Summary: Great Performance at Right Size & Weight
Review: A great notebook with the right balance of capability, size and weight. Perfect for travel even though I am happy using it as my main machine at my home office.
Compared to other notebooks of this size (such as Apple PowerBook 12") heat generation is not a problem, even with some heavy use of Photoshop.

Summary: It's fair but there is a problem with the touch-mouse
Review: After 3 months using it, I found that the touch mouse was acting like crazy. When I called the technicians at Sony, they told me it is a typical problem on 505.

I sent the notebook for touch-mouse replacement and took less than week to get it back. (I live in Great LA and the service center is in San Diego)

I have no complaint on Sony service center, but after 2 months of using the notebook, there are some symptoms that I will probably have the same problem soon.

Summary: Beware...V505 not ready for Prime Time
Review: As a Sony loyal type I must say I was rather impressed with the V505BX features (vibrant screen, stylish looks, wireless NIC, etc.) It soon became apparent that this laptop has an incessant and inadvertent mind of its own. The touchpad is very buggy and uncooperative, and clicks backward, forward, up, down, sideways (you get the idea)...After reading that other reviewers had similar issues I also noticed the keyboard was not seated very well in its basin. One side of the keypad seems more elevated than the other. (very strange)... As a courtesy, first I sent it to the Sony service site to let them try to fix it. The support rep said they were aware of the touchpad and clicking issue. When I got it back from Sony repair (quickly, which is good), the keypad problem was not any better, and the buggy touchpad was improved, but definately not resolved. O.K. as I said, I like Sony products and want to give it a fair shake..., I then exchanged it for another one (crossing my fingers this experience was not to be repeated)....no such luck! The replacement is far buggier than the first... clicking on it's own! I'm returning this one and wating on the sidelines until I can confirm Sony has fixed it's "false start" on an otherwise well-designed laptop. Truly a disappointment!

Summary: Nice feats, poor quality?
Review: As others have said, nice machine, but the mousepad is quirky on mine too. Support and quality do not seem to be hallmarks of Sony Vaios....I'll be returning mine for a full refund (only had a couple days).

I'll probably buy IBM...have had many thru work, and they are almost always rock solid (if pricey).

Summary: They sell a lot of these in Kalamazoo
Review: C'mon, one review per buyer, you aren't fooling anyone.

Actually, I'd take you more seriously with the first review than I do now that I see you playing games...

Summary: WHAT IS UP WITH THE TOUCHPAD!!!!!
Review: Don't buy this notebook computer. When typing the cursor jumps, WITHOUT WARNING, to some other spot in the document. I type roughly 90 words a minute. When I do decide to look up at what I am typing, I see that it is ruined. The touchpad on my Vaio does not work AT ALL! I wish I had read these other reviews before I purchased it or shortly thereafter. I would have quickly returned it for a refund. I was forced to purchase a wireless mouse to use since the touchpad doesn't function. This thing is garbage!

Summary: Sony Vaio PCG V505BX Laptop Review
Review: I am a computer programmer. This Laptop is small and has a lot of feature, but the video card only has 16 megs of rams. Which make you can not do anything with high graphical operation.
My friend bought 1 of this laptop. She had reinstall another version of Win XP Pro. The Win XP keep freeze randomly. The freeze problem occur, because the video card rams are not enough to run Win XP with high graphical performace. So I don't really suggest this laptop to anybody, except people using this laptop to run linux or other os' without graphical interface

Summary: No what I would expect from Sony
Review: I bought this computer in July of 2003. After three months, I finally tried the DVD player and found that it didn't function. I then discovered that it is built-in, so the entire laptop has to be replaced. The service center was less then helpful in providing well-thought out solutions.

I have sought advice through a newsgroup at my company and it turns out that others have had the same problem with older models with similar poor results in terms of solutions.

Now I see the reviews accompanying mine and must point out how unhappy I am with this product and Sony's ability to properly rectify the problem.

Summary: This is a great small laptop.
Review: I bought this laptop as a replacement for a nearly 7lb. Dell laptop. I bought it because it was lightweight (a tad over 4lbs), small, and easily portable and it was inexpensive. For computationally intensive stuff, I use my desktop. I take this Sony with me when I give demos, and presentations, work during a flight, or when I just want to get out of my office and sit somewhere nice and get some basic work done. After years of lugging big laptops around, this Sony is a joy to tote around!
It is more than adequate for what I use it for: basic office applications (the OpenOffice equivalents of Word, Excel, PowerPoint); I demo web applications using Xitami, PHP, Python, and MySQL; I watch DVDs & listen to MP3s, and sync w/ my iPod using the builtin FireWire. It works great! Unlike one reviewer, I've had absolutely no problem running Windows XP. I've had no freezes or lockups. I've had no mechanical problems either. I agree with the reviewer who said it would be nice to have an S-video out. I weighed the lack of one into my decision, but I thought that what this laptop offered outweighed the lack of s-video. One review I saw online mentioned that the keyboard was poor--very little key travel and the layout being poorly designed. I haven't had any problems with this but I would advise any interested buyers to test this out at a store first to see if they find the keyboard difficult to use. The other laptop I was considering was the Apple 12" powerbook.
