Product Info Reviews

Description:

Developed to appeal to those who value extreme portability over incredible speed, Toshiba's new Portégé R100 Notebook PC tips the scales at an astonishingly lightweight 2.3 pounds and measures just 11.3 by 9 by .7 inches. Though it doesn't pack enough punch for true power users, the Portégé R100 is perfect for situations where a typical notebook is simply too big or bulky.

Driving the Portégé R100 is a 900 MHz Intel Pentium M processor, 256 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory, and a Trident XP4m32 LP graphics chipset with 32 MB video memory. Though Toshiba asserts the unit will outperform comparably configured systems with a higher clock speed by integrating processor, system chipset, and wireless LAN into a complete mobile solution, serious gamers and anyone into high-end processor-intensive applications should look elsewhere. Nevertheless, typical notebook users should find the unit quite satisfactory for the majority of standard mobile tasks.

The Portégé R100 offers several alternatives for data storage and transfer. Inside the main case you'll find an adequate 30 GB hard drive. This, in fact, is the only distinction between this and Toshiba's other Portégé R100, also available at eBay. Residing externally to the main case and connected via a PC card slot is a DVD-ROM drive for playing CDs and DVDs, installing programs, and the like. It is important to note that CD and DVD writing is not supported in this stock configuration. Furthermore, the system's size will increase accordingly whenever this drive is attached.

Surprisingly, the Portégé R100's display screen is only slightly smaller and no less capable than that of a standard notebook, at 12 inches and 1024x768 resolution. Other key amenities include an 84-key keyboard with 12 function keys and HotKey function and dual high-speed USB 2.0 ports for external peripherals. Connectivity options are ample, including an RJ-45 LAN port, an RJ-11 modem port, state-of-the-art Wi-Fi compliant wireless LAN, and Bluetooth support. Battery life is estimated at 2 hours with its primary cell and a startling 6.8 hours with a high capacity battery.
