Description:

The PT-47XD64 projection television is loaded with features to make your HDTV and DVD viewing as simple and as pristine as possible. The 47-inch set's huge HDTV display capability (1080i, 540p) and onboard digital tuners let you view free, high-definition or enhanced-definition TV programming right off the air. The set's wide, 0.52 mm fine-pitch screen is configured in a 16:9 aspect ratio, the standard for HDTV broadcasts as well as for widescreen DVD movies.

The set's innovations include a JPEG photo-viewing SD Card/PC Card slot and a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) for a direct-digital connection with a DTV receiver. The set's own QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming, and 2-tuner/split-screen picture-in-picture gives you unparalleled viewing convenience with scalable image sizes. Further, its authorized CableCARD ability means the set will also receive digital cable television systems services directly from the cable operator without requiring a bulky, external cable box.

A handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format is 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown reversal digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 540p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional video picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Panasonic's Progressive Cinema Scan (3:2 pulldown) provides faithful reproduction of film-based materials. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; Progressive Cinema Scan digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. A progressive-scan up-converter makes horizontal scan lines virtually invisible.

A motion-adaptive 3D-Y/C digital comb filter displays bright colors and action scenes with incredible clarity by minimizing the "color rainbow effect" in closely spaced patterns, compensating for the motion that occurs between fields.

Digital velocity-modulated scanning is advanced circuitry along the neck of the CRT senses transitions from black to white in the video signal. The black and white portions of the signal are sped up and slowed down, respectively, resulting in sharp black-to-white transitions. For a more film-like picture when watching movies, you may want to selectively turn off this circuitry.

Two-tuner picture-in-picture with split-screen display lets you view two programs at once by dividing the screen in half down the middle. Each program is shown at full height, with one program on the left side and the other on the right.

HDMI offers uncompressed digital data transmission between compatible devices (as between the PT-47XD64 and a DTV satellite receiver). Other connections include dual SD/HD component-video inputs, 4 composite- and 3 S-video inputs, and front-panel AV jacks for easy hookup with external devices. A set of composite-video-based AV outputs (including an optical digital-audio output) simplifies hookup with an external AV receiver and speaker system.

The TV's internal stereo speakers are powered by 15 watts total per channel. Other features include horizontal and vertical edge correction, Artificial Intelligence Picture Control (continuously monitors signal conditions to maintain high contrast), Artificial Intelligence Sound (minimizes variances in sound level), video noise reduction (compares individual pixels of 2 consecutive fields, then removes noise), BBE High Definition Sound (improves speech intelligibility and restores musical dynamic range), nine-point user convergence capability, an eye-catching 3-D on-screen menu system, and a light-disk remote control.
