Summary: Nice System But Man Are The Power Ratings Off....
Review: ...I've really come to enjoy it. I will say that the newer versions have fixed the problems with menus and such. I have had no problems with it. My minor complaints seem to be common: there is no way it puts out the advertised wattage and the remote buttons are awkward and often don't fire when pressed. I have to press them 2 to 4 times to get it to be seen. All in all, a pretty nice replacement for my old component stereo system. One other note: don't expect to replace the speakers with an AM-5 or something, they are all integral parts.

Summary: Yet another croaker...
Review: As a few of the other recent reviews reveal, this system is a lemon. I too have a very expensive piece of crap on my hands and no sound system. Oh, and my 3 new DVDs are stuck inside as well. My options, pay Sony $180 to repair their error or count my losses and a new system. It's looking like the Dream systems are more of a nightmare. Don't buy it.

Summary: I feel rather fortunate then...
Review: Fortunate to have come upon such a nice system, firstly, but also because I've had none of the problems reported by others.

I went shopping 3 weeks ago for a new entertainment system; I knew I was getting a Sony WEGA, but didn't know what kind of sound system I would pair it with. I'm a novice in all this, so I was hoping to by a respectable all-in-one unit to last me the next couple years.

A sales associate recommended this one as being the "best for the money". It was more expensive than I'd initially wanted to pay ...but has a $100 rebate. I'm so glad I invested in it! Overall performance has been wonderful, from playing CDs to watching DVDs to regular t.v. The different acoustic settings work pretty well and there seem to be several features that are typically only seen on higher-end systems.

The only two [minor] complaints I do have are: (1) It's true that the remote buttons are irritatingly small; (2) The disc changing process seems to take an inordinately long amount of time. (Or am I simply impatient?)

So I'm happy with it so far. I've rated it 5 stars because I have no reason to rate it lower... it's better than no surround at all, which was my situation previously. Oh, and it's very stylish next to the WEGA.

Summary: Great System - Tons of Features
Review: Great looking and sounding system.
Loads of features.
Plays every format imaginable, DVD Video, DVD Audio, CD, SACD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW.
I got this system for my bedroom and could not be happier.
The remote is very cool, I call it the "Phillip Stark" remote.

Summary: Excellent...when it works.
Review: I am experiencing the exact same issues with this system as the previous reviewer. Trying to work with Sony to get these resolved. Unfortunately for me, I didn't begin using the system until roughly the end of the 30 day period in which I had a window to return it to my local retailer. Now I'm compelled to work through warranty services. If enough of us are experiencing these defects, Sony should take the responsible route and satisfy its customers. I've called the local "authorized Sony Service Centers" and none of them seem to be responsive to this issue or are otherwise backed up with repairs that they do not feel compelled to deal with this.

Summary: Sounds great, when it works.
Review: I bought and took back this system 3 times. When it worked it was absoulutely incredible. In all three, the subtitles kept coming on in the middle of movies. Drove me nuts. The progressive scan and sound was superb. The first one: on occasion the video would go out while watching a dvd, just turning it off and on again made it work again but it was a pain. The subtitles always came on, after turning them off, over and over again so we exchanged it. The second one: was better with the subtitles. They would only come on once or twice during the movies. The problem with the second one was it would reset itself from component output/progressive scan to interlace. We had to hook it up differently to reset it back to progressive scan. We took it back and tried it one more time. The third one only worked for 4.5 hours before it died alltogether. No power, just went completely dead. It worked great for the 4.5 hours but again the subtitles did come on during the movies. Just too many bugs in this model. It was great when it was working. I'm even tempted to buy it again just to see if I can find one with no flaws! We even bought all the recommended surge protectors and cables but it did no good.

Summary: Do Not Buy This System, Unless You Want Trouble!
Review: I bought Sony because I trusted the name...seemed like a good price and good value. DVD started skipping and failing within a few months after purchase. We only used it 1-2 times a week. We thought it was because it was overheating and wasn't getting enough ventilation.

Now, 18 mo.'s later, the DVD fails and the changer won't even read a disc - you can't even insert one. I started two chats with Sony and no one admits to a problem or need for a recall. After reading similar reviews, I realized Sony knows they have a problem, but since it happens out of warranty, it's not their issue.

Consumer, beware!

Summary: Excellent entry-level system
Review: I carefully researched home theater systems priced between $200 and $600 before choosing the Sony DAV-C770 and I have been very pleased with the purchase. It is incredibly easy to hook up (hooray for color-coded, long wires!), it provides quality sound for this level of product (especially the Super Audio CDs - wow!), and is easily the most stylish product in this price range. I had heard about the subtitle problem that plagued early models but learned from a review that they had been fixed late last fall and I can report that I've had no problems. Some reviewers have griped about the small buttons on the controller, which is understandable. They're small, but you get used to them. I've yet to find many audio-video controllers that I actually like, quite frankly. As for the issue of the rear speaker sound being too quiet, this is rectified by properly adjusting the speaker settings using the manual. It's not difficult. I set the subwoofer to +2 and the rear speakers to +6 with great results. Unless you're planning on using this in a large room, the sound should be plenty powerful enough. I have only two complaints: no DVD-Audio capacity (although I knew this) and it would be nice to have an additional sound input. That said, the connectivity is acceptable overall and the SACD capability is a nice bonus. This one is a winner, especially since I picked it up online for more than $100 below its list price.

Summary: Finally, somewhere I can 'vent'.
Review: I hate this P.O.S. - The disc changer is 'god-awful' slow to prep and eject (agonizingly). NO way to know which bay the DVD you want is in on the first try. Load time is also way-slow. My $30 cheapy DVD player recognizes more disc types and file types (jpg, avi, wmv, etc.) than the DAV-C770. The Remote is a joke - small, and too many, buttons with even smaller print. It only has two fast-forward speeds (2X and 3X) The only reason I use it is for the 5.1, otherwise (for kids movies) I use the $30 cheapy.
The Tuner and Aux ports are fine and I use the Optical to play tunes from my computer (pretty cool).

Summary: DAV-C770
Review: I have mixed feelings about my new DAV-C770. The pros: The overall sound upgrade from my old (non-surround sound) system is a major improvement. The sound quality is excellent and the five disc CD/DVD player is a major bonus not found in many systems this size and at this amount. Now the cons: DO NOT BE MISLEAD, 90 watts a channel as a crock. I'm not sure who does the ratings for Sony but a corporate calibration of all equipment they use to measure output wattage is way over due. My old 45 watt Yamaha will spank this little component right in the amp and never look back. If you're looking for a small relatively inexpensive system with good sound, this is your unit. If you occasionally want to mix it up with the guys and rock the house, save the embarrassment and buy something else. My C770 still has that new toy smell ...
