Summary: Look what you get for the money!!!!
Review: ... .

First the goods...

Nice 14 inch screen- I compared this screen to other 14 inch models and it's a little below average when it comes to brightness but still a nice screen.

Built in CD/DVD- Watch your favorite DVD movies and listen to your favorite CDs right on your desktop

Decent sound level- I was suprised at how much sound these little speakers could let out. Also, it has an easy access sound controller at the front of the computer.

256 SDRAM- Nice amount of RAM. You'll be able to open many applications at once with this amount. I might get another 256 module since I'll be using some graphics programs.

1.5 GHZ Celeron- Well the Celeron may not be the fastest chip ever but 1.5 GHZ is a very fast processor speed. This thing is great at loading programs and applications at a very fast rate.

Battery Life- I got over 2 hours in the car on this thing. Very nice battery.

Now for the Bad things...

No CDRW or floppy drive- There's no way to save your data except for on your hard drive. You can't bring a document to another computer unless you do it online or buy external hardware. I might be buying an external ZIP drive to transfer data from this computer to my other.

3 USB ports is nice but no USB 2? I don't think they make any USB stuff anymore it's now all USB 2 cause it's like 20 x faster.

Those are my 2 major complaints. The keyboard seems a little cheap but it works great. Also, Is comes with Microsoft Works. It's an ok Word precessor but it stinks compared to Word. For the price I paid for this thing It's worth every penny. Toshiba is a great name. They claim they're the worlds leading laptop manufacturer. The reason I know is because it tells me everytime I load XP. If you can get this computer for under 700, GET IT!!!!

Summary: Don't let the price fool you.
Review: ...I was very disappointed. First, the design is the worst among the brands. Second, its display is not as good as the others also. Then I try the keyboard. When I pressed on one key, the whole keyboard goes down (I have never see any laptop as (inexpensively made) as this one)...

Summary: Great for the money
Review: Are there better notebooks? Sure

Are there better deals than this one with all the rebates? Maybe not. I paid $... after all was said and done! (Ok, some of my rebates haven't come back yet, but it hasn't been very long yet)

The only reason I'm not giving this notebook 5 stars is because it doesn't include a floppy or CD-RW. It wasn't that important to me, but 5 stars should be reserved for a perfect product.

-It doesn't get too hot. I've been programming on it for the last 3 hours while it sits on my lap and it's not even hot to touch.

-The battery does lose power comparibly fast, but I don't use it much. Usually I'm plugged into an AC outlet.

-The 20 gb hard disk is sufficient as is the 256 mb ram. You can upgrade the ram, I probably will.

I am happy with this system. It has a good display and I like the size (It's not that heavy, I've had notebooks that were heavier).

Summary: Worst Toshiba Laptop I ever used.
Review: before I bought this from Amazon.com
I have owned at least 3 toshiba laptops with great expriences.

However, this one is my nightmare.

I spent all sunday dealing with internet connections problem...
Now, I'm pretty sure Toshiba has messed up everything about NIC on this specific computer, I have to insert another Netgear FA410TX pcmcia NIC to get me connected to AT&T cable modem(via an 8-part soho hub/switch)...

I tried no only XP(home-edition, pre installed), but also Mandrake Linux 9.0 (reporting PCI collision 00:if:00 something...) couldn't bring-up the NIC whatsoever...

however, the reason I gave it 1star is because it's running fine on LAN(not TCP/IP, keep in mind, it's NetBIOS/IPX/SPX)....

tried both DHCP or fixed IP, neither is working... I have never bought any computer as stupid as this... Besides, I would give XP a firm 0star... cheers.

Summary: Good for Start Ups
Review: Everybody is talking about this computer is not good. But if you are an entrepreneur and cost conscious it is very important for having this abilities with a price range of $650-$750. I am using the system for a week I set it up easily I never had any problems with internet connections and warming problem is not a big issue becuase i never use my laptops on my knees. It can be somewhat noisy but now i can make my presentations easily. create my financial models more faster and reach my customers faster. If someone is technology freak why do not they go and buy something with $2000. If you buy something with $700 you will not except a 10/10 performance. And i am thankful to Toshiba and Amazon for helping me and my start up.

Summary: Here's the real skinny on the CPU and temperature...
Review: For all you people arguing over what is in this puppy and how hot it runs, here is the actual output of a couple of Linux commands:

$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 15
model : 2
model name : Mobile Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 1.50GHz
stepping : 7
cpu MHz : 1495.613
cache size : 8 KB
...snip...

$ cat /proc/notebook/temperature
CPU temperature: 57 C
Fan off temperature: 55 C

Fan speed 1 temperature: 60 C
Fan speed 2 temperature: 65 C
Fan speed 3 temperature: 93 C
Minimal temperature to set: 25 C
Maximal temperature to set: 95 C
Fan status: off

This is an ACPI-only notebook, so its a bit tricky to get Redhat 8.0 Linux installed on it. But we've got the process down now, so it only takes about 5-10 minutes more than usual to get it up and running. Not bad for 5 C notes.

Summary: Good value for money!
Review: Great value for your money if you find it under 600 including tax. It also has comes with a combo CDRW/DVD drive called S123 model. I you need CD-RW check out the S123 model, although its harder to find & costs more.

Lots of people claim its a mobile processor because programs like WCPUID say so. All these programs do is read a CPUID string in Intel processors. But Intel also makes many processors that they don't list on their website or public pricing sheets.

Go to google and search for "hybrid Pentium 4" or Pentium 4C, there a nice zdnet article about it. A P4C is neither a P4 nor a P4M, its a hybrid. It sells in HP & other laptops but you probably never hear or read P4C. But this doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Same goes with these hybrid Celeron in Toshiba low end models, neither desktop Celeron's nor mobile Celeron. Read Toshiba specs on their website, no where is "mobile celeron" mentioned. But I guess some people who own this will never agree that its not mobile celeron!

Finally I doesn't get hot only warm and 2 hrs of battery life is very respectable. PC1600 DDR RAM means it runs cooler than PC2100 DDR, Toshiba made the right decision here.

Nice laptop by Toshiba for a great price and all the basic features. No money wasted on bells & whistles like infrared, firewire, useless P4M or fancy decoration.

Review: I am very satisfied with my equipment.
I'm sorry I was told to fill my rebate offer out and receive my rebate within a certain length of time then read that this model was discontiued after that. What's your take on it?

Summary: Good enough for most users
Review: I bought this laptop based on following needs:
(1)Need to play DVD
(2)Performance (CPU, MEM, H/D) is good enough for everyday use (3)Simple design and look. I don't like fancy things.
(4)I do everything though network, so I don't really care USB, floppy or CD-RW. My high performance desktop takes care all these things.
(5)Can't be too expensive. In fact, my first choice was Fujisu S6110 which is much better. I gave up Fujisu S6110 finally because it costs more than twice.

From my one day experience with this new toy, it fits my requirement well.

I also noticed some problems:
(1)The harddrive is constantly making some noise even when it is idle. I am not sure if this is a general problem or just mine is bad. I would really appreciate it if somebody can let me know.
(2)The DVD drive is kind of shaky. I hope that it will last long enough.
(3)The case/keyboard is not as solid as older models.

Last note: I confirmed that Intel does NOT make 1.5G desktop celeron, so I think that it has a MOBILE CPU. The CPU/FAN is not noisy at all.
