Summary: Does not play nice with other analog phones
Review: The AT&T 955 is a pack animal - they work best with their own kind or their cousin, the 964 (wth answerer). We have a mix of AT&T, Uniden and V-Tech multi-line analog phones at our small office, and found the following problems:

1) Calls placed on hold at the 955 and picked up at another extension do not clear the on-hold indicator and the phone bleeps on-hold warnings even though another extension has already taken the call. Further, once the call is terminated, the 955 does not register the fact, and holds the line open, forcing you to return to the 955 and physically hang up.

2) The 955 would tie the lines together unexpectedly. Pick up Line 1, and Lines 3 and 4 would light (and yes, we triple-checked our premise and LEC wiring for problems!).

In conclusion - In for a penny, in for a pound. Buying an AT&T 955 or 964 means going exclusively with that product for your office. That's just not flexible enough for us.

Summary: Almost great...but getting really bad
Review: This phone has a lot of great features like a 2.5 mm headset input and 4 lines.

There are three negatives:

(1) The phone is black. Nothing else on my desk is totally black so it stands out. Why not a dove gray or something similar?

(2) The dialing buttons are very small. The phone has plenty of room for bigger buttons but for some reason AT&T went with little buttons. Why? Clearly, morons were hard at work to screw something up this simple.

(3) The caller-ID display should be tilted up so you can see it better. As it is now, you have to lean up to look down at the phone so you can see the caller-ID.

Otherwise, a good phone for the price.

EDIT as of 7/28/03: I have owned this phone now for a number of months and I can tell you that the poor quality is starting show through. For example, sometimes when I press one of the line buttons, 2 or more of the other lines will come on as well!! I have to unplug the electrical power cord to reset the system so it will let me dial out on just one line but sometimes that trick doesn't work either. I'm starting to regret having bought this phone.

Summary: all the features I need -- and they work
Review: This telephone has the feature set I wanted and is completely satisfactory in each regard. Those features are: 1) multi-line [4], 2) speaker phone, 3) headset jack, 4) mute [handset, speaker, headset], 5) caller id [all lines]. It attaches to the wall with two cords, two lines in each cord. Sound quality is excellent with handset and speaker. The overall "feel" is quality construction. This phone set is designed to be used with other similar models, with the ability to transfer calls, etc. I have not used those features.

Summary: They work well but are not perfect
Review: We bought 2 phones for our home office on march 23. 2004. The 2 phones have been returned 7 times. Today, we will get full credit from Staples for the phones:

Problems 964: Bad handset . New unit actually was a repakaged unit in the box with a factory seal. Caller ID failed. Did not record calls. Had to reset numerous times. Got a replacement unit. This was a new factory sealed unit.

Seemed to work fine. tried to use the conference feature tieing 2 lines together. Put a loud hum in the lines so no one could talk or hear.

Problems 955 Seemed to work fine out of box. After 1 week. the speakerphone failed. Everytime used, had a loudfeedback noise into the line in use. Replaced phone. New phone had caller ID failures.

( When I was at the store doing a swap, ran into another customer who was also having problems. These phone are pure garbage. For an analog multiline phone, these are the
WORST I have ever owned..
Replaced with used Nortel Venture 3 line phones. Work great..

AT&T needs to take their name of this equipment. It is made by American Advanced Telephones..

Summary: Flat out....these phones suck!!!!
Review: We purchased 3 of the AT&T 955 phones for a small business. After about a week, they all have had their quircky problems.

1. One of the handsets broke, luckily they actually sent me a new one.
2. Occassionally when you pick up line 1 line 3 lights up (seems to be a common problem).
3. The lines "hum" periodically. After contacting the trouble shooting desk, they recommend I get the jack replaced,well, it still does it.
4. They do not work well with cordless phones, the lines do not release, unless you do it manually.

I am in the process of returning these and getting something else, they ARE NOT DEPENDABLE.
