Summary: Great desktop replacement machine
Review: I recently bought the Satellite P15-S409 and I'm very happy with it so far. The system configuration is excellent, the screen size and picture definition are very good, and the price beats most competing brands offering the same features. I considered buying the Dell 8600 which is a great machine too but the Toshiba P15 offered the 2.8GHz Pentium IV processor with HT, a SD memory card slot, and an extra USB2 port which is always useful.
There are only 3 issues with the P15 that if corrected would make of this a kick ass laptop: Replace XP Home with the Pro version, improve the sound system, and make it a little less bulky.
Other than that, the Toshiba P15 is a great buy and will most likely satisfy the needs of demanding users like myself.

Summary: Istanbul Turkey Support + Bad DVD/CD Burner NOW at depot
Review: I sincerely wish I had read the reviews HERE before I bought my Toshiba P15-S409 notebook PC.
Almost immediately after purchase on 2/4/04, the DVD Multi Drive failed, and unfortunately I was just over the 14-day Best Buy return period. Faced with getting it fixed, I was PROMISED by support (in Istanbul Turkey)that with "Depot" repair -- PROMISED that I would have it back, fixed, within 5 DAYS. As of today, 12 days, later, it sits in depot repair and the web status report says the repair is "ON HOLD" waiting for a backordered replacement DVD/CD drive. Complaints to their service people (also in Turkey) yield "canned" replies on the phone, polite, but completely unable to "escalate" to a US-based supervisor. They absolutely refuse to replace this BRAND-NEW MACHINE with another one.
Upon repair, I will put this machine up on E-bay and chalk it up as a bad mistake. Never again, will I ever, I repeat, ever buy a Toshiba product EVER again. Why don't these companies have a clue? Not only do they remove jobs from the US but they get really negative customer feelings, from poor support. My next letter will be to PC World "on your side".

Summary: Taking a chance from Argentina
Review: It took me a long time to decide which Toshiba notebook model to chose. I had an old model Toshiba notebook that rendered excellent service through four years and I never thought of replacing it with any other brand notebook.
The P15-S409 has been an excellent choice. It is a very good combination of a relatively lower price with every service needed.
Wireless, DVD burner, an excellent 15.4" widescreen, an incredibly fast start up and downloading. There is practically no time delay in the printing process.
I use it for my business replacing my previous desk PC with
excellent results because it has a very easy to handle keyboard.
I took a big chance being from Argentina as I had the Toshiba sent by air freight. But a good packaging brought me a perfect working unit. As a matter of fact, Toshiba has a good service unit in my country. This is a highly recommendable notebook.

Summary: Toshiba support stinks
Review: Just bought the P15-S409. So far so good. Until I called support in Istanbul Turkey. Polite but only capable of telling me official Toshiba policies and not caring about actually solving the problem. To quote them: "Toshiba does not support upgrades from XP Home to Pro". Well gee, I guess I'll throw this computer away and buy a new one. Nothing like having a product represented by a third party that doesn't give a.

Summary: review for toshiba sat. 17" widescreen
Review: overall the computer is a great buy. everyone was like who that is a big screen. after a while you get used to it and you love it. and so do they. 2.8 ghz is amazing and the hard drive is the perfect size for any gamer, or business man/woman. the only problem i had and still have is finding a carrying case for it. again it is a great computer for anyone.

Summary: Good and Bad
Review: The system as such has excellent performance. When compared to other laptops I would say it has blazzing speed and performance. the main drawbacks of this system are low battery and very high heat. The cooling fans are below and if the laptop is placed on a cushion surface it heats up like hell and shuts down. If there are ways to increase the height of the system just like what sony vaio gives foldable stands. I hope toshiba reads this and makes some arrangement for me.

Summary: Very Happy
Review: This is a great notebook for all my applications. I even got great customer support when I messed up some settings. I got this to be able to more seemlessly have my work files available for those inspirational moments. It worked great out of the box and is actually better than my work PC. Not bad for most games either. Beautiful screen. Get one now for an upgrade!

Two points have been brought up that should be addressed.

1. There is a workaround to upgrade to XP Pro on the Microsoft web site. I've not done this yet but it is nice to know it can be done. It involves shutting off a couple of apps, loading the system, and turning them back on. The Toshiba script kitties are not qualified to tell you the details. Do a google search!

2. For it's price this laptop stands up well. The next computer in this line I would buy costs at least $2K, and I shopped hard and long before selecting this model.

This is not the top of line laptop for all purposes. It does what I need (business apps, most games, graphics) for less money than I would have spent elsewhere. It's that benefit/cost ratio that got my attention. It just suits my immediate, and foreseeable, needs.

Summary: Toshiba with Best Buy is a winning combination
Review: This laptop is actually a service plan replacement for an almost 3 year old Toshiba laptop that I bought from Best Buy. It has been a challenge to find one since they are switching models right now and the s409 is no longer being made. I took a display home because I liked it so much, however since the display unit was damaged more than I thought and seemed have a malfunctioning DVD drive, I took it back. I managed to track some more down and will be picking up my laptop tonight. It has been 3-4 days since I brought the display unit back and I have been fiending for the machine ever since. As a programmer, I spend a lot of time at home on my computers. This machine will make that a pleasure from now on.

It is an entirely new breed of "desktop" replacement "laptops." If you need mobility over performance, this is definitely not the laptop for you. However, if you value performance or can tolerate the additional bulk, this laptop has to be on of the best ones out there.

The 15.4" wide screen makes everything about watching this laptop enjoyable. The screen as mentioned in another review is crisp and simply beautiful. The performance can't be understated.

I will note that I haven't had the laptop for any period of time, but those were my impressions after only 1 day with the laptop and I am arguably a software and hardware expert of sorts and a semi-retired gamer. :) This is a must have.

Summary: Terrible Tech Support
Review: Toshiba may make good products, but their support is the worst i have ever come across. They have lost my laptop for over a month now and do not care a lick about it. They're tech support team is in Turkey and they dont care a thing about anybody. They kept hanging up on me and refused to help me saying it will take some time. When i called back- no one knew anything and had zero updates. DO NOT BUY TOSHIBA PRODUCTS! Get a Gateway or Dell instead...two companies that actually care about their customers.

Summary: Good Laptop with some major problems
Review: Well, I bought this laptop for all the obvious reasons like the processor, wide screen, RAM etc...There is a basic flaw in the design....There are these 2 large fans that are located below the laptop..So when you place this on your lap, the hot air blows right onto your lap....Next when you place the laptop on a couch or a mattress, the cloth seem to block the fan and the machine gets superheated and powers down....So I called up support to fix this problem of powering down...They sent me a box to send the laptop to the depot after 10 days...and guess where your laptop gets fixed? At the UPS depot in KY by UPS guys....The guy uninstalled and reinstalled windows and sent it back to me...The overheating problem was never fixed...

TOSHIBA SERVICE AND SUPPORT STINKS

So if you buy this and if you have any problems take the laptop personally to the local service center and get it fixed.

The other problem that I have is this fan makes a very loud noice all of a sudden and then its back to normal...I think it is so annoying.
