Summary: PC users beware
Review: I recently bought a 20 gb ipod from Amazon. The Apple people seemed to clame that it connected to windows just fine...which it doesn't. First it doesn't come with a USB cord, which is the easiest way to connect the ipod to windows. Then it was close to impossible to find one of these USB cords. I ended up getting firewire for my Dell. Even that was hard, if you buy a Belkin firewire port, make sure you can connect power to it. I had to buy to different ports before it worked. Once I got past the hastle of connecting the ipod, I loved it.

Review: the iPod is a great mp3 player. i have windows XP and it's worked like a dream thru iTunes and i know a bunch of people who've had a great time thru EphPod. i really suggest getting this! a tip- get the firewire especially if you're getting a 20/40 gb iPod. the uploading takes NO time whatsoever (10 minutes for 10 gigs!). and for all of you who think the battery thing is horrible. Apple has changed it! you're battery can be replaced for free under warranty (in the last month, replace whether or not you need to) and after warrany it's 100 dollars. And the same thing fo the rio! it's amazingly easy to use and a great machine!!!!!!!!

Summary: Dell Users beware!
Review: I recieved an iPod 20 GB for christmas. This was something that I wanted very much but I could bring myself to indulge in.
I opened the beautifully designed package and held in my hands what seemed to be the most perfect technical invention to come to the mass market. I was in awe of its sleek design. It evoked a feeling of inner peace as I used the wonderful dial mechanism to scroll though menus.

Then, I hooked it to my Dell Laptop Computer and the dream turned into a nightmare.

The device informed me that it could not connect to the iPod, that a "restore" was necessary. I pressed the restore button and politely waited. After about 10 minutes (the device said do not disconnect after all, and I am very patient), my dell crashed. Dells almost never crash. I switched to a Dell Desktop. Again, a crash, only this time worse. Even when I disconnected the iPOD again, the installed software consistantly crashed my Dell until I removed it.

I thought, but wait. Apple, how could such an object of perfect work so disastrously? I tried calling Apple, but they tech support was not available on the weekend night I called :-(
I then exchanged the iPod for a new IPod. Same, exact symptoms: total system meltdown of a brand new Dell laptop.

Apple has a serious problem if they cannot make a product compatible with one of the most (if not the most) popular computer makers on the planet.

I am packing my second iPod up and sending it back for a full refund. Save yourself the trouble and avoid it if you are one of the misfortunate few how might own a Dell.

Summary: iPod not all that!
Review: I spent a fair amount of time researching which mp3 player to buy - and of course the iPod seemed to have the most hype. So, I bought it. However, I when I got it and attempted to use it - it was a flop. First of all, my PC did not have the firewire port, only the USB one and of course the iPod does NOT come with it, you have to make an additional purchase. So that was a problem for me (especially since most stores are out of this apparatus). Second, the software couldn't be installed on my computer. I received an error message stating I needed to update my platform to Windows 2000 - yet, I already have WIN2000. So it was a no go.

Summary: My iPod.. the best mp3 player ive ever had
Review: This Christmas, the iPod was on everyone's wish list. I was fortunate enough to receive one, the 20GB one, and since i got it, i havent stopped using it. Unfortunately, my iPod came without a FireWire to connect to my PC and therefore, it was around a week before i managed to buy one of those (from Amazon.co.uk, costing around £17/$26). However, once i had got one, i realised just how good and worthwhile having an iPod can be. Ive downloaded many of my CDs onto my iPod, and will be borrowing Cds from my friends to store on my iPod. It is much better than a normal mp3, simply because of its fanastic storage capacity. The battery lasts a long time and i have brought it on many car, bus and train journeys, i even took it to a JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE concert! Another advantage to having an iPod is that everyone is impressed by it! People who i've never spoken before ask me about it, and all my friends keep asking to borrow it.. However, i dont think i'll let them just yet.. Maybe once the compliments start dying down.. Thanks apple, for creating this great mp3 player! If you dont have an iPod, i strongly advise you to get one asap!

Summary: The iPod leads the way
Review: Unlike a large chunk of the reviewers for this product, I actually own the 20gb ipod. It is perfect. I will not say how much other players suck, because this is to inform people about the quality of the ipod. Will everybody stop complaining about the price? You know the price and will pay it if you think the product is worth it. Obviously many people think the ipod is worth the price or else it wouldn't be the #1 selling mp3 player. And what is with people attacking the looks of the ipod and giving it a 1-star review because you don't like the way it looks even when you don't own the ipod? It looks awesome. If you don't like the way it looks, that is your own problem. The ipod is liquid smooth in everything it does. The interface is extremely intuitive. All the controls feel good and are easy to use. The ipod feels good in the hand. The sound quality is extremely good. It has great features. The battery life is not that big of an issue, and the battery can be replaced for as low a $50. I run windows xp and have had no trouble with syncing and such. And what is with the "The ipod crashed my computer". Either you didn't know what you were doing, or you are just lying because you want to make a company you hate for no reason look bad. Face the fact: Apple make a great product, and nobody can beat it. It may not have a huge bullet list of features like FM-transmitting, but then again, there is no good mp3 jukebox that does fm-transmitting well anyway. It is a well build product - even the box is quality - much thought was even put into how the ipod is packaged. Because you pay the higher price, you get the higher quality. The iPod is King!

Summary: Not all that intuitive
Review: I'm not an Apple user but have heard about how great the products are so maybe I expected too much. Let's start with software installation on my Windows XP Pro computer. If you choose to connect and update your iPod during the software installation, you get a dialog box asking to restart your computer. DON'T DO IT since the rest of the software is being installed and you'll just have to go through it all over again.

Now for the iPod - the touch controls are annoyingly imprecise. You'll have to spend a little time getting the hang of how much to move your finger around the touchpad. I kept wishing I could grab a stylus. And it's easy to accidentally turn it on so keep it in Hold mode after you turn it off.

More annoyances: the manual and the online support tell you that you can change the options from the default auto update by selecting manual update from the options menu. What they don't tell you is that the options menu (no, not the one under the Edit menu) only appears as an icon in the lower right of iTunes when the iPod is connected. So, if you've loaded some songs on your iPod from one computer and didn't happen to know about this, when you go to a different computer to load songs, you have to overwrite everything on the iPod before you can change the options to manual. Then you'll have to go back to the first computer to load the songs again. This is just stupid design - these options should be on the iPod.

And speaking of options, take a look at the ones under the Edit menu and uncheck all the stuff you thought you got rid of during installation - like using iTunes as your default player or automatically checking for updates.

If you use your iPod on a single computer, like iTunes for listening and don't mind behind your back connections to Apple, then the default settings will suit you just fine. Those settings automatically look for new songs in your library, adds them to the iPod and dismounts it (in manual mode you have to eject it yourself) whenever you connect your iPod to your machine.

It looks nice and sounds good but the battery doesn't last very long. I bought the Belkin battery pack (battery pack is for music play only - not hard drive mode) which seems to work and overcomes the measly 4-5 hours I'd get otherwise.

To be honest, I wouldn't buy it again if I knew how quirky it was. After it dies, which shouldn't take too long, I hear, I'm going to get a flash disk player.

Summary: iPod blows away the competition (Samsung, Dell)
Review: I'm a Windows XP user and I have had almost no problems with my iPod. It has taken a little tweaking, but us Windows users are used to tweaking our machines. Come on, isn't that why we love Windows so much, because it is so versatile?

But seriously, the iPod is by far the greatest mp3 player available. I'm not even that huge an Apple fan like so many of the iPod users, and I ABSOLUTELY love it. iTunes is great, and makes it so easy to do everything. The distinctive Apple interface is present everywhere, and it really makes a big difference. Any mp3 player that requires you to use Windows Media Player should be avoided!

I would highly recommend the iPod to the user who has some extra cash and can pay the extra amount for a superior product. If you are in the market for an iPod keep in mind the brand new iPod mini just made available.
