Summary: 6 miles huh?
Review: 6 miles is not happening. Not three and not even 1 for me while inside my house and my wife in a car. Granted there is interference from the engine and my house but she didn't even get 1/2 mile away and the signal was gone. We use them in Lowes and Wal-Mart when we go our separate ways and they are fine but don't expect to talk at any distance. We did pick up a conversation from a fire truck in front of us once. There is an FCC statement about getting a license to use these and that is not realistic at all. They should not sell them for $20 as walkie talkies if you need a license.

Summary: cool toys
Review: I use these on a daily basis in Mexico. We have lots of trees so we never see the 7 mile range, more like maybe 1, but on the open highway they absolutely wonderful. If you have a line of site you are in good shape. I would recommend these units tp anyone, they do not have all the options like the Voice activation, but for the price is is a well worth deal.

Summary: Great product!
Review: My husband bought these for our teenage son and his friend to use at the farm, which is in a low lying area surrounded by hills where reception is notoriously bad. The boys had a great time all day, moving around and using them in open fields, on the hills and in wooded areas, staying well within 2 miles of each other. Programming was easy and voices came through clearly wherever they were. They were interested only talking back and forth and didn't try the more complex features. My husband was so impressed with this set that he bought another pair as a backup and I'm going to buy at least 2 more pairs as Christmas gifts. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because we haven't tested all the features yet.

Summary: Great Talkie for the price
Review: People who talk about having only 1 mile of range on their talkie don't really understand the way Radio Waves work. All GMRS and FRS radios are on the 462mhz band, what that means to the avg user is that it's pretty much line of site. If you can see the person you will be able to talk to them. Now you will be able to have about a mile or so of trees things like that in between you and the other person. If you have hills and valleys between you and the person you are trying to talk too, you will have problems hearing them if the hill or mountain is between you and them. At this frequency radio waves don't bend much at all, that's why it's going to be line of sight. Power will help somewhat a 1watt talkie won't have the range that a 3watt one has, but it's not going to be very much in terms of distance.

People who say this talkie or that talkie works better just by range aren't explaining what their test conditions are, so you have no idea what is between them and the other person. If you wanted to compare radios like this....you have to have other radios in the test also, you can't tell anything from just one set / brand of radios in this kind of test.

Simple rule for gmrs/frs radios, if you can see the general area the other person is you should be able to talk to them. If one of you is elevated your range will increase dramatically. That's why they put tv/radio towers on hills and mountains. One mile is typical range for almost all gmrs radios that are transmitting 500mw to 1watt. This same one watt would be just as good if you were 10 miles apart and able to see the area where the other person is.

It's not the wattage that is important, for gmrs radios, it's the feature set on each radio that should be the main draw to a particular radio, not just someone saying I can talk only 1 mile with this radio.
