Summary: The Combo for You
Review: If you are looking to consolidate your video/audio equipment, look no further than the Samsung DVD-V1000. For a reasonable price, you too may enjoy the high quality sound and picture of the Samsung DVD-V1000. I thought that I would have to get an RF converter to attach the DVD-V1000 to my 20 year old Hitachi TV. I was wrong. The DVD-V1000 has s-video, RCA, and coaxial input and outputs. I have also attached my Player Combo to a Sony receiver and I find that the sound is flawless. I only wish I could take advantage of the optical audio output from the DVD-V1000. Just today I find that AOL is offering the same machine. Don't wait another minute; this is the machine you've been looking for.

Summary: Great VCR, poor everything else
Review: If you don't own a DVD player yet, you won't know much of what you are missing. The quality of the VCR portion of the product is excellent, and the DVD playback is also fine. No need for an RF modulator, as everything you need to connect to TV's old or new is in the box. Get an S-Video connection ASAP, though.

Most problems start when you go to use the thing. Others have mentioned problems with the remote and menu functions; I, too have had situations where I had to turn it all of, and try it all again until it worked.

The biggest irritation will be to electronics buffs who chose this because other models were too high. If you have a DVD in the drive and turn the unit on, it will start the DVD no matter what you are trying to do. In the middle of getting the news? It will play the DVD. Switching to catch the latest MTV video? It will play the DVD. And forget RESUME functions. Turn the player off and you have to find your chapter anew. We have started to eject the DVD on turning the unit on if we want the VCR channel to stay on screen. Big irritation - big.

For the VCR side, until you PLAY a VHS tape the VCR display is not shown on screen (tape status, etc.). The controls on the remote are poor, and although it does double-function for your TV I wish some buttons were just TV and some buttons were just VCR. You will know what I mean when you see how small and oddly placed some of the remote functions are.

At a slightly lower price this product would be a great value; at the current price it isn't worth it, but does the job for a 2nd DVD player in the home to get rid of that old, yucky VCR you have had for years.

Summary: Love It!!
Review: It is SO nice to be able to have the two in one! I love that I only have to use up half of the space! I have some trouble getting it to not automatically go into DVD when I want to watch a video, but that would hardly pose a problem for me to send it back! I absolutely love this machine and consider it one of my best buys!!

Summary: bad quality
Review: It was a OK price, but bad quality. After I used it for about 2 weeks, the tray of the DVD player stopped working! Glad Amazon refunded my money.

Summary: annoying...and returned
Review: Needed a new VCR (the 14 year-old player died) and figured a combo unit would replace both VCR and CD player with added DVD capability. Stylish silver unit, relatively easy to hook up. So far, so good. Unfortunately the VCR side makes audible motor noise that becomes quite annoying during quiet dialogue. So I had to pull it all apart to take it back. Instead of exchanging, though, we're returning because of an annoying design feature. When the DVD/CD is on, the unit just reads PLAY. To see track and time one must dig the remote out of the sofa and hit the DISPLAY button. This is fine...except after a few seconds the unit goes back to PLAY again! A minor thing, but buyer beware. We're not audio/videophiles, but simple conveniences are important. If you like to know where you're at on the CD, consider another option.

Summary: Meets the requirements for basic DVD and VHS
Review: Not a even a mid range DVD player, but certainly meets the needs of those of us who still have a video collection but want to migrate to DVD and not have a rats' nest of connections. Playback is sharp and clear with little distortion. Remote is still a bit confusing with no clearly marked enter key for menu selections. However, at for the price paid and the single deck for both DVD and VHS, this unit is tough to beat, over $... less than competitiors from GO-Video.

Summary: Waste of Money
Review: Not only is the idea of having a DVD player and VCR bundled in one neat package space-saving, but it should also be money-saving. For the price of this Samsung DVD/VCR combo, though, you can buy a Samsung VCR and a DVD player seperately that are of higher quality. The Samsung VR8160 4 Head Hi-Fi VCR is praised by reviewers for its ease-of-use and great picture quality, while the VCR in this pack is considered simply subpar by most. Along with that, you can get the Samsung DVD-N501 Nuon DVD/HDCD Player, which is not only better than the faulty (understatement) DVD player in this package, but most other DVD players as well. It plays DVD's, CD's, MP3's, Nuon games, and has many more features. Walk away from this 'deal' and all other current VCR/DVD combos, because all you'll find are lower quality products for higher prices. See for yourself.

Summary: Sharp pix, snap to set up
Review: Our teen son had this out of the box, up and running in less than 5 minutes. We replaced our VCR with this unit and have the best of both worlds. He does a lot of video editing and the front panel access jacks are really handy. I was a little hesitant about the brand, associating it in the past with low end electronics. The picture quality is excellent, no skips or pauses. I was also pleased with the quality of the cabinet, remote and ease of use of this unit. Perfect for the average user and equal or superior to many other higher priced, well known brands. (PS-Using an S-video cable greatly improves picture quality over the standard coax cable.)

Summary: Lower Price will mislead you into buying poor quality item
Review: Received this item by ordering over internet. Never bought Samsung before, never will again. The DVD player component video output did not work properly. The DVD player takes forever to read and review the DVD before beginning play or display of menu. The remote is very limited, and not at all intuitive. Big mistake, sending it back and buying a GO Video player or JVC.
