Summary: Well Designed
Review: After much searching online for a good mp3 CD player, I decided that the iMP-400 looked like the right CD player for myself (unfortunately this was just a little before the release of the iMP-550). It had many features that appealed to me, and I have remained happy with it over the last 9 or so months.

On the upside, I have loved all the features about this player, with the ability to play mp3's, audio CD's, AND have the radio function to be the most prominent features. The svelte styling of the player has impressed many people, along with the slim size of it. I also have defiantly put it through its paces by taking it camping/hiking along with my everyday use. The layout of the remote control, although somewhat tough to learn at first, provides instant access to all of the important functions. Also impressive is the inclusion of many minor features such as the inclusion of an audio-out port to connect the player to a sound system (I have also used it to connect a second set of headphones to share music with a friend). Another is the ability to select the next track to be played with out interrupting the current song; this ability is still available during random mode. The fact that the player uses firmware has allowed updates to include new modes and features, and even a snake-style game!

On to the bashing section of my review:
One of the faults previously touched on by other reviewers is the time that this system takes to power up. When I want music, I want it NOW, not 30 seconds from now.
Recently, the remote control's center button stopped responding. By taking apart the control (and probably voiding its warranty) I determined that the cause of the problem was that the pin attached to the backside of the button to depress the capacitor had inadvertently snapped. Although annoying, the problem was easily solved with the use of some gel-like super glue.
The player turns off when it is connected to, or detached from, the AC adaptor, which means that I have to go through the long boot process again.
My final grudge (although not too much the companies fault) is that only non-protected WMA's can be played (something I only found out after I had encoded most of my music library with the protection on)

All in all, if you want a mp3 player that also plays your CDs, the iRiver series is as good as they come. But if you don't plan to use its ability to play standard CD's too often, you may be better off with a hard drive player.

Summary: one of a kind!
Review: although we dont have this specific product! my Mother owns a Slim X product mp3/cd player! we go on lots of vacations in the car and so we need LOTS of music!hee hee hee!!! we spend weeks and weeks making music mixes! and take off, on the trip listening to cds!
the quality of the frame is wonderful it has yet to be "rusting" the remote has broken once but that was my fault when i closed the car door on it! it was an easy fix! the batteries were rechargable and theres a car adapter so if the batteries died on a road trip we could still listen to music and recharge the batteries at night when were not on the road! mom also runs a few miles in the mornings and takes the player with her she said it doesnt skip, so i was sold... (i even "borrowed" it for a while when running, myself!...^_^) and since mom doesnt listen to the raidio she doesnt have extra buttons to gripe about!^_^ well i love moms slim X and my friends have similar slim X products also so i highly suggest slim X products.
enjoy!!!!

Summary: A Great CD/MP3 Player, but why pay $80.00 extra right now?
Review: Before I give my review, why are people paying $80.00 for this product insead of getting the just as great SlimX iMP 350. There is actually no difference, except for the remote. On the 350, it uses 75 degree rotating dials on the top and bottom for navigation. It's no hassle to change music. On the 400, it uses a d-pad and center enter button. Both have there pros and cons, but each in it is equal. Now for my review. SlimX makes excellent products (minus any CD player less than the 350). This one is no exception. It has excellent sound quality, excellent battery life (around 12 hours on a charge), and has great skip protection. Also, how can you go wrong with being able to carry 6 hours of 128kbps music with you? If you want to spend a little more, go with a Nomad Zen (excellent bang for the buck). Other wise, if CD's are your thang, go with the SlimX 350 or 400.

Summary: Almost perfect for this picky consumer...
Review: Before venturing into the costly world of MP3 players, I wanted to be well informed and researched almost every MP3 player available on Amazon. Flash memory is the most convenient type but as a good one (in terms of memory) can be [$+], I decided a MP3 readable CD player would be an excellent solution. I am very happy with it--although it has a few design issues, the iRiver iMP-400 certainly lives up to its hype.
The Good Stuff:
1. Tons of features to customize to your liking (languages too)
2. Beautiful slim design
3. Good sound (has an customizable EQ)
4. Back-lit remote which definately increases its readibility
5. Easy to sort through folders and lists
6. Has a radio (reception is okay)
7. Comes with rechargable batteries and has AC adapter
The Bad Stuff:
1. Awful headphones (I replaced them with the Sennheiser MX500)
2. Unless the hold button is on, the remote buttons are easy to push accidently as the remote itself is only about the width of two fingers
3. Remote control cord is too long (~30 inches)! With my headphones plugged in, I feel like an octopus dragging so many cords around. They tangle at every opportunity!
4. Most of the necessary options are on the remote, the main console offers no text
5. My player has only given me about half the battery life it advertises
6. Weaker bass (even with the tweaked EQ) so beware if you like rap, R & B, soul, etc.
7. Price ... is hard to swallow
8. Console can get warm if you play it for a while (I generally listen up to three hours at one sitting)
Still, a product worth recommending if you are looking for customizable features and slimness! If you just want something that will simply play the songs, I recommend the Sony D-NE710 ATRAC3/MP3 CD Walkman. It has better bass, plays Sony's ATRAC3 but has little else in comparison. --This text refers to an alternate option.

Summary: Top of the CD MP3 player market.
Review: CD MP3 players are quickly becoming obsolete, why go to the trouble of burning CD's when you can just upload songs 20 times faster. Memory wise CD players are super cheap, 1 CD costs about a 20 cents compared to the big bucks for spare memory cards, that to me is the only advantage of CD MP3 players. CD players are big and bulky and not easy to fit in ones pocket. The no skip feature is touchy at best, sometimes it great sometimes it isn't. Battery wise, its inevitable that CD players will use more batteries then rigid MP3 players.

Overall if your in the market for a CD MP3 player buy this, its top of the market, but if your just wanting a portable MP3 player, go look at MP3 players that don't use CD's.

Summary: Don't buy it!!
Review: DON't BUY this item. It's not available at Amazon's warehouse!! I ordered the item 3 weeks ago...and still haven't received it yet...no...i should say it hasn't been even shipped yet. Now they extend another 3 weeks for the estimated shippment date (note: shippment date, not even delivery date). It's awfully pathetic...why didn't Amazon honestly tell me that the item is out of stock?? Then i wouldn't have bought this item in the first place. Extremely disappointed with the integrity of service!!! --This text refers to an alternate option.

Summary: great if u really want an mp3 cd player
Review: first of all i would like to say this is a great product for anyone completely set on an mp3 cd player. If you are a first time digital audio buyer like i was plaease give a flash or hard drive player much more consideration. I thought this would probably be a better player than most because it could play cds. to get cds you just have to go thru the simple process of ripping. i bought an archos 10 gb mp3 player recorder and am so much more satisfied with it than my iriver. it has the useful feature of recording and more battery life. If you are worried about price or portability then please get a flash based player. you will be much more satisfied, but if you want an mp3 cd player this is the one to go with

Summary: Special fonts support is the best
Review: For me, the special fonts support is the best feature of this player. In fact, this is the only MP3 player that you can purchase in North America to display 37 fonts, including Chinese characters. I am originally from Hong Kong and I have 10 GB collection of Chinese MP3 songs with Chinese titles and artists and this player will show them all. It will also show the other 36 languages as well.

A word of caution regarding the playback of recordable CD: use the slowest speed (1x or 2x) to record the CD. At higher speed, the player will start to skip and play at the middle of a song.
