Summary: A great little laptop
Review: I've had my iBook 700 MHz for about a month now. I bought it to replace a PowerBook G4 400 MHz. I liked my previous PowerBook, but I was disappointed in a few things. The airport range was poor and the battery life was less than I would have liked. The iBook has very good battery life, excellent airport range, a small footprint, it's lighter than the PowerBook and more durable as well. Speed is very good for most programs and the screen (although small) is very bright and easy on the eyes. Overall, all I'm very pleased with the iBook.

Summary: PC Hardware Fan is a Troll!
Review: Listen Troll, the iBook comes in two screen sizes 12.1" if you want max portability and 14.1" if you prefer a bigger screen. You don't want Apple to succeed you are just bashing the product blindly. The G3 chip is really more than adequate for the needs of the target audience of the iBook. If you need more power than this go for the Titanium Powerbook G4.
With that said, most iBook owners prefer the 12.1" as I do. And by the way, I have compared the iBook to similarly priced IBM products and Dells and I still prefer it! IBM and Dell PCs are either equal in hardware or have less memory, inferior graphic chips (iBook has 16MB, they often have 8MB) and even smaller hardrives. There is not enough space here to prove how big of a troll you are!

Summary: The best consumer notebook out there, period.
Review: Please ignore the people who write review here based on the specs - once you use the product, you see past them.

The major features of this notebook I love:
12.1" Screen - I love it. It packs 1024x768 into a small area, with a very high, crisp DPI.
OS X - The best operating system on the market, with the strong UNIX base, the best software for multimedia, and everything any consumer - or professional, for that matter, could want.
Form factor - It is an extremely small form factor, and can fit on an airplane tray table comfortably. It is easy to slip into a bag without hindering your portability.
Battery Life - You can easily watch a three hour DVD. Great battery life.
Case - This thing can withstand a drop from several feet. The plastic in the casing is very durable, and looks real good.

Features I don't like:
G3 Processor - Apple only offers the G3 in the iBook, simply to keep the costs down. It is an outdated architecture, and is not suited to heavy photoshop or video work. The G4's velocity engine is much more suited to this task.
640 MB Max RAM - I'd like to see two free RAM slots, instead of one and 128 MB integrated into the motherboard. 1 GB of RAM really helps performance in OS X.
Warranty - Even the AppleCare plan doesn't seem enough. I would like a warranty similar to Dell's CompleteCare, which covers minor drops and accidental damage. The base warranty is not too good, 90 day tech support, 1 year parts.

If you're in the market for a comsumer notebook, and don't do too much heavy Photoshop or video editing, this is the best notebook out there. The case will take abuse, and can easily be put in a student's backpack without worries (except from people stealing it because it looks so sexy).

Summary: Display is too small, CPU is too weak
Review: Sorry but a 12" display is too small for anything other than very occasional use. Considering you can get a 14.1" screen for less than this from IBM, Dell, or Toshiba (along with a much better CPU) there is no reason to suffer through this serious mistake from Apple.

If you are in love with the Mac OS then spend the money and get a bigger screen and a G4 (a G3 is a pretty anemic CPU). If you don't believe me go down to a CompUSA and set this next to a Mac or PC notebook with a 14" or 15" display. Imagine staring at it for hours. You will thank me later.

Summary: Small screen, weak CPU - look elsewhere
Review: Stuck between an overpriced Powerbook and a under featured iBook Apple is robbing consumers. Before you buy this system at least compare the screen to larger, better screens on cheaper HPs, Compaqs, Sonys, etc... They will also sport faster CPUs, more memory, large hard drives, better graphics, etc...

Man, I really want Apple to do well, and I hate Microsoft as much as the next guy, but these features and prices don't add up. Apple needs to wake up and smell the coffee. They are making a killing off of these because they cost Apple 1/10 to buy these laptop compared to what they charge (they are made by the same Asian companies who build for Dell, Gateway, HP, etc...).

It is insane that they charge so much because if they asked a fair price they would sell millions. Oh well, this is why Apple is a niche product and Apple struggles to stay solvent every couple of years.

Summary: Regretting this purchase
Review: The rating of the product may be slightly paradoxical to the comment review I write to you out there but I have to be honest and bear all. The ibook is a superb bit of equipment. The display and handling, though diametrically opposed to the PC, is quite user friendly. I only have the ibook in my hands approximately 4 weeks and have not explored all the stuff it has to offer. I have no doubt that it would have provided me with much pleasure and interest for a good while to come... but there is a but.

This is the dilemma with which I'm faced. I need a refund or quick resale on this computer to purchase a notebook that uses the windows operating system. Reason being is that everything I have had to interface with in Jamaica uses the windows platform. Anywhere I go...at a conferences and in the working environment I find myself struggling to keep up with the pace of the windows environment. If I'm trying to get my ibook to open files sent to my inbox saved in 'MS word' format I can't open it; if I am trying to view PPT it just won't work; if I am trying to browse with apple's explorer I won't be able to open files or attachments not formatted for apple's OS... I think at this point you are beginning to get the picture.

The Apple ibook is like a peice of expensive handcraft in a glass showcase that can't be used for anything in my situation except for public viewing and not for hardcore business usage. Take me back to the mundane and the ordinary until everybody catches up! I need a refund or replacement for a Dell or Sony or something like that! I am most miserable... HELP!

Summary: Very Happy With iBook!!
Review: This is a great CONSUMER portable. Great for the average person like me running the typical software like surfing the web, e-mail, office documents, burning CD's and yes using Photoshop... Don't however expect the performance numbers of a dual G4 PROFESSIONAL level desktop. That's not what the iBook is for. I would suggest purchasing 3rd party RAM. The 128M is really the bare minimum. Do some research to make sure you know what exactly your getting with whatever computer your thinking of buying. I lurked in Apple's iBook disussion forum for months before I bought mine and couldn't be happier with my purchace.

Summary: A wonderful machine
Review: This is a wonderful computer. I bought one for my wife, and then decided I had to have one for myself. And after 'defecting' to the PC world for a few years, it's great to finally have a Mac again.

Apple's attention to detail is superb, right down to the packaging the computer ships in. Setup is a cinch, and the OS X interface is as intuitive as it is gorgeous. The monitor is extremely bright, and the colors are crisp and clear. The keyboard is moderately-sized, and very comfortable to type on. The trackpad is glossy-smooth, so the cursor glides right along--not stuttering like so many laptops.

Performance is quite snappy, though the computer definitely benefits from adding extra RAM (it's cheap, and easy to install). Consider this a workhorse, not a racehorse. If you need to run a dozen Adobe applications simultaneously, you will likely be frustrated with this machine. Buy a G4. For everyday computing, though, the iBook is excellent.

The one-year warranty is short; I recommend buying the AppleCare extended warranty. My wife did call Apple for support and was extremely impressed by the level of service she received. In fact, the technician has called back twice to follow-up and make sure that everything is working properly.

It's simply a pleasure to use. Enjoy!

Summary: Excellent Mac for price
Review: This is an excellent Macintosh computer for anyone in school or who would need a smaller sized laptop for travel. This is ideal for toting to meetings for PowerPoint presentations. Macintoshes cannot be beat for reliability when you need your computer to perform for your presentations!
Otherwise the 12" screen is a bit small, and I would definitely recommend spending the extra money on the 14.1" screen iBook. I also highly recommend adding in a bit extra memory and getting the 30MB hard drive if you'll be doing any video work or serious multitasking. I have a CD-RW/DVD combo drive in mine which I also enjoy.
