Summary: Problems, Problems...
Review: I have to number myself among the nay-sayers who have had loads of problems with this unit. I have already had Philips replace my old, defective with a new deck and, right out of the box, I had the same old problems with: 1. Not finalizing CDs, 2. "Disc Error" messages, 3. Wasted CDs that would not format, not be recognized, or not be ejected.

It also will not work with 80 minute Music CDRWs, so forget buying these, although that's increasingly all that you can find available these days in stores.

It's a lose-lose machine, compounded by Philips terrible customer service, not-in-service phone numbers, and general "try to find us, we dare you" approach to repairs.

Buyer be ware!

Summary: Timing is everything
Review: I more than realize that warrenties are not forever, but how frustrating and maddning it is to have a product take a dive about three weeks after the one year warrenty expires. Talk about built-in obsolescence. I loved making compilation CD's for birthday gifts for my family. After spending about two hours putting a great mix together for my brother's B-Day, I hit the finalize button. It normally takes a little over two minutes to complete this function. Well, about a minute and a half into it the process it just stopped. I couldn't get the recording tray door to open, the read out said nothing. I finally turned the machine off, then back on to get the recording tray door to open. I took the recorded disk and put it into the playback tray and the display read "not finalized".......Long story short, I went through every recording mode.."Make CD", "Fast Record" and "Record Listen" and basically wasted 6 new TDK 74 minute CD-R audio discs trying to make it work and ended up each time with the same problem...CD "Not Finalized". At the time of purchase from Circut City there were only two makes of dual tray Playback/Record decks on the market, Philips and Harmon-Kardon. From other reviews I've read here, I made a purchase mistake and should have paid the extra ... bucks for the Harmon-Kardon. I paid almost $... to get a little over a years use out this equipment.

I'm reluctant to take it to a repair shop based on other customer reviews with similar problems that were fixed, only to have the same problem occur again a few months later. Prices on this same model Philips have now dropped by almost $... and there are several other brands now available that are approaching about half of what I paid originally.

After a ridiculous call to Philips Service 800 number, which ended up with me hanging up in frustration on a person who obviously didn't have a clue what the problem might have been, I've pretty much had to face the fact that I'm just plain out of luck and $500.00.

It sounds like this model has a consistant flaw in the area of "Disc Finalization" and I'm now a member in a growing club of poor consumers who have purchased this "Lemon"....Let the Buyer Beware!

Summary: GREAT IF YOU GOT NO HOME PC
Review: I myself have this model and am very pleased with it. even though I wish I had a pc RW-Drive for thay have more options. I have herd that the harmon is a good unit it just cost to much for the added 4x high speed dubbing. If I had to do it all over I would go with the philipsCD-R/RW 775 or higher model. But all in all the 775 ofers some of the best recordings I have ever seen!!! So in short I give the 775 a five star rating!! Go philips!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: I WASTED MY MONEY!
Review: I purchased my unit from now-defunct Mercata, which was an online buying group. When my unit malfunctioned after maybe 3 CDs and the technical support people at Philips were unable to help me, they suggested I send it back, which I did. Mercata shipped me a new unit. After maybe a year and 10 more CDs (obviously I used it lightly) made, the second unit malfunctioned. I am attempting to get Philips to stand by the unit and though I won't get my money back, I may get a new unit. Honestly, I'm not totally sure I want another one as the quality just isn't there. Even when they were working, they were very quirky.... I guess I'm pursuing this mainly because I hate to think I threw away my money. It just seems to me that an electronics device should be good for more than 10 uses!!

Summary: I suggest you try Minidisc!
Review: I was attracted to this page by the price tag on a CD recorder. After reading many of the comments of the people on here, I am amazed that CD recorders are so popular. Aside from the complaints about the many things that go wrong with this model, I'm surprised about the comments that show up about how CD recording works even if it works right. For example, one person said, "I hit the finalize button. It normally takes a little over two minutes to complete this function." Amazing! (Negatively so.) Or another, "There are a few steps that if you mess up on any one of them, you accidentally record on the wrong tracks." I recommend to those of you who like to make mixes of your favorite songs off of CD, record, and/or tape, to get a Minidisc recorder! I have one by Sony--Amazon.com sells the [price] model (MDSJE-440); I have a similar model. I LOVE THIS THING! Recording is a piece of cake. And screw-ups are no problem. Tracks can be moved, divided, combined, and erased...at ANY time! During your recording session, days or weeks later, and all with great ease. And it's digital quality recording (direct digital from CDs). So don't mess with wasted CD-Rs that one mistake and they're toast, or even the inconveniences of CD-RW recording; for only [price] you can get a quality Sony Minidisc recorder, and Minidiscs are pretty cheap too. PLUS you can record up to FIVE HOURS on a Minidisc--try doing that on a CD-R!

Summary: SAD JUST SAD
Review: I was reading some of the reviews and i began to chuckle,at least i was not the only sorry one....I was very happy in the beginning and made a few great mix cd's for when i hit the road.( that is the reason i purchased it ! )I tried to use it recently and when i turned it on i heard this vroooom vroooom vrooom sound from the recording side. The sound went away so i tried to make another cd,well YOU GUESSED IT ,,no good.Tried again wasted another cd.Such a shame. It's not old at all.No need for me to get it fixed. It'll probably cost more than the unit.
SO BE AFRAID,VERY AFRAID...SAD JUST SAD!

Summary: Excellent reproduction at an affordable price
Review: I'm in the process of transferring all my old (some, very old!) LPs to cd and this recorder is perfect for the job. It's reasonably easy to use and I was recording from an external source (a turntable) within a half hour of setup. Although I hear some inevitable noise between tracks on the vinyl, that's inevitable due to the age of the originals; the fidelity of the sound tracks themselves is wonderful and sometimes it seems even better than the original.

It's also easy to copy directly from other CDs and can fast copy a complete CD, for archival purposes of course, in double time.

For the discerning audiophile, this is a worthwhile purchase.
