mountains who teaches Johnson the art of survival. Between 1 and 10, "Jerimiah Johnson" gets a solid 9.

Summary: One of the three best Westerns ever made.
Review: Jeremiah Johnson, based on the true story of a mountain man whose last name was actually Johnston, is one of those rare movies that will burn itself into your memory. Beautifully filmed in the Wasatch mountains of Utah (near Robert Redford's Sundance Institute) and Zion National Park, this film envelops the viewer in the day to day struggle of man to survive. Redford and the late Will Geer give memorable performances as the mountain men you wish could go on forever. I rate Jeremiah Johnson among the three best Westerns ever made, along with The Searchers and Red River.

Summary: Compelling story line. Great scenery
Review: If you ever harbored fantasies of running off to the mountains to live a simpler life, this is your movie. The story is compelling - a veteran of a war in the mid 1800s (we never know which one) heads to the Rocky Mountains to separate himself from the troubles of society. He finds that separation is not possible, but the story line takes interesting deviations (with other mountain men, indians, and the first settlers in the region.

FABULOUS scenery of the high country of the Rockies in both warm and cold weather, and wonderful music (accoustic guitar and indian flute).

You know how there are two kinds of people in the world (for recreational purposes): mountain people and beach people? Well, if you are a "mountain people", this is a great movie for you.

A word of warning: It is kind of long - although well worth it. If you are not really into it, you might want to watch it over two nights.

I seldom watch any movie twice, and I watch this one at least twice a year.

Summary: a natural and realistic history lesson via R. Redford
Review: CAPTURES AND CLARIFIES LIFE IN THE WILDERNESS OF THE 18TH CENTURY AS SEEN THRU THE EYES OF A MASTER ACTOR AND NATURALIST!!!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Redford did a mind-meld with this role
Review: Redford, either through superior acting or content, has completely outdone himself for this viewer. Totally believable. Totally realistic. Too bad the movie couldn't have followed the book a little closer. END

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Jeremiah Johnson: a note on the theater
Review: Just a note about this wonderful movie. I saw it when it first came out. JEREMIAH JOHNSON the title page screamed, "with Robert Redford" next in small fonts. A few years later I was back at the theater to watch it again. ROBERT REDFORD the title page screamed, "in Jeremiah Johnson" next in small fonts. This movie (and a few others) had introduced Robert Redford to the world.
This movie should be appreciated by every movie lover. Among other things, it demonstrates how words, if chosen carefully, can be memorable in their sparseness.
