THORENS TD185 Vinyl Record Turntable Component

Summary: not great; but not bad for the money
Review: I purchased this in the hope that it would be a newer version of the many Thorens tables I've owned over the years. I am tight for cash right now, so it was between this and the Music Hall table. Upon unpacking it, I was underwhelmed to say the very least. I thought,...well, it's only $300+/-, so I guess it's okay, but it sure ain't exactly the quality I remember. The cartridge was mounted (an Ortofon OMB10-great cheapo cartridge that I've used with success in the past), but certainly not accurately-if you get this table, check the alignment before using it. The set up was straightforward, and fit and finish were good. Here's the kicker: It sounds much, much better than I had expected. Not as good as my Linn from several years ago(I can no longer afford that kind of equipment), but detailed, warm, and musical. Of course it also functions flawlessly...and to think I almost packed it back up and returned it. If you can get over some of the mickey-mouse quality materials here and there, you will be pleased with this unit. ahhh, one thing I forgot to mention-the description is incorrect-THIS IS A FULY AUTOMATIC turntable.
