Summary: 3 years with my Tecra 9000...and still going...
Review: It is small, lightweight and has WiFi: 802.11b. When I got it, it had Win2000 Pro and 256M of RAM. I subsequently upgraded it to XP Pro and 1024M of RAM. Helped somewhat.
It worked great for the first 2 years. Beat all the other notebooks that I've tried. The hard drive decided to die @ 2 years. I sent it in...AFTER I bought a replacement. 8 weeks later it came back. Hard disc was fixed, the CD/DVD drive was broken as well as a few other things. I Returned it. Got it back 4 weeks later. It's been working well ever since.
The good news was that they DID get it fixed and for FREE. Bad news is that talking to the Customer Service Reps (CSRs) will give almost anyone a migraine headache in minutes. I'm reasonably sure that a couple of the CSRs put me on hold then went for dinner or breakfast in hopes that I would go away. (Ah, but I have a headset, a cordless phone and another laptop!) They don't know much, they care even less and they don't do what they say they will.
Back to the computer: aside from generally working well, it IS showing its age by being slow on the front side buss--the actual processor. The batteries (at about $100+/- each) are good for about 1/2-1 hour on each charge and about 6 months. That is a SERIOUS downer, in my opinion.
The WiFi works well. The antenna is in the top--with the screen. It tends to be directional. If you aren't oriented properly to the wireless router, you can only get about 10' away. If you ARE properly oriented, you can get about 200' and still have useful signa. You cannot use it around a 2.4 GHZ cordless phone. Phone will interfere and the WiFi signal will be lost--every time. Can't us a 5.8 gHz cordless phone either. It has to be 900mHz if you're going to use one.
The bottom also gets HOT. After a number of low temp and medium temp leg burns, I got an old fashioned TV lap tray at a garage sale. I put the computer on that. Works great!

Summary: Great features, poor reliability.
Review: I love this laptop when it works. It has all the latest and greatest features. Integrated WiFi is my personal favorite feature. The reason for only 2 stars is that I'm on my 3rd system board in less than a year. But that's not the worst part. The worst part is that each time it took WEEKS to get a replacement system board (it seems that lots of people were needing replacement system boards). So I was out of business for weeks at a time while waiting on a replacement system board, which is totally unacceptable for me. Dell, on the other hand, gets you replacement parts the next day. As much as I love the features of this notebook, it will be my last Toshiba.

Summary: The worst notebook I have ever used.
Review: It was a nightmare dealing with Toshiba. Over the first year, Toshiba replaced the i/o board twice, hard drive twice, and memory module once. On my last repair, I had to spend a week on the phone before Toshiba sent me a repair box. Toshiba didn't fix the problem the first time, not the second time either. I didn't want to waste another week on the phone and another week or two before getting the notebook back (so much for Depot Express service) which might not even be functional. So I gave up and bought a new laptop from another brand.

You don't have to hold my words for it. Check out Toshiba company report at http://www.bbbsouthland.org/index.cfm

If you enter 'Toshiba America Information Systems' to see the BBB company report. You will see the following quote

"We rate this company as having an unsatisfactory business performance record based on a pattern of unresolved and unanswered customer complaints.

Complainants allege defective merchandise and failure to honor warranty claims. Many customers who purchased Toshiba Laptop computers claim the units have an overheating problem due to malfunction of the cooling fan. Other complainants allege delays when computers are sent to the service department for repairs. Some report their computer has been returned two or three times for the same problem, or, that repairs performed did not remedy the problem.

The company responds to some complaints by offering additional repairs, or explanations of warranty provisions. Some complaints are unresolved, meaning customers are not satisfied with the company's response. Many other complaints remain unanswered.

The Better Business Bureau does not endorse, recommend or disapprove of any company, product or service."

Think twice before buying a Toshiba brand.

Review: The machine works well. Fast, quite processor. Keyboard has a good feel. Slim docking bay is a key item. Sound qaulity is excellent and screen is bright. My main complaint is with the customer service which is not very familiar with their products.

Summary: Absolutely worthless...
Review: We bought this computer because the IBM we wanted at another site was out of stock. What a terrible mistake! We have only had problems with it and we'll have to buy another computer because this one is always in the shop. It started giving us error messages from the moment we took it home (that first night). We called Toshiba and Customer Service and they're unhelpful and unprepared. After haggling for QUITE some time we got them to give us a refurbished replacement. Dealing with this replacement was almost a full time job. Still, with a new computer, we've had the HD already changed 3 times. The modem has broken twice. Every couple of months I have to re-install all my software because the HD does not partition well and the machine becomes unstable very easily. In our 5 years of owning an IBM laptop... did we ever have to do any of these things! And of course, Toshiba could care less they've sold us a terrible product! We're already shopping for a replacement and we're just going to cut our losses and stop wasting time at the computer repair shop and chug this baby. Mind you, we don't make our computer split atoms, all we do is email, pay our e-bills and write a letter once in a while. Would hate to see the mess if I made it do some large Excel program, etc. For [money] there are a lot of options out there. Spare yourself the misery we have endured.
