Summary: don't pay more than $50
Review: I bought two of these in November of 2002. The power went out on the first one in june of 2003. The power went out on the second one today 2 Feb. I am single and live alone and work 12-16 hours. I do not watch enough tapes/dvds to have the power go out. They did not last a year and a half. shop around on some of the reviews before purchasing.

Summary: Timer recording and calendar dates buggy
Review: I purchased this unit as for my secondary TV. I have had problems with the dates matching the days of the week and wrong number of days in a given month (often shows 31 days for months that only have 30, etc.) when setting up timer recording, causing shows not to be recorded. At first I thought this might be a bug because 2003 was a leap year, but still persist in 2004.

I have also had problems when changing recording times for a show set up to record Monday - Friday where the unit will not record the show. Had to delete the timer program and start over to correct this.

Summary: Average
Review: It works fine, no fancy buttons or accessories. So far, we've been pleased with the quality for the price we paid. It was the cheapest one we could find at the time.

Summary: This Unit Keeps VHS in Business
Review: It's a good thing that the Sylvania DVC850C has a built in VHS player since you will need it when after three months both the DVD player and warranty expire.

Summary: Bad Buy
Review: Purchased 11/02 - after warranty ran out, unit began eating commercial VHS tapes. After prying tape out of unit, DVD worked, but now that is bad as well - unit continues to shut down automatically. Funai/Sylvania is no help an no service local to my area in Columbus, OH?? Repair probably higher than $135 cost - junk. Ignored the advice not to purchase combos - never again.

Summary: Excellent equipment & easy to use!
Review: The Sylvania DVC850C DVD/VCR deck provides excellent quality video with both DVD and with VHS. Unlike another DVD Player that I have, set-up for DVD movies and concerts (4:3, 16:9, 5.1 Surround) is quick and easy. A great buy!

Summary: great buy
Review: This is a great deal for only 99$. I bought the same piece from best buy for 150$. I currently use it in my dorm room and its great. It is easy to use with all the controls located on the remote. A steal.

Review: This player died on me after 6 months. The VCR and DVD no longer work. Don't waste your money on this.

Summary: A Basic, No Frills product at good price
Review: This review was written after i used the product for couple of days.
First the drawbacks.
1) Clumsy scattered Remote control.
2) There is easily more room for picture quality. Right now picture is not bad, its ok.
3)Probably there is no way to record a DVD to VCR. A must feature.
But at this price i don't really care.
1) Its easy to setup.
2) And in all respect it would easily compete with more costlier version in the market
