Summary: A super easy entry into the world of video moviemaking
Review: After wanting a videocam for a couple of years, I finally took the plunge with this one. My choice has proven itself over and over again to have been right on target. I was shooting videos within 10 minutes of getting home with the TR818, with only brief reference to the manual (on how to open the door to put the tape in.) I am a true video novice, but everything else --insertion of battery, actual recording, activation of the cool Nightshot infrared capability, switch from record mode to playback-- was achieved intuitively. This is my first videocam, and I LOVE it. The icing on the cake is that pictures play back crisply on a 27" screen TV. Beautiful. I am sorry now I waited so long to buy a recorder, because with cameras like the TR818 out there, no one has any reason to be intimidated by the technology any longer.

Summary: The Price Says it All
Review: I finally bought the Sony 818 the other day after looking around for a camcorder for some time.

I decided on the 818 over the Cannon ES60 because the 818 comes with more features like night shot, steady shot, and a fantastic feature that tells you how many minutes of battery life you have left.

The camera was a piece of cake to learn to operate. It was very self explanitory and the bit of the manual I did read seemed very helpful.

The 818 does lack some features which may be important to some people. For one, it does not have a side mounted viewfinder like the next model up. It also does not have a built in light. However, the viewfinder is color (the next model up is not although it does have a side mounted viewfinder) and you can purcahse a light and mount seperately from Sony for about 100 Canadian Dollars. If you are going up to the next level specifically for the light don't bother! Buy it seperately and buy the 818.

The quality of the footage on my 26 inch TV does not seem the best. The audio is alright but does pick up "white noise" like most camcorders.

The 818 is the lowest model of Camcorder sony makes. The third lowest, which is about 300 Canadian Dollars more, is exactly the same as the 818 except for the built in light, and the side mounted colour viewfinder (which the more expensive model has If these features don't excite you go for the 818! You get the same camera the same quality, the same lense, the same everything except these features.

I suggest the 818 to most people but if you are very concerned by "white noise" and a slightly fuzzy picture then go to a digital or otherwise much higher model.

Summary: So Far So Good
Review: I got mine last week and it has been great so far. I'm happy with the picture quality and surprised at all the features included. The price was the major selling point as was the ability for it to play my old 8mm tapes from a previous machine. So far i'm happy I didn't spend the big bucks on a digital camcorder. I did however have to go out and purchase and additional battery because the one that comes included only lasts about 50 minutes. The new battery...lasts 3+ hours.

Summary: Very Good Product
Review: It is a very good product for the price that we pay for it. All the advertised Specs works and Much better than any other camcorder in it's class. I Found that this Camcorder has S-Video out too! which is very cool, It can be used to Capture Video using a MPEG Capture card and make VideoCDs!. It has LP mode and with Proper Tapes you can get about 8hrs of recording time. The supplied Battery lasts for about 160mins. Again it is a very cool product 5 Stars for it!, Buy it if you still can find it, It is hard to find this product in stores and ONLINE.

Summary: Lightweight & easy to use
Review: It's lightweight & easy to use. It has the Sony Nigthshot feature for 0 Lux recording. The battery that came with it gave me 190 minutes from the battery display (850amphrs). I left it recordng & it went for 2 hours & then some as I didn't get to see how long it would record but at least that long. I found it easy to hold & the buttons are pretty comfortable. The zoom is an easy slide button on top instead of a rocker switch. The viewfinder was clear & with a nice adjustment so that I could see things sharp. It can even make the text in the viewfinder twice as big. The digital zoom is great but you get fuzzy pictures using it with any camera, but lucky with this camera you can turn it off, or set it to 40x or 200x. The optical zoom of 20x is very nice. Most digital cameras only have 10x zoom. I don't miss the pull out lcd view finder because I don't want strangers looking at it & I don't need a digital camera after all cause I can input the video with the s-video out on this camera into my computers s-video in card & have a digital mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 recording on the HD. Windows ME & Xp come with free video editing software anyway for this & I can out put it to vcd or svcd. Also nifty is a cool option to turn off the record light in front of the camera so people don't know you are recording :-)

Summary: Very good; 5 stars!
Review: This camcorder is wonderful! I tried one to film a small movie for my sons softball team and found myself making several movies. I love the viewfinder and the many picture effects (Mosaic, Solarization, Monotone, etc.). And you can insert custom titles in 22 different languages. The Lithium-Ion battery lasts forever and recharges. This model comes with Sony's Nightshot which makes it able to shot movies in total darkness. This really is a great camera.
