Summary: Impressive MP3 Player--Great Price
Review: 1) Sounds Great (but toss the cheap headphones and get good ones).

2) Great "random play" functions. Randomly plays throughout the whole disc regardless of multiple folders, or will randomly play inside specific folders.

3) Plays up to 80 HOURS on 2 AA batteries! The unit does this by uploading the (MP3 or Atrac) songs into a buffer memory before playing each song which takes about 3 seconds. Then the disc stops spinning and it plays the song like a flash memory MP3 player! Don't worry about it taking too long to "read" all the files on disc--it does this very fast when you first put the disc in--it seems to take less than 10 seconds??

4) Much cheaper and higher capacity than flash memory MP3 players.

5) Nice design and easy-to-use controls.

6) Complete high-quality car kit!

This thing is cool! The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of five is that I've only had it for a week and only time and use will tell if it will last and continues to be reliable.

***NOTE*** The goofy manual never said how to turn the power off on the unit...I've been struggling with that for a week until I finally stumled across the answer...just hit the "stop" button and the unit will turn ITSELF off in about 14 seconds.

Summary: Re: complaint about resetting when car is turned off
Review: All you have to do to retain your settings and have the music start up where you left off when you turned off the car is to keep batteries in the CD player. Apparently the power supplied by the batteries (even though you're not using the batteries to power your CD player while your car is running) is enough to retain the settings, etc. This is probably true of any CD player, not just this particular one.

Summary: Keeps going and going and ...
Review: Bought it last year and am very pleased with this player. Used it while riding the train. Worked fine when I strapped it while jogging. High quality sound. The batteries seem like they last forever. Off late the gadget geek in me wanted to buy a flash based mp3 that plays OGG once this player goes bad. I dropped it from 2 feet height once (not intentionally :) ). But this player just plays fine. Cant wait till this goes bad to justify buying another mp3-player. I may have to come up with some good excuse to present to my CFO at home.

Summary: Help?
Review: Can you play the mp3 cd in a car using the cassete adapter or will the car's cassete player only read regular cd's?

Summary: Great MP3 player. Incredible value!
Review: Contrary to the stated in another review, this is a great MP3 player. It supports 16 - 320 kbps MP3 files and also VBR (variable bit rate) encoded MP3 files. Atrac3plus is the SONY's proprietary audio compression format and the included software is a bonus. It is not necessary to use it, unless if you wish to try the Atrac3plus compression technology (be aware that standard MP3 players cannot read Atrac3plus files).

The G-PROTECTION function works extremely well for both audio and MP3 CDs. Using the player in the car, even in off-road conditions it had never skipped a track. The battery life is surprisingly long (about 75 hours of continuous MP3 playing).

Sound quality is very good: headphones are decent and three-level bass control is provided. Operation is easy: the JOG DIAL simplifies the MP3 group/file selection; P MODE button allows shuffle tracks of the entire disc, only in the selected group or play only tracks with bookmarks. It is also possible select m3u play lists. The two-line LCD display is not large but is quite legible. The display shows the information contained in the ID3 tag for MP3 files or the CD text if available.

Certainly this player is not perfect, some minor deficiencies are pointed in other reviews, but for $80 the Sony D-NE518CK ATRAC3/MP3 CD Walkman is a incredible value.

Summary: Bad Choice
Review: Everything seems fine about this item until it's actually hooked up in my car. Everytime I turn the car off, the power to the player is off and it resets everything. The volume is digital so it resets to level 1, the cd starts on the first track, and the incredibly annoying beeping sound (when changing tracks, starting the cd, and continuously while paused) is reinstated. Basically this means that every time I start the car I have to hold the stop button for one second while turning the car on (to disable the beeping), set the volume, and find what track I was on. I'm sending it back. Don't buy it if your cigarette lighter turns off when the car is off.

Summary: Phenomenal price and value...
Review: I couldn't be more thrilled. I bought this unit after admittedly too much research and it frankly blew my mind! I fell for the concept of converting up to 490 high quality audio tracks onto one CD with the ATRAC3PLUS format and also the "all in one" value of getting the AC adapter, the DC adapter, the remote control and the software for one low price. (I really wanted to believe that the 490 songs would sound great or close to great but in truth I was a bit skeptical. Still I went for it.) I took the included software and converted about 1,600 existing MP3s (on about 10 cds) to 3 ATRAC3PLUS at the highest compression. On average, I got about 560 songs on a cd. It took about 3 hours to burn one disc which is a bit of a downside (@ 8X CD-R). However, when I put in the freshly made CD, I was in awe. It sounds great. Please know, I'm not an audiophile. But in my company issued Ford Taurus (2003), through the stock speakers, it sounds incredible. The provided remote control is awesome. It mounts really solidly onto the dash with this super firm velcro-type adhesive. There is only one negative I can discern thus far. When you turn your car off, if your DC outlet does not maintain power flow to the unit and all power is cut off, the Volume on the unit resets back to ZERO (the lowest level). Because the Volume control is really hard to get to, especially with the remote control plug right next to it, this is a major inconvenience (again, only if your car cuts off all juice to the unit while your car is turned off - mine keeps the current flowing thankfully.) But if it didn't, every time I'd start up the car, I'd have to reach down and find the volume button and hold it - this, basicallly, would be a pain. Let's review, though - the unit rules and presents great value and sound quality.

Summary: A frustrating piece
Review: I did lots of research on the internet and believed this one was a good buy. Since it includes everythinh: SONY tech, CD/MP3, full set of car adapter kit, remote.
This afternoon I bought one from local store and noo sooner than I got in to the car had I hesitated to open the package.
It turned to be VERY DISAPPOINTING. I tried a CD in it first with casette adapter connected to my car's cassetteplayer . The sound was very low even I tuned my car player's volume to the max, and the cassette was generating lound noise. The sound quality was also very bad, even compared to the cassette I recorded from the same CD.
REALLY FRUSTRATED.
I'm not sure if I can return it since I've broken the package.

Summary: Works great in my car.
Review: I got it in 1st week of Jan' 04, especially for my car. It's working great with good sound, and no issues, including skip, etc. since last few weeks. Car remote is really very handy, and works as expected. After putting the batteries in it, it remembers the songs in your car, and starts exactly at the point, where you left it.
