Summary: You can't go wrong with this solid laptop.
Review: This laptop is exactly what I was looking for. It's extremely well-built, and I haven't had any problems at all with mine after four months use. The 14.1 inch active-matrix display is bright and the colors are vivid. It comes with plenty of ram and a decent-sized hard drive too. While this isn't a top-of-the-line laptop, it doesn't cost three times as much either. And while it won't run the latest 3D games, it will do everything else just fine. Well actually, come to think of it, I did load "Trainz", an excellent recent 3D model railroading simulator on it. I was stunned that it ran at all, but was really surprised that it ran at 30+ frames per second at 800 x 600 resolution (by the way, the default and maximum resolution for the computer is 1024 x 768). Now I can design and run my model trains wherever I go (a bonus is that Trainz does not require the CD to run the program). It's got just 8 megs video ram, but I'm amazed at how well it runs some older Windows games too. What initially sold me on the Toshiba brand was how nice the keyboard felt to use and how well the touchpad worked. Nonetheless, I do highly recommend getting one of the small optical USB mice that are available (mine's a Belkin and I like it). Touchpads are okay, but a real mouse is much much easier to use, and if you get an optical mouse, you can use your leg or any other surface to mouse on with no problems. The 1005-S157 comes loaded with Windows XP home edition. It was my first exposure to XP and I must say I love it. It's a very stable operating system, and when put together with this very stable and solid notebook, it's a wonderful combination. Battery life is on the short side however, but at about 2 hours of normal use, it is just fine for me. All-around an extremely nice value.

Summary: This is a great product!
Review: This product is great for the price, it is very fast, the 256MB really help; compared to different computers, with less. The DVD has great quality. I dont think there is anything wrong with this product. You should buy it if you are looking for a laptop but can't afford somehting like a Sony Viao or compaq.

Summary: El cheapo...
Review: Well, I must say I do not like this notebook and now I regret
I did not get just slightly more expensive HP or Dell.
What do I have against?

1. battery is NiMH - short life, less than 2 hours in a new
unit in my case! My 3 years old HP has over 3h battery time!

2. Toshiba does not give you Windows XP installation
CD - just some junk CDs which erase your harddrive
and install XP. If you got data on your drive
but you need to reinstall - you are [out of luck]
(Dell does give you normal installation CDs)

3. It looks ugly and cheap - this silver stuff really [stinks]
And even though screen is 14" , the notebook is longer and bulkier than most 14" notebooks - due to bad design.

4. ergonomics is very bad. speakers are in front so
ports are further. In addition 2 USBs are in back while only
one on the side and behind PCMCIA and speakers - really bad
and inconvenient. Also power is in the back - so you have to stand up to connect it - much worse than my last HP.
PS2 and serial ports are missing. I must say, this model
has the worst ports configuration I have ever seen in a notebook
(this is my 4th one). And internal speakers do [stink].
And internal microphone does not work for me at all.

5. docking bays have locks on the bottom (Dell and HP on the side) so you have to lift the machine to open any bay

6. no point stick and I hate touchpad which is oversensitive.
Often, when I type, my mouse goes in a random window,
very irritating.

7. BIOS is very poor - no options at all!
Even no fullscreen 640x480 option! I still use DOS
from time time to time and lack of this feature is very
inconvenient.

Honestly the only advantage is relatively low price
for modern hardware inside: CPU, graphics, memory.
But in time these things won't matter while the inconvenient
design will still [stink].

My previous notebook: HP Omnibook 4150 was far superior
in the design and convenience. Too bad I needed something
faster....

I guess my next notebook will be Dell or HP.
