Product Info Reviews

Description:

As the priciest model in Acer's affordable TravelMate 240 series of portable computers, the TravelMate 240 (TM244LCi) offers some unique advantages. Its processor, for example, is relatively quick even when compared to some current state-of-the-art CPUs, yet quite cost-effective because it's based upon slightly older technology. Furthermore, the system is markedly more capable and versatile than most other 240 series machines, though only fractionally more expensive. Wirelessly equipped and comfortably portable at 13.1 by 11.6 by 1.6 inches and 7.4 lbs, the TravelMate 240 (TM244LCi) is a good bet for budget-minded consumers who need a little more than jump than a typical entry-level notebook can provide.

Driven by a 2.6 GHz Intel Celeron processor, 256 MB of RAM memory and an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 video controller with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory, the TravelMate 240 (TM244LCi) won't set any speed records. It is, however, ready for most typical home, home office and light-duty business tasks. A video controller with dedicated memory rather than shared memory would be preferred, yet that would substantially drive up the cost. As it is, the unit will efficiently display older and less complex 3D games and applications.

At 40 GB, the system's hard disk is satisfactory for storing a flock of applications and files but not spacious enough for those who also want to maintain a large multimedia library. The enclosed DVD/CD-RW drive will allow you to burn audio files to CD, archive data and watch DVD movies, but doesn't support DVD burning. Unlike the 14-inch display found on lesser TravelMate 240 series notebooks, the TravelMate 240 (TM244LCi) features a large, bright 15-inch XGA TFT viewing screen capable of 1024 by 768 resolutions.

Connectivity options are quite reasonable. To help you communicate with the outside world, Acer has added a standard 56K dial-up modem, a high-speed 10/100 LAN connection for fast network interaction, and an 802.11b Acer InviLink wireless LAN for those times when you just can't plug in. Other key amenities include four fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, an 84-key keyboard with programmable touchpad, and support for simultaneous display on the notebook screen and an external monitor. A FireWire port, normally used for fast data downloads from digital camcorders, is not part of the package.

Under ideal conditions, battery life expectancy is average at 2.5 hours.
