Summary: Kicks Major Boootay!! Incredible unit, Incredible price!!
Review: I was skeptical about the Recoton SVS1000 S-Video Switch because of its low price relative to alternative switches, but I read some positive reviews about it ..and therefore thought I would try it out since I could always return it. The positive reviewers were correct. It is a great little box and does exactly -- no more no less -- what I bought it for.

For neophytes, this switch solves "S-video crowding problems" experienced when one's TV possesses insufficient single S-video input jacks to accommodate all of one's peripheral video input devices. For instance, I have a "rack" in which I place my home theater components such as Receiver/Amplifier, DVD, 2 VCR's, PS2, Dreamcast, etc. Unfortunately my TV has only one S-video input and my HT receiver/amplifier can only "s-switch" two devices (DVD & VCR). Hence, this little lightweight 4-hub switch was a godsend.

Currently, I use it to conveniently switch between my PS2 & Dreamcast with the other slots reserved for a Game Cube and X-box. This allows me to leave my gaming setup perpetually hooked up in a neat and attractive manner, thereby avoiding the wrath of the "cablenazi" -- aka my wife :-) Furthermore, it adds convenience to any s-video connection such as hooking up one's camcorder (it's much easier plugging a cable into this tiny lightweight hub than it is reaching behind a heavy TV to "unplug-plug-replug" s-video cables).

Lastly, remember if you order this you will need an additional S-video cable (use Monster cables..) to connect the switch's output port into your TV or receiver.

In summary, I highly recommend this product and was just amazed at how cheaply it solved my cable connection problems.

Summary: perfect for anyone with a home theater setup
Review: I'll echo all the other great reviews of this S-Video switch. I was a little wary of how cheap it is, but I shouldn't have been. It works beautifully- we have a DVD player/VCR/Replay TV/Cable box/Sound system hooked up to our tv through this switch. One great thing about it is that it does not need a power cord, so it's one less cord floating around.

Make sure that you buy any composite video or S-Video cables that you'll use to hook this up, though, as it doesn't come with any.

Summary: A Great Device, Even Has More Uses Than Just S-Video
Review: I'm a big video game head and I'm the proud owner of 4 systems. The "Mad Catz System Selector" was cool until I purchased a Sega Dreamcast & a Sony PS2 with the S-type connection. I own a big screen TV and I need big picture color quality. The Recoton offered that and more. I'm now able to switch between 3 video game consoles and my VCR without the constant "plug-unplug" headaches that goes on behind my TV. The price is very reasonable for anyone to buy or you can buy a new receiver with more S-type connections (not a wise investment).

Secondly this device is an audio switch as well. When video games get boring, this device is connected to my audio amp for easy access to my MP3 player, CD-recorder, portable CD player and tape player. The one thing that would make this device better is a REMOTE CONTROL so that my lazy butt wouldn't have to get off the sofa. Please get this device if you need it......get it anyway because you may end up needing it.

Summary: A great little device for your home entertainment center
Review: Most modern television sets come with only two Audio/Video (front and back), and one S-Video connectors. So what do you do when your DVD player, satellite receiver, Playstation, TiVo, etc want those for themselves?

You can either move your television and plug/unplug whatever you're going to use at the time (which can drive you nuts, not to mention wear out your connectors), or just invest in one of these little things.

I love how simple the Recoton is. You just plug your stuff into the back of it (up to 4 different devices), then run another set of cables from the "out" jacks to the back of your TV. That's it! I've seen other little boxes that do the same thing for hundreds of dollars, and need electricity to work. A total waste of money, in my opinion. I keep my Recoton on top of my television set, and switch between each device with a push of a button now. No more having to deal with wires everywhere or moving the TV.

The Recoton doesn't come with extra cables to run from the back of it to your TV set, so if you don't have some spare A/V and S-Video cables around, be sure to get a set. I personally use the brand from Monster Cable, which has wonderful picture quality.

Summary: Handy Device Does What it is Designed for!
Review: Of course it doesn't create S-video out of composite, stupid!I'm amazed at people who don't get it sometimes. This device is areal dandy for hooking things up to your home entertainment system, and for connecting things to the computer it can't be beat. I have atuner to play my Mp3's through, with bookshelf speakers, analogcamcorder, VCR, remote feed cameras from a company called X-10, allsorts of stuff. S-video is only used for other S-video connections. You can buy a gizmo which will convert AV into S-video, right here atAmazon, but it costs about a hundred bucks and isn't worth it becausethe quality doesn't improve. It just eliminates a connector on onepart of the system. Instead of plugging and unplugging things fromthe back of my computer I just have this one switchbox and reach upand punch a button down. I have one on my computer and one on my homeentertainment system, and it works on either system quite well. Whatis cool about reaching around into the back of your system wheneveryou want to change something because of a lack of connections? Forthe computer sound system it gives you the flexibility of inputting tothe line-in, and if you have an All-In-Wonder video card or two, likeI do, you can hook up arrangements for sound video input, as well ashaving a firewire. For [the money] this thing is a great piece ofequipment, and if I didn't think so I wouldn't have two-count'em, two-of them in my house already.

Summary: Video quality is awful
Review: The other reviews are bewildering. This switch IS easy to use, but the output is absolutely terrible. You'll get blurriness and dot crawl added to any input. I don't consider myself skilled at seeing video imperfections, so it's not a subtle problem. It's very, very obvious and it's simply unacceptable.

Summary: look for the SVS1000A model
Review: The SVS1000A model allows you to have some inputs with only composite video, but still output to the S-video port (I haven't tested this, but the box says it will work). The video quality won't be as good, but it is very convenient. The "A" model case looks a little different too. FYI, your local Best Buy store might carry these.

I've also read that this switch can be used for component video, as long as you're consistent with your color combinations (mapping your red, white, and yellow to red, green, and blue).

Great deal for the money.
