Summary: Not the best
Review: Having had good luck with GE phones in the past, I took a chance on this model when I needed a business phone. Unfortunately, my string of good fortune ran out.

The GE 29438GE2 is not a bad phone, but neither is it what I hoped. The positives are many:

1) Attractively designed and solid feeling.

2) Large buttons and keypad.

3) Sure feeling to the keys.

4) Good sound. Reproduces voices nicely both in the handset and the speakerphone.

5) LCD display is easy to read, with large numbers.

But there are a few damning negatives:

1) The battery seems to drain rapidly, even with the unit plugged in. A dead battery means you lose your presets if the main power goes out. Very annoying.

2) The flash is not lengthy enough and will not always get you back to a dial tone with a single push. (This is a problem with many phones, though.)

3) Bleed between lines. You can sometimes hear what is happening on the other line, as will the person calling. This is clearly inexcusable.

4) Volume control is spotty.

5) Cannot seem to adjust the sensitivity of the VOX. Likes to cut out if the background noise in the room rises even a little. (This seems to be an issue with all GE speakerphones.)

In summary, this is only a fair phone when compared with other models out there.

Skip.

Summary: GE 29438GE2 Two Line Deluxe Speaker Phone
Review: I have actually owned several of this model. The main problem I've had with them is the speaker failing after 6 to 8 months. It's possible that the device that controls the voice one way at a time fails. I think it's called the VOX. It's suppose to prevent feed back while using the speaker. I have found the phone to work well when it's working. The styling is nice, the features are suffient for a small office. But, be expected to replace in a year. I tried one of those replacement contracts one time, man what a pain in the neck. I'll never do that again.

Summary: Disappointed
Review: I have many GE phones, and I have had the most problems with this one. I had to send in my first one for repairs, and they sent me a second one. I got the second one back, and it still didn't work. I am very disappointed in this product.

Summary: Great styling, but not real reliable
Review: I have purschased several of this model and have had to replace all of them for various problems. I've had people on the receiving end say that they couldn't hear me. I've had the volume of the dial tone drop out when beginning a call. People can't hear you well unless you're standing close to the speaker. I also have experienced interference between the 1st and 2nd lines. If someone is dialing out on the 2nd while you're on the 1st, you can hear them. If you place a cell phone to close to it ,you will pick up the transponder signal from the cell which identifies it. When I first purschased the phones they seem to work well, but after a while they started developing bugs. I've had to replace most within a year. But , I do like the styling, and features for a small office.

Summary: A very solid desk phone
Review: I needed a two-line desk phone for my home office, and this one is working out very nicely so far. Its sound quality surpasses many phones I've used in corporate settings, and its handset is a nice weight -- not cheap-feeling. It works well in speaker mode, and I'm also enjoying using it with a Plantronics headset I purchased. On top of all this, the phone looks good. If it displayed caller ID, I'd rate it a "5." But at this price, I'm still very happy with it!

Summary: Another GE loser
Review: My old GE phone was buggy, and the fix -- doing a re-set with batteries removed -- required me to restore the pre-sets at least a dozen times over a few years. So far, bugs plaguing this nice-looking and functionally rich replacement have caused me to lose the pre-sets twice in the three days I've had it. There is no key-tone adjustment, so the phone beeps at you when you press a button to get a line, and it beeps some more when you punch in a 10-digit number. GE tech support said this is a bug, but they are wrong, since the replacement I picked up yesterday at Best Buy does the same thing. Also, I have been unable to wring the ringer and cross-talk bugs out of the two-line function. The problem is attributable to the fact that the input jacks for lines 1 & 2 require a 2-line coupler, rather than allowing the user to simply plug each of two wall lines into separate 1&2 phone-input jacks.

The phone has decent heft and a nice finish, but the touch of the buttons is too firm for my taste. I am hoping GE's tech support can resolve at least some of the bugs, since alternative choices in this category are relatively meager.

Summary: Not user friendly for troubleshooting
Review: My power cord has gone out within one month of getting the phone. It now eats up 1 battery every 2 days. It won't ring or the buttons don't work unless it has power. I am having to send it back. I personally wouldn't buy this phone, but unfortunately, my corporate office did.

Summary: great phone
Review: nice phone.
it does NOT have caller ID
It needs to be plugged in to ring. That's about the only negative point.
You can select which line is shared with a modem or fax (I don't use this as i have dsl, but it could be useful.)
Speakerphone works well.
Great value overall.

Summary: Speaker Phone Problems
Review: Serious problem. The volume buttons do not function properly. In the middle of a conference call on speakerphone, the volume goes straight to it highest settting. Pushing the down volume button doesn't do anything. The reset option also does not work. However, sometimes it does work. I find that that this happens many many times. I really liked this phone until this unreliable feature is one. SO dissapointed, as I bought it for the speakerphone. May be a result of not using batteries as hinted at in the previous reviews. I am taking my phone back today. Can't anyone make a quality product anymore? This is ridiculuous.
