Summary: Good Product
Review: Attractive Black front panel. Easy to set up, worked first time right out of box ! Video and audio quality good for a mid priced unit. Quiet DVD and Tape. Labels for lights and buttons on front of unit difficult to read in dim/under shelf location. Remote is on the small side. Some remote button labels in blue difficult to read in low light, not back lit. Still pleased with the purchase and give 4 stars. Worth the price

Summary: Good product, but just good
Review: Great for the home theatre lover on a budget, and/or those not wanting to spend money on two separate componets. However, there is no on-screen menu, and it is sometimes difficuly to switch between dvd and vcr mode. It is essentially two different componets with two different sets of controls in one box.

Summary: Love this dvd/vhs combo!
Review: I bought this model a year ago and love it! It's easy to use, easy to see and beautiful, and have had zero problems with it.

I bought a different brand for another room and have only used it 3 times since. That was about 9 months ago.

Guess which one I'm going to be buying again so I can get rid of the other? ;-)

Summary: Confusing Remote Control
Review: I found the remote control confusing and unreliable. I have read the instruction manual and found little help. The VCR works fine althougth the DVD has been a poor performer. The DVD has low sound volume when channeled through our TV. I have been disappointed with our purchase. However, it was delivered in a timley fashion and in a professional manner.

Summary: Philips DVD740VR DVD ONLY - VCR = BLUE SCREEN
Review: I purchase the Philips DVD740VR DVD-VCR Combo as a gift for a
girlfriend. It worked correctly for a few months (when it was
actually being used), but the VCR no longer works (unless you
call a Blue screen with audio/noise working. Adjusting the tracking did not work, cleaning and adjusting the heads didn't work... my guess is that the playback heads are shot (how & why, Idon't know). Since then, the VCR is actually getting worse. The DVD works fine, but I paid for a combo.
BEWARE: DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE ! It may work OK for some people, but the amount of negative reviews I have read only
leads me to ponder making LEMON-ade.

Summary: SVCD? I think not!
Review: I purchased this COMBO player and it does a good job with DVD,VCD,MP3, and VCR just fine. I have 2 issues. 1: There are horizontal lines on my screen during the dark scenes (I can adjust them out with brightness but 'comon!). 2: Everyone is trying to say it plays SVCD's which I can not make it do. Can anyone else get SVCD's to play on it?

Summary: Two thumbs down
Review: I received this DVD/VCR combo as a gift less than a year ago. For a few months the combo set worked without a snag; however, about two months ago, the DVD component began to act up. At first, the player itself seemed temperamental - choosing to play some DVDs and not others. Soon afterwards, the player door would continuously open and close (with and without a DVD inside). The opening and closing of the door would happen even when I had not pushed the button for opening and closing! The machine seemed somewhat possessed - I could only stop the opening and closing of the door by unplugging the entire unit. Needless to say, I couldn't play any DVDs. I called Philips regarding this situation, and they have asked that I send in my player (at my own cost). They will provide me with a refurbished set valued at $80. So, basically, all the good money that went towards this unit has been wasted. Avoid wasting your money on this combo set.
