Summary: Good features for the price
Review: I purchased this system a little over a year ago and have found it to be an excellent computer for my needs (student). I also bought it to serve as a movie computer that I keep connected to my TV (works great and even goes full screen on the TV automatically). My biggest praise for the system is the fact that it has been knocked off my TV twice, falling at least 4 feet to a hard spanish tile floor without any damage whatsoever (not even a scratch!). Even better, it was in the middle of playing a movie (reading it from the hard drive) and did not skip a beat when it fell.

As for problems, I have noticed a couple that can be annoying. First, the touchpad is kinda sensitive and takes just a little touch to register (which kinda sucks when you are typing away at 80 WPM and the cursor suddenly moves to another part of the document). Second, there is a heat issue that can cause the laptop to shut down in the middle of whatever it is doing, but only seems to happen when dust builds up in the fan or the fan is otherwise blocked. This can be alleviated by blowing the dust out every month or two with a can of air (reversing the air flow). Lastly, if you are looking to play games on this system as well, think again; the graphics card only has 16MB and is non-upgradeable. This is good for simple games like Civilization 3, but Unreal and others are a no-go.

Summary: great buy
Review: I read a lot of reviews and I kept coming back to this model of toshiba. A tech person at our school district recommended this brand to me over dell, hp. I am very pleased with my new purchase! The fan does get a little noisy at times, but I haven't taken it to a classroom yet to see if it matters. At home, I don't care. I am very pleased with the speed too. It is a bit heavy compared to some others out there but I don't mind. The 15" screen is great! I highly recommend everybody to look at all the reviews you can find to get all of the information you need before you buy. The amazon reviews were the best resource for me.

Summary: A Decent Laptop
Review: I received this computer as an early graduation present in early 2003, and have been fairly happy with it. The processor is a 2ghz P4, and handles anything you could want to do on a laptop very easily and efficiently. I also love the 15" display, which is actually very good for watching DVDs full screen.

One suggestion is that you also purchase a ram upgrade when buying this computer. The 256mb it comes with will probably due if you only intend to use MS Office and other similar applications, but if you're like me and burn CDs regularly with it an upgrade to 512mb would do you a lot of justice.

The video card can also be an issue if you plan on serious gaming with this laptop. With 16mb I can play HalfLife and its mods and Diablo II comfortably, but anything along the lines of EverQuest or UT will be a waste of your effort. It's not upgradable, so you might want to think twice before you buy with intentions to game.

Overall, for the price, I would definitely suggest this laptop. It is a bit heavy and clunky, but with a nice carrying bag it is still very portable, and works very well wireless.

On a related note, I have never had any issues with overheating in this laptop. It's been a year since I got it, and the only time it ever really overheats is when I run a lot of memory hog applications like KaZaa Lite. I regularly leave it on for days during large downloads and experience no trouble.

Summary: Long schmong
Review: I was compelled to buy this machine by all the reviews saying that it had a long battery life. First off, it only is long if you let it sit there and do nothing! I got 2hrs, 15 minutes just running a DVD. I got 2.5 hrs. running normal programs. The only nice thing about this laptop is the colors. It matched the mouse! I cannot even find a backup battery except from Toshiba for ... Well beyond the current prices. I would not waste my money on this computer again.

Summary: Toshiba Sucks!
Review: There are numerous complaints against Toshiba concerning this and other laptops that suddenly and unexpectedly cut off...for no reason. Although Toshiba is aware of the issue they are doing nothing to correct it. I've already been stuck with one of these "duds"...protect yourself and buy a HP or Compaq instead!

Summary: Toshiba Satellite 1905-S301 LCD Screen is terrible
Review: This laptap is very fast and I can't say anything bad about it except the quality of the LCD display is terrible. The colors are very washed out. You can play with all of the brightness settings and color settings but it does not correct the problem. On some software or web pages you cannot tell when the background is highlighted in grey because of the washout problem. It is very similar to the very old not active LCD displays from years ago. Appartenly Toshiba is using this terrible display on most of their laptops. This model is not cheap yet the display is terrible. Check it out at a store before you buy. I am a long corporate Toshiba customer and am now looking to other manufactures. ...

Summary: Great price, decent features
Review: This notebook looks great on paper: 2.0 GHz P4 CPU, 15' display, and a very low price. It sounds almost too good to be true. Well it is true, but naturally Toshiba had to cut cost somewhere to sell it at this price, and it is important to know where:

CPU ' a desktop 2.0 GHz P4 not a lower power mobile P4-M. The P4-M will give you longer battery life and will run cooler at the same frequency, however the P4-M cost more and we are clearly looking at a 'budget' model here.

Display ' 15' LCD 1024-by-768 pixels. Not unusual but better notebooks will have 1280x1024 or higher displays. The response time, contrast and luminance on this model is okay but not great. More expensive models tend to have much better displays. If the quality of the display is more important than the size, then get a notebook with a good quality 14' display instead.

Graphics - ATI M6-P (aka Mobile Radeon) chipset with 16MB of video Ram. This chipset won't satisfy 3D gamers but it will work fine for most people. It's not my first choice and it is slowly giving way to the superior Radeon 7500c in notebooks in this price range (see the HP xt125).

Amazon.com has some of the specs wrong (or missing) that I thought I would clear up:

RAM - DDR-SDRAM not SDRAM. This is important since the 266MHz DDR-SDRAM is twice as fast as 133MHz SDRAM. Only the oldest and cheapest notebooks still use the slower SDRAM.

On die L2 Cache - 512K not 256K. This equals a 10-15% performance boost over the 256K-cache model. (If you a curious 'cache' is a small but very fast block of memory that sits on the CPU. This is the first place the CPU looks for data it needs. If it isn't there it will get it from the RAM. The less often it has to go to the larger but slower RAM the better.)

One other note that may interest you - PCWorld magazine has this to say about this model: 'The Toshiba Satellite 1905-S301 lasted 4 hours, 11 minutes on one battery charge, shattering all previous records for Pentium 4 notebooks in our tests.' This may not hold true for everyone, but it is a good sign. However don't try watching a DVD and expect it to last this long. The DVD motor, CPU usage and the constant LCD refresh will cut this time in half. However under a normal software load you should do quite well.

Soin this model you are getting a very well featured laptop with a large display of average quality. Yes, if you spend more you can do better, but at this price it would be hard to beat this model.

Summary: terrible tech support
Review: Toshiba may make good products, but their support is the worst i have ever come across. They have lost my laptop for over a month now and do not care a lick about it. They're tech support team is in Turkey and they dont care a thing about anybody. They kept hanging up on me and refused to help me saying it will take some time. When i called back- no one knew anything and had zero updates. DO NOT BUY TOSHIBA PRODUCTS! Get a Gateway or Dell instead...two companies that actually care about their customers.
